I'm just about old enough to remember the 6 day war. I was 8 [almost 9] years old at the time, and had, by coincidence just learned about the land at school in religious [Christian] context, we were taught about Jesus as being from the land of Judaea [as it was called in New Testament times] and also that Judaea was the same area as that known as Israel and Palestine. I was also into stamp collecting at the time, so knew where the [modern] countries were from maps.

As a linguist, Easter is not of "uncertain origin" - It derives from Ēostra (the West Germanic goddess of dawn, *not* fertility, and likely not Spring either); however, she has lent only her name to the holiday in exactly the same way that other Germanic deities have lent their names to our weekdays in English (but no one seems to moan and groan about that). Nothing more “pagan” than that. The etymology of her name comes from the Indo-European root word *hewsôs, meaning “to shine, glow red” - a reference to dawn. In Proto-Germanic, the name has been reconstructed as *Austrô(n). To the early Germans, she was Ostara, from which modern German gets “Ostern” for Easter. Ēostra’s name has also given us the name of the cardinal direction “East”, many place names in England, and even a few female first names (none of which I believe are used anymore). Some will claim that because Ēostra’s name only appears in one written source; a text from the works of the Venerable Bede, that he invented her, and this Germanic deity never existed. Without getting into what would be a long explanation, suffice to say the place and personal names based on her name in the areas she was worshiped, completely contradict this claim. In the 1600’s, to someone living in England, the word 'Easter' had three meanings/references: the pre-Christian reference and all associated with it, the resurrection of Jesus, and the Jewish Passover - it’s the latter that’s the root of the issue. The word “Passover” didn’t enter English until the 1500’s, so in the early 1600’s, it was still a relatively new word. One of the Bibles used for the KJV was Tyndale’s. In it, Tyndale used “Easter” in every instance Greek had “pascha”. The compilers of the KJV used the ‘new’ word Passover in place of Easter, but in one instance, missed one, as it were, which created a bit of inconsistency (and subsequent speculation as to why it is there). The secular traditions and customs of Easter are deeply rooted in the past, but that past is firmly planted in an early Medieval Christian Europe, not an ancient pagan one

And He said ‘ Fire your tracer bullets into the standing wheat.’ Perplexed, they did it anyway!
