I've done this - it is exhausting work, as that tweed is so heavy when it's wet.

You're right, it's good exercise especially on the arms - for several hours! That's where the singing comes in handy as it keeps the rhythm going and makes the work easier.

Thank you for sharing this! I've seen the proces of walking on the table before (the same group I believe), but not what else happens. I do hope that some day someone will make a video sheep-to-cloth the traditional way ❤ Shears, handspinning, weaving, walking

This was a waulking demonstration at the Auchindrain Township museum near Inveraray, Argyll, Scotland. The tweed was woven by us (Skye Weavers) on the Isle of Skye. You can read more about the whole process on our blog: www.skyeweavers.co.uk/blog/waulking-the-tweed

Hi sorry this is 9 years late, but this fascinates me that the loom is "bicycle" driven, but I can't figure out how the weft is passed. Is there a video on this part?
@SkyeWeavers Жыл бұрын
Hi, our looms are rapier looms. I haven't got a video of the weft insertion on KZbin, but if you search for 'rapier loom mechanism' there's lots of great videos and explanations by other people. A rapier loom uses a rapier or rapier head to insert the weft threads. In our case they're hooked up on the left and pulled through to drop off point on the right. Every weft thread is an individual thread, not an ongoing one as in a shuttle loom.
