Are people still moving to the bay area?!… Or is this a video that meant to be put out pre-pandemic?

In 2015 we moved from the Santa Clara County area to the Annapolis, MD area. Do not talk to me about weather, haha. What is the weather THIS HOUR, should I wear a jacket, a tee shirt, flip flops, boots. Should I have an umbrella? Sunscreen? It changes all.the.time. The Bay area a bit chilly and rainy?? Not compared to 90% of the rest of the nation. Don't even get me started on humidity from May to September. along with pollen, lots, and lots of pollen. Live in the Bay Area, pay the money, deal with the traffic (it's way better than LA, trust me), it will be worth it. signed, retired former Bay Area tech worker.

A vote here for “boring white” paint. Home Depot Behr Ultra Pure White off the shelf is fresh, crisp, and clean. Beiges can look frumpy and gray is becoming overdone/ passé (my opinion only, having lived with all the above). All tips here are truly necessary! Declutter and clean should be # 1 and 2, IMO.

I’m painting the interior of our home, including the ceilings, closets, and all woodwork (including the doors). In other words, if it’s not moving, it’s getting painted.😅 After 11 years of living here, I finally swapped out all of the door knobs so that they all match. Why didn’t I do this 11 years ago???

I did that many years ago while watching all the HGTV show about selling your house. All neutral walls and white trim. I figured I may as well enjoy the clean, updated look while I lived here. Now that we’re seriously thinking of selling I need to do some tweaking and refreshing! It just never ends.

I upgraded a house that real estate agents said was worth only 180k in 2016. I then put no more than 18k for new flooring in the laundry room, granite counters in the kitchen, and three bathrooms. My husband painted the exterior and interior with help. Replaced windows in the front and trimed all the outdoor windows and painted the trim white. Added new interior/exterior lighting in most of the house. Pulled out an obtrusive tree in the front yard next to the house. Put up a 40 ft side neighbor fence (the rest of the fencing in the back was fine) and landscaped. Purchased a new stainless steal fridge, dish washer, oven, and microwave. I was able to sell the house for 306k. Only one realestate agent said she could get that. I ended up giving her the listing to complete the paperwork. Saved 1.5 % commission. I had to move 2.5 hours away and couldnt complete the listing. Oh, also staged with Rent a Center furniture because the dining area was small and had a weird shape. I also put fancy, large, washer and dryers (from rent a center) in the laundry room. This helped the prospect visualize what could be. I found a handyman to put in the lighting and a plumber to put in the faucets. A couple of young guys contracted for Lowes installing my windows, agreed to work on the side at a discount painting and doing the woodwork or extra handyman type jobs.

You should have done a lot of that long ago so YOU CAN ENJOY IT! When my mom passes, we’re not doing anything to her house because if we do anything, they’re gonna tear it out and do their own style. It would just be a total waste of money and more crap to go into the landfill. It’s got good bones great location, all brick Built better than 99% of the house nowadays it just needs to be updated. But it’s been very very well taken care of. Now, if we were going to keep it sure we would update it to our style, but we’re not.

Problem is, a lot of people have no imagination and can’t see past the current finishes. Some people may put their own stamp, but most buyers won’t change much after they buy it. You’re basically limiting your market to those who are looking to improve the place, but they want to buy it at a deep discount to pay for it. It’s cheaper to buy some hardware and paint and broaden your market!

We just moved to San Jose Berryessa area. I wouldn't call this Silicon Valley. Maybe Silicon Valley Adjacent. Silicon Valley tech companies are mostly in the suburban cities of San Mateo down to Palo Alto, Sunnyvale, Cupertino, Santo Clara. San Jose is more industrial, big airport, city with normal city problems. Strange to have ugly neighborhoods right next to expensive ones. There is no charm to crazy roads! It is like a mini-Los Angeles with criss-crossing freeways and expressways. TOO many homeless allowed to live in campers, vans, they just park on the street, even in nice neighborhoods. Near freeways there are tent people surrounded by trash. .Crazy ones too, wandering the streets, pushing carts, talking to themselves. Lots of tech people are unemployed this year, definitely check Indeed for jobs and salaries first. Not everyone is an engineer buying $million houses as you will soon find out. Yes there are lots of ethnic food stores, even whole ethnic malls. Like a foreign country. We like our nice one bedroom apartment, $2700 + utils + hummingbirds. We save money cooking at home because we can't afford the restaurants. Santa Cruz beach is near and nice.

These upgrades are not necessarily cheap. Cheap light fixtures, no. Painting the exterior? Ours cost >$15k last time. Interior, $10k.

I didn't do most of these things, but what I thought made the best impact was the $1k that I spent on a professional landscaper. I had lived in the house for almost 40 years and loved planting new things regularly. But when I asked a landscaper, he recommended removing almost everything but the nicest flowering bushes - then mulched everything. I wished I had done it years ago. It looked so clean and neat - and would have been so much easier to keep tidy!

When we sold our house a few years ago, we did ALL of these things to be able to sell. The popular colors and finishes may not be the same as those in this video 10 years from now, but the rest of the advice is excellent. First time on the market, our house didn’t sell. So paint, hardware, faucets, lighting. Our goal was to get rid of all of the shiny yellow brass and erase the 90’s look of the house. After all these changes (while still in a buyer-driven market), the house sold in 2 weeks. This lady knows what she’s talking about, so take her advice.

We are looking for a smaller house to retire to closer to family. I agree with you. When I see some of these 'cheap' diys I run. I have discovered in the past, they are just cosmetically covering up deeper problems that will lift its pricey head a few years down the road.

We upgraded using a color palette from a placemat. Dark and light Blues, Aqua green, Nutmeg tan/brown and white. Always paint the ceiling to match the walls. White ceilings look cheap and make the buyer think "Where else did the seller cut corners?"
@lanialost1320

I agree about ceilings not being white -- looks like you taped a sheet to it. BUT ... popcorn ceilings look much better in a white color. Only smooth plaster ceilings look stylish when painted a non-white color that's chosen with care. Non-white ceilings are more common in English and European homes than in USA.

I agree the go to white ceilings ! Why? The same colour especially if a lighter shade, or A paler shade of the same wall colour or a light blue like the sky. Also I use a gloss paint on the ceilings so the lights glow.
