I was an AFS Summer Returnee from Portugal in 1986. I was from a single parent low income family. If not for a need based financial award, I would not have been able to go. In fact, if AFS had advertised program fees before we were accepted I never would have been able to apply. We were raised to look at price first, always. Program fees did though have an influence on whether I would apply for the year vs summer program and for how far away from Wisconsin, US...I would apply to go. (They asked us to which country did we want to go and mine were entirely based on geographic location from US. I was the very first person in my family to go anywhere outside of the US. From my summer AFS experience, I soon had a college goal upon my return. Learn Portuguese so I could have a conversation with host parents..who did not speak English. Growing up, I never felt accepted by my peers or family. As part of AFS's state programs, meeting all the people going abroad that year...I found my tribe. Going to a family with whom I could not even communicate yet I felt so welcome and a sense of proudness on behalf of my host father. Over the 37 years that have passed, I lost contact with all those from US who went to Portugal in that summer. I also lost contact with all the Wisconsin, Milwaukee area students who were going abroad via AFS for either the summer 1986 or academic year 1986 - 1987. We had no fb or any other programs. There was no internet, no cell phone...telephones were still attached to the walls then. Paper letters and paper address books were the only way to keep contact and hope that everyone you knew kept you up to date with their new address. I wished that AFS would have been able to provide us with a list of people who went abroad or came to the state ..due to privacy reasons...they could not. Trying to find anyone from these groups of people 37 years later...so very difficult. Regarding the film..I would like to see a video from those my age both international to US or those my age from US to other countries. I am sure everyone remembers the questions we were asked or the things that happened that were different from our own countries. Since we have the benefit of time, we could reflect how AFS could have influenced our lives and/or what our life trajectory took. Youth might be the future but we in our 50's were youth once and how those experiences influenced us.

You will end up learning two languages here... Spanish and Guarani. Guarani its important because most of the curse words we use are in that language. Have a nice day mate and welcome to the hot heart of south america.
