How do you go from practice first shot to second shot tournament?

I don't understand why you need to go out of your way and add how much your max is away from the pin, add, say, 20% + 100%, when you can just look at your 100% and estimate the percentage from there? if the 1st bounce is at 60% from the max, then do that, why do I need to add 20 to 100, get 120, divide it by 2, and get the same 60%, what's the purpose? Help me understand please!
