I feel like too much emphasis is put on it - a lot of people don't know a lot about their family because of family break downs and estrangements, children born out of wed lock so later generations don't know exactly who their grandfather was, the loss of family related possessions over the years, inaccuracies in recording of family in historical records, the need to 'prove' that you have the right to follow a certain tradition or path, and worst of all, the dreaded concept of 'racial' purity. For these reasons, I don't pay attention to it much because there are enough difficulties in life without borrowing stuff from things you can't prove or change. Just live life.

I really enjoyed this different sort of chat Philip, thank you 😊 I do like to look at things in slightly less conventional ways, I feel it helps us to get wider understanding and is less likely to end up with us being stuck with a load of confirmation bias to wade through to get anywhere. Although I must say the suggested focus on the "children" as the future in a literal sense as it is often meant, as someone without children this can feel a little isolating sometimes. Many blessings /|\

I hear you! I'm probably not going to have biological children. This is why for me it's so important to expand the concept of ancestor to include other forms, BUT also expand the concept of descendant too. My descendants will be my students and the others who follow me in lineage. The responsibility biological parents feel towards their biological children is not exclusive to that biological relationship only, I have a strong feeling of responsibility to my communities and those in my life who I have a mentor relationship to.

My father was a policeman. His mother was American Black, but his father came from Ireland. He seemed to me a bit fey; an uncanny sense for when there was danger or someone was lying. He's say it was his WWII service and living on the streets and just being a policeman in Brooklyn. Saw the dangerous ones, even when they were well dressed and smiling and not making eye contact. Said one day, having a discussion my mother provoked, asking him if he really didn't believe in God? He kept calmly saying "No." Then she adamantly asked where he thought he would go when he died. He paused for a bit then then loudly said, "I think we go into a hole in the ground and then we are DEAD DEAD DEAD!" and my mother was thoughtful amd silent for quite a long time (for her) and said, "Well Edgar, I guess you are a much better person than I thought you were."

😔 My father, in his last 2 years when he was dying, did a lot of work on himself, silently examined his mistakes and still beamed more love at the end. I was with him in the last 2 hours as he laid in bed, forcing down each breath and asked my permission to stop the fight. He was tired. "Would you think badly of me if I just stopped the fight?" I told him it was ok. He thanked me and laid back and sang this song in a lovely deep voice: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fJKriodunJ6Hmbcsi=0aUL2-CktdYBGCWd. He felt that he had faded so fast. But he comes to me from time to time, simply asking at the RIGHT moment, "Do you really want to do that?"

My paternal Grandmother died in the local Mental asylum in 1924 , ‘ Madness in the family’ ? She’d had 14 children. Not spoken about in the family, I saw the family Aunts, uncles ,cousins living with this knowledge and shame / grief . I discovered the information in my 40s I was compelled by her to recover her . Poor diet , a background of strikes ‘ Coal mines ‘ war , poor education and family planning,it was ‘Post Natal depression’ , understood now 100years later . I gave information to the wider family changing their lives I’m sure a relief that we aren’t all carrying the ‘nutcase gene ‘ . Setting her free and her ancestors. We live in thanks of her …we go on into the future. 🙏🏽

My grandmorher had 14 kids too. Takes a lot out of one. Used to be uiseful to work the farm, but they have to be fed too and lots of chores! Teaches people to be helpful and observant in an omnipresent way. Be thankful. My mother was diagnosed with dementia at the hospital at end as she shouted out things that needed to be done (rent to be collectred, plants to be watered) that the doctor evaluting her could REFUSED understand,m even whn I explained. She would not change her diagnosis. My mother went in after a fall, treated for a head concusssion but would scream in pain, especially when moved about, until one anasthesialogist came in, saw what she was grabbing and had her taken off for proper x-rays (after 5 days) to find that her knee had been shattered.

I think we don't have to choose between ancestors & children as we can give love to both while our main focus can be on the present..ancestors that choose to connect can have information & guidance that can help our understanding & so help us taking positive steps in the world as they have a different perspective and they care about the future too

I find ancestor work important because they affect our present world in ways we're not always aware of until we start doing the work. Doing the work helps us live out our present better and that sorely needed healing is passed on by us in the future. Otherwise, we risk perpetuating and passing on the same harmful patterns; if we do the work, we have a chance of a better future. If we do the work this generation, then our descendants will need to do less of it.

In retrospect, I don't think you were being too too provocative, just casually stirring the pot ;) Thankyou for inviting me for this chat, I hope people enjoy.

To me, the people that rule is are evil. The regular people are the angels. Money and power are the dark magic. Thats the struggle we all now face in the world.

I've been feeling this for a while now, and last night it was driven home that no matter where they are, they are getting on with the new and it would be an intrusion to bother them with anchors here.

I raise goats in the north of Alberta. I have a compound for my small animal's. I put them in at the night. I have animals from the wild all around. But I have times it's yours and times it's mine. If we keep the domestic animals we must protect them . If we plan to protect their are ways to prepare. We all kill mice . And if we have to or we can't keep a home . Practically speaking preparation and planning is essential. It is irresponsible to the animals you bring if your to lazy or ignorant to protect them. It disrupts nature to feed domestic animals to wildlife . Lovely video on all other aspects other than the animal husbandry.

The wheel of the year and harvest/manurity is perfect for me as my birthday is in August so I was likely conceived around winter solstice/xmas. Ever since I was a kid I veiwed the year as a wheel or clock as its layout in my mind goes clockwise through the months. I want to wish everyone reading this a wonderful festival, a smooth transition, and seamless connection to their ancestors, something we lose track of as a society sometimes.

I was born in Whanganui. The day our Awa (river) received legal person hood I cried with joy. Currently the conservative right coalition government here in New Zealand is moving towards undoing environmental protection laws and undermining the rights of Maori (indigenous people.) Search "New Zealand fast track bill" and "Treaty Principles referendum". Nature is under attack here now.
