Adults tend to fear consequences, no wonder they're less creative.

Simply, we create because we were created. John 1:1-3 KJV - In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

Society has completely lost this concept, especially in the working world where people are being paid less for more output.

This is a GEM. I am a screenwriter with diagnosed ADHD and use this to get out of a day filled with toxic criticism and enter my writing flow state. Whether that's overwhelming research or writing serenely for deadlines and output. Challenge is to get into that play-like mood (mindset) without seeming like I'm procrastinating. Also looking professional about it 😂

Perhaps this is a statement about the effects of modern media consumption on children, but I've actually found that most children I know prefer to simply reenact and replicate in their play and art rather than perform any real lateral thinking themselves, and will often vehemently resist any "new" ideas. Maybe children just appear more creative to adults because they tend to live such a different kind of life. As they are still in the process of becoming acquainted with reality, they are prone to misconceptions which, by contradicting the reality adults know, will seem like novel ideas. Also, we do tend to dump every creative or colorful thing we can get our hands on at childrens' feet, and by simply repeating such things back or carelessly mixing their favorites, they can present something that looks very creative while in fact being merely imitative of the "resources" they've been given.

Well put. I agree that a lot of child 'play' is atempts at imitation, which still requires refinement. Education provides the broader experience and tools for the child to increasingly better immitate and then innovate. Alas, a lot of the comments in this section seem to erroneously think that the school system is designed to limit, not encourage creativity.

The most creative I've ever felt was when I was in a band with good friends in high school and my early 20s. We inspired each other. We had a similar sense of humor and whimsy. I'm not saying we were The Beatles, but when you watch the Beatles documentary you can see a similar quality. Now, almost 20 years later, I still make music and I also write stories and novels. But it's harder to get in that space when I'm alone. Having someone to "play" with is important, I think.

Funny how creative problem solving is so similar across the board. I was taught “saturate, incubate, illuminate” by a retired US Army Delta Force Colonel (Pete Blaber). When that unit was fire stood up, their CO and his second in command were searching high and low for ways to improve their problem solving abilities and one place the search took them was Kelloggs. They learned counter-terrorism in part from learning how Kelloggs managed global logistics and data flow to isolate problems and make good decisions way back in 1977/78. It’s interesting to see how creativity manifests in vastly different endeavors. Comedy…Special Operations assessment and selection… it’s all a process.

Same with anything. For example, anyone who plays sports can attest that when they "try to hard" they're never as good as when they're playing and having fun. We all possess infinite creativity within us; the key to tapping into it is to "let go" and let it flow.

Start to kick ideas around and use inspiration and experience and the brain alchemises it, maybe not right there but it percolates and produces that lightbulb moment perhaps now, perhaps later. In writing this is so, an idea can zap into your mind a day or so later from that kick around session.

Another reason young children are ao creative is becUse they havent yet developed a fear of being criticized or a fear of failure. Many people are very creative, but they stifle their own ideas because they are afraid of making mistakes.

I find that i first have to be in a meditative state (as in, prior to waking up fully) then take the ideas, like building blocks, to mix and match in perhaps impossible combinations. Anything that impresses you or is memorable can be worked on, given quality control, later. And be prepared to trash ideas that don't work out, you can always do another session.

History shows that the most innovative musicians generally didn't have formal music education, and many of the most innovative artists the same. I wish I had the time, energy, and money back that I spent attending State University Art school for the most part.

When there is something wrong with our educational system, it is that bullying happens there and most of it goes undetected or unchanged. Bullying scars a child for life! That's what is the most detrimental thing to happy play: to be at your constant wit for mean people coming to embarrass and hurt you. And to find out, that all others are not equally upset with the bullies and make them pay a heavy price for it. But instead lick their proverbial a*ses. Bullying needs to be criminalized. It's that bad. It's truly torture of an innocent soul. Any teacher or parent endorsing bullying should be held accountable by law. They endorse torture!
