This piece has not been played as this tempo ever and with this intensity, I guess, for last 275 years and another 275. We are living in the golden age at least about Bach.

Evidently, this small-minded individual considers secondary voices as a novelty. How else could his POUNDING them out be explained? Genius? You people are brainwashed. This is a deranged spectacle and nothing else.

I think his transcription is quite literal, he replaces the entire orchestra with the piano, for me it is SPECTACULAR. Of course, we could not expect less from such a magnificent artist.

I feel sorrow, loneliness, melancholy, and recollection of the past. The beauty and spirituality of the music is revealed when it acknowledges all of those feelings, and provides a mellow intimacy of gratefulness, contentment, and companionship. Life-affirming and celestial are my best descriptions of this masterpiece

..Once started playing Bachs mus. A true musician can ‘hear’ the development of a piece, in advance, just like Bacah himself quickly telling when his pupils rehers. In Bachs audience, back in the yrs, were on a ‘wrong path, and adviced this and that in response, like this Fuga shows… at least it did for me, on my first playing etc 👌 G Gould is somewhat inconsistent in hies interpret. Reagarding the comp. Intent… 🎶🎶🎶🎶

Everytime im driving in my truck and Die Meistersinger comes on the Radio i always turn it up full volume and exclaim "Meistersinger?...what else!"
The name Glenn Gould alone sends his fans into raptures. Objectively heard, this interpretation is as bad as a piano student would play it after a few years of lessons. Such a one would be favorably accepted with the words "Well done". I cannot understand the (only subjective) liking. Moreover, Gould's gestures and facial expressions are extremely strange and take some getting used to. Possibly these are perceived as "ingenious"...? (;-)

Fugue subject sublime. Continues in similar vein until about 2 thirds in. Then starts to ramble. Lose proportion. This affects the whole. Bach knew exactly what he was doing and knew what went with what but it is exactly that knowledge which suggests an auto pilot at work so a lack of inspired sounds especially after the 2nd third. A tendency to restate not only tonic key but root note of tonic key taking much from a sense of variety almost usually present in bachs work. It can not be compared to the opening chorus of Matthew passion for example which is more inspired with sense of proportion and the all important variety and much more evident beginning middle and end whereas this is a smush

Strangely perhaps, Gould's interpretation has a distinct ring of this composition's original authenticity, because Wagner stressed time and again the melodiousness and singability of his music, particularly Meistersinger. The same service was performed by conductors like Furtwaengler, Mengelberg, Golavanov, Stokowski, et al.
