As an Italian, I will never understand the animosity against Russia to its fullest… no matter how much I love polish history, it’s always astonishing to see the wounds of such a troubled past. Western Europe should really trust the poles’ experience: we should, as we should have done years ago

There is no Macedonian language. It is beautiful Macedonian Bulgarian dialect. (I am not Bulgarian)
@anailievskazavrsnik Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment. Slight correction, there is no such thing as Macedonian Bulgarian dialect. Macedonian language is a language and it is the official language of the Republic of North Macedonia. It is a South Slavic language taught in many universities around the world, and believe it or not books from Bulgarian are translated into Macedonian and vice versa. So, your label Macedonian Bulgarian dialect doesn't check the linguistic box, or any to be honest.
@robertab929 Жыл бұрын
@@anailievskazavrsnik Some Slavic languages are established even if there is no reason for it. Belarusian + Ukrainian are closely related or even they can be as dialectal groups of Ruthenian. The same about Czech and Slovak. They might be single language. In fact, the difference between Czech/Moravian dialects and Slovak dialects is bigger than difference between standards of Czech and Slovak languages. Another pair is Bulgarian+Macedonian. In fact, is single language. The problem is that Bulgarian standard is taken based on Eastern dialect which is less similar to Macedonian dialect than Sofia dialect. Bulgarian/Macedonian language should be established on Sofia dialect. And we have Serbo-Croatian language consisting 4 almost identical standards (Croatian, Bosnian, Serbian, Montenegrin). Much bigger differences exist between Serbo-Croatian dialects (Chakavian, Kajkavian, Shtokavian) than between 4 standards.
@robertab929 Жыл бұрын
@@anailievskazavrsnik It is in fact that Macedonian and Bulgarian almost universally all accepted that it is the same language. Separation of them is only based on politics. The story about a Macedonian president on an official visit to Bulgaria circulates, apparently carrying a simultaneous translator who made a fool of himself by repeating almost exactly what he was told.
@AnaZavrsnik Жыл бұрын
@@robertab929 I am not sure that I understand this universality. The story goes that they don’t understand each other, full stop. The interpreter do not simple saying the same thing. I saw the previous comment about languages vs dialects - that it’s political construct. Even though there are many dialects in the area it will be politically decided which one will be the language… Saying that Bulgarian is Macedonian is not correct not just on linguistic level, but also on a human one. I will not even start on other mentioned languages. Some linguists spent years on these questions and they have much stronger arguments not simply stating their opinions that 2 languages should be one. In this century where people fight for diversity and inclusion someone’s wishes for combining languages is not very appreciated.
@robertab929 Жыл бұрын
@@AnaZavrsnik South Slavic languages form dialectal continuum and plenty of dialects. And placing the place of division is in many cases purely arbitral. Torlakian dialect of Serbo-Croatian is transient zone between Serbo-Croatian and Macedonian/Bulgarian. To me, Macedonian is exactly like mentioned dialect, but on Macedonian/Bulgarian side. I agree. New "languages" in Europe are created because of politics, not because of real diversity. On contrary, Chinese govt prefers to talk about one big Chinese language, but in fact in China there are at least 100 (or even hundreds) of Sinitic languages with even more dialects. And Beijing Mandarin is just one of those languages.

Great presentation. I wish the media would stop using the term: "Russia-backed separatists" and use "Russia-controlled separatists" or "Russia-led militia" instead, when referring to war in Donbas before the full-scale invasion. Even more accurate would be to say: "a mix of Russian-controlled separatists and Russian armed forces".

I am a big fan of Geoffrey Hoskings and have read many of his books. However, this presentation was weak. Yes, Russia has legitimate interests in its Near Abroad, and it could have resolved them by peaceful means. However, it did the opposite. Hoskings should have spent more time looking at Russia's internatl sociological and political realities instead of focusing on Western actions. Unforunately, this talk misses the point and as a result does not come to full grips with the issues. The West did not create Vladimir Putin and his Great Power resentments. Those came out of Russia and its own internal problems.

W.r.t the szlachta, it is a common misconception that it comes from the German "schalchten" (to butcher). Rather, it comes from the German term for noble family, e.g., "Adelsgeschlecht".

WORST LECTURER AND PERSON EVER!!! I attended modules taught by Alena and found her as a person alongside her teaching appaling. Firstly, Alena is a total control-obssessed person that feels the urge to dominate students. For instance, students who were late for her tutorials or lectures were publicly humiliated by being asked to sing, to sit in a corner, to jump around, to sit on tables. Secondly, Alena's assessment is immoral as she make lists with each student's topic, hence she knows when marking assignments who wrote what. This is highly immoral and breaks many academic ethical principles. Thirdly, Alena is incredibly condescending towards students and highly arrogant as a person. I honestly believe that she genuinely takes great pleasure in dominating and publicly humiliating students. Probably she does this to ensure that she dominates students and that no one challenges her in any way. This creates a top-down fear-based environment where learning is hindered and she full manifests her total autocracy. I have studied at several UK universities before UCL and I couldn't believe that such a person is allowed to operate at such a prestigious UK insitution such as UCL. Alena doesn't understand basic student-teacher dynamics such as the fact THAT WE PAY HER SALARY. Alena should remember that she is not living in communist Russia where autocracy and fear dictate everything and that in capitalistic England, who has the money dictates the terms. Therefore, since we (students) pay her salary, she should be incredibly humble and recognise that if it wasn't for us she wouldn't have a job. I honestly believe that she is, without a shadow of doubt, the worst lecturer I had in my academic and that UCL should FIRE her as soon as possible to preserve any academic ethics and respect for students.
