''The marriage of Quasimodo.'' As mentioned, at the very day of the deaths of La Esmeralda and the archdeacon, nobody saw, or heard of Quasimodo, nobody knew what had become of him, disappearing without a trace, as if the ground just swallowed him to hell after he culled Frollo's soul, as the hearsay said. Ever since, the citizens of Paris could not help but cast a look of pity as they crossed by the towers of Notre Dame, which were now desolate. The bells never rang with the mighty carillon that once animated them, for they lost the passionate swing that once made them sing merry songs, and they were lamenting it. All he had ever loved was taken from him, and he resolved to do one thing. “Goodbye, my friends.” He whispered with a voice that trembled with sadness, glancing at each bell that he learned to care for like a sister, and granted each of them a kiss, seeing their beautiful, glittering copper haunches reflecting his hideous face. He grumbled, and fled, only looking at his feet, his heart sank as he made each step, trying to escape from the pavement of the city where he grew, seeking solace in the quiet outskirts. His hunched back was a burden to carry, but not as heavy as the misery that now dwelled in his poor heart. His body was aching, and hunger tormented him, but he continued, not wavering for a second. He reached the lonely faubourg of Paris, and gazed upon the gibbet of Montfauçon - a giant structure of stone covered with sheets of moss, where many corpses hung, but amongst those grotesques cadavres, hung one radiant woman, like gold that shone amidst ores of coal. He climbed there, and disengaged her from the rope, holding her on his back like a scarf, just as he did that day he first met her, but this time, she could not resist, different emotions accompanied the both of them. As he descended the last step, he carried her like rare treasure, and collapsed to the ground, a pang of sorrow seized his ill heart. The tints of life that once graced her cheeks have faded, but her delicate beauty still remained on her even in death. She was lying on the ground like an angel cast from the heavens, and the garish sunlight surrounded her like a wedding veil. She looked so serene, as if finally in her eternal sleep, she found peace, and she would never have to open her beautiful eyes to behold misery. He clutched her very tightly, and as he felt her cold cheek on his calloused hand, a tear slipped from his eye and fell on her tattered chemise. He opened his only eye, blurred with tears, and was met by the sight of vultures biting on the bloodied flesh that remained on the bones of the hideous skeletons. They were the loving guests to see his merry union, and he saw more warmth and acceptance in their hollow, empty eye sockets and in the black eyes of the birds than in the eyes of the people of Paris that always looked at him with derision and hatred. That structure of decrepit stone and death was the only altar he deserved, and she was his bride. Suddenly, a mighty peal bounded from the belfry of Notre Dame, and sounded across all the city. Quasimodo’s wish had come true - those bells that he once shook for the prosperity of the people, finally now rang for his happiness, his ascension from the woes of earth, and he was determined to spend his final days with the lovely woman in his arms, and to find joy with her in the heavens, if maybe God could be kinder, and allow him to enter his graceful kingdom, where there was no suffering.

Beautiful Is the Devil incarnated in her To turn my eyes away from Eternal God? Who put this carnal desire in my being To prevent me from looking to Heaven? She carries in her original sin Does wanting her make me a criminal? She who we took for a prostitute, a nobody Suddenly seems to carry the cross of the human race O, Our Lady! Oh, let me just one time Open the door to Esmeralda's garden

Moon lyrics Gringoire: Moon, you who shine your light. Bright on the Paris night. See, how a man suffers all for love. Clear, solitary star. So far, when the day returns. Please hear. Up there so high the cry of the world. Please hear the cry, of a man in pain. For whom all those million stars. Don't shine like those shining eyes. He loves with a mortal love. Moon Moon, please don't disappear. Before you have time to hear. Just hear. How cries the heart of the human beast. Please hear the cry, Quasimodo cries. He cries for his heart is full. His voice over mountains flies. So high, that I know it flies to you. Moon. See, how this man aspires. To join, his poor voice with angels. Moon, you who shine your light. For, poets as they write. See, how a man suffers all. For love. For love.

This is truly the most beautiful thing I have ever had the pleasure of seeing and hearing. I had thought such love impossible, and even if it is only fictional, it strikes the heart with tremendous force. Quasimodo's ever persistent love, despite being unrequited is truly awesome. Men have lived and died for love for ages but this is absolutely the saddest and most beautiful story of such I have ever known. I am not ashamed to say that I am moved to tears.

Belle (Is the Only Word) [Belle] [Quasimodo:] Belle, is the only word I know that suits her well. When she dances oh the stories she can tell. A free bird trying out her wings to fly away. And when I see her move I see hell to pay. She dances naked in my soul and sleep won't come. And it's no use to pray these prayers to Notre dame. Tell, who'd be the first to raise his hand and throw a stone. I'd hang him high and laugh to see him die alone. Oh Lucifer please let me go beyond god's law. And run my fingers through her hair, Esmeralda. [Frollo:] Belle, there's a demon inside her who came from hell. And he turned my eyes from god and oh, I fell. He put this heat inside me I'm ashamed to tell. Without my god inside I'm just a burning shell. The sin of eve she has in her I know so well. For want of her I know I'd give my soul to sell. Belle, this gypsy girl is there a soul beneath her skin. And does she bear the cross of all our human sin. Oh Notre dame please let me go beyond gods law. Open the door of love inside, Esmeralda. [Phoebus:] Belle, even though her eyes seem to lead us to hell. She may be more pure, more pure than words can tell. But when she dances feelings come no man can quell. Beneath her rainbow coloured dress there burns the well. My promised one, please let me one time be untrue. Before in front of god and man I marry you. Who would be the man who'd turn from her to save his soul. To be with her I'd let the devil take me whole. Oh Fleur-de-lys I am a man who knows no law. I go to open up the rose, Esmeralda [Quasimodo, Frollo & Phoebus:] She dances naked in my soul and sleep won't come. And it's no use to pray these prayers to Notre dame. Tell, who'd be the first to raise his hand and throw a stone. I'd hang him high and laugh to see him die alone. Oh Lucifer please let me go beyond god's law. And run my fingers through her hair, Esmeralda. Esmeralda.

Overall, I think the English translation is quite good. However, one line that has always bothered me is "Without my God inside, I'm just a burning shell." For some reason, this line has always struck me as inelegant. The words "burning shell" evoke something bizarre. Better, I think, would be to follow the original image of turning away from heaven, but use a word like "celestial" to rhyme with "tell" in the previous line. I.e. "He put this heat inside me, I'm ashamed to tell/Turning my steps away from the celestial."

This song is beautiful but also horrifying. These three men are calling a woman a demon from hell just because of how she looks. She dances suggestively yes, but woman of ethnic heritage couldn't get jobs during that time it was the only way she could earn money and get food and she's called a demon for that.

Even though it's popular, the lyrics to this Iove song is really disturbing, like stalker/rape disturbing . Beseeching Lucifer to run their fingers through her hair? 'pluck' the flower of Esmeralda's love? Said out loud warrants a punch in the face or elsewhere...

''Beseeching Lucifer to run their fingers through her hair'' Well Quasimodo is in a quite hopeless condition. He knows she will never be with him, but there's nothing he can do about the fellings. He knows that not even God can help him, so he is willing to sell his soul just to be worthy of one touch. And Phoebus, yeah he's an asshole so no excuse for him
