Enjoyable series that really game me with some familiarity with the rules. I enjoyed the goal mouth scramble. Just a couple of comments on the application of the saving rule. I think the keeper can save up to three hexes 'parallel to the goal'. However, I think that you were measuring the hexes back towards the corners of the goal. This means that in the first goal the keeper would have not have suffered a penalty as he could cover the ball in two hexes if going parallel to the goal line, although it made no difference to the result. Also I think the shot just before the end of the second half would be uncontested because the GK could not reach it if measured parallel to his position. The rule allows the keeper to close down angles when coming off his line, but means he is vulnerable if the attacker can shoot from a different angle, or if he is in line with the keeper. This actually seems quite logical.

I have enjoyed these videos. Even though they're more than a couple of years old, I thought I would make some comments. There are variation to the rules posted on the \discord site not applied. For example, there is no extra move on a short pass after an interception or loose ball and defenders can use their defence to steal by rolling a 10 or higher to steal or intercept. On a tactical level, I noticed that both of you often used your first defensive move to make a tackle. However, I think it would be better to move others first and then do the tackle as the last option. That way you can cover for failure or set up for success. Finally I think these sessions could have benefited from the extra time rules that add on a certain number of actions after the time finishes. That would have allowed you to finish the current phase and perhaps try one last shot on goal, especially at the end of the first half.
@FTG_CampaignsАй бұрын
Intetesting match. I tied to count the number of phases pkayed in the second hslf. I think it was 19, but I may have miscounted. My idea is not to use time but number of phases. On avetage the ball is in play about 55 mins. So if I round down to 50 mins, thats 25 per half. If we assume each pfase is about 1 min, that would be 25 phases
@FTG_CampaignsАй бұрын
These sessions give me a good base understanding of the rules. I'm not so keen with the timer. I think when Im trying the game solo I'll allow a certain amount of phases in each half to represent time.

Haven't watched yet, but wanted to write down my ranking and compare (I'll edit with comments after I watch). Since players all go first and injured enemies do as much damage as healthy ones, the best thing to do is defeat as many enemies as possible before they get a turn. So damage and damage application (range) is king. Ratings before watching: 8. Healer Cat. Can't just sit around and heal everyone up thanks to threat timers. You will prevent more damage by preemptively taking threats off the board than you will by healing 7. Robot Guy. Normally I like abilities like this because it can reward clever gameplay even when not obviously powerful, but I haven't found much use for repositioning in Cora Quest. Slightly better when paired with Wizard Girl. 6. Dwarf Guy. Ability is really powerful for a melee character (and it's cool to see a dwarf with +mobility), but this just means when his ability is up and relevant he can match the baseline damage of ranged characters that don't need to move before attacking. 5. Sword Girl. Making two characters determined adds 2 white dice which is worse than crossbow dude's extra attack or Sword/Wizard girl's guaranteed damage. Not ranged means she's going to spend more turns moving and not attacking than the next characters. Also better when paired with Wizard girl 4. Hobbit Guy. Ranged means he'll generally do as much damage as melee characters using special abilities, but additionally his ability makes him the toughest character in the game, and especially useful against monsters with a lot of attack dice. 3. Wizard Girl. As much base damage as Crossbow Dude, but ability is much more situational and range is lower. Really takes buffs well though 2. Spear Girl. Guaranteed damage is great for cleaning up messes just before the enemy turn. Also the best for taking non-combat checks. Only range 2, but that's still considerably better than range 1 1. Crossbow Dude. Highest single target damage with little downside, highest range, solid health. No reason to go into a dungeon without him. Watching the video: I remembered Sword girl's ability wrong. We've also been using Spear girl's ability wrong in the same way. Ranking after watching 8. Healer Cat 7. Robot Guy 6. Sword Girl -1 5. Spear Girl -3 4. Dwarf Guy +2 3. Wizard Girl 2. Hobbit Guy +2 1. Crossbow Dude Not sure about Wizard Girl and Hobbit Guy. I'll have to play some more to see which ability comes into play more often and is more important.

I agree 100% with your assessment. My friend and I found it to be a pretty steep learning curve and we spent a lot of time consulting the rule book. But one of us commented early on that this is the sort of game that would improve once you remember where everything is in the rule book. But for us, it's exactly the sort of game we thought we'd pull out and play regularly, especially when we only have 2 players.

Great review! I got this by accident at UKGE but I'm very much the lifestyle target (for a couple of months at least). Art is great; grimy dark works but a bit of brightness would not hurt. The bits are great too thought the tactile nature of all those little pieces which drew me in is also fiddly. I think it's pretty robust except the parts that rely on joining & unjoining cardboard ie the arches. These just get battered. The plastic clips are great. Set up is a pain but teardown is easy. Accessibility is definitely the weak point. There are far too many icons for one off effects some of which I cannot figure out even after reading the rules. The rules are a mess of information. It really needs reference sheets, which I believe you can get, and just not scattering the rules over all the places. There are far too many skills and characters have far too many of them that have limited impact - like 5 skills and 2 skill points to spend on them in a game (you don't get 17 or 18 though maybe 9 or 10). I figure that's the weakest part mechanically. The campaign is a bit repetitive as it's essentially the same map & a similar mission. I do like the arc of the missions and the way the events can give sudden changes. There is plenty to spend cash on with some of the expansions but there is a lot of crap it's true. Also this game was sold to me as the targeted at solo players product which is how I will play it. Semi co-op would be core Core space. I was wondering if you'd seen Maladum? Or at least its KS promotional stuff. It seems to address a lot of these issues - tighter, buffed skills with more passives, fewer icons used in combinations to get the variety, more cash sinks and more limited access to purchases, branching narrative. It has me very excited. It still has a mess of magic effects which may add back some of the faff but it's pretty :)

We did kinda the same with injuries and game changers for sim games. We did that the roll you do that decides the results of the game affects injuries/game changers for the attack and then we roll again two times that only effects injuries/game changers. We did take out quite a few of the game changer cards though, the most OP or worst green or red affects. Also we did our own powerhouse expansion teams which we use in a 2p game (as having the actual expansion isn't necessary. if you know how it works you can just make your own cards or write down the powerhouse teams starting positions and thirds stats and roll to see which one they get). We usually use 2 powerhouse teams in a 2p game. It's too much having to play 4 AI teams and 2 teams works very well. 3 AI teams could be a good middle ground as well. Your rule regarding the unhappy players seems good. But it feels like it will come into play very rarely, as you have to get up to a total stars/starting position that is higher than you finished last season. Let's say even if you only got 6p last season, you would still have to get at least 7 stars or probably more during the off season. But yeah I still think it could be a good rule.

What are people seeing in this that I'm not...... 2-3 hours of dice chucking.......tactics and strategies??? What tactics??? 9/10???
@theboardmasters58002 жыл бұрын
Sorry but I don't see any merit to that argument at all unless you're going to write off all games where the outcome of a conflict has an element of luck to it - if I tried to argue there's no strategy in Gloomhaven because you can pick a card and miss whatever you had planned, I would, quite rightly, be shot down for it. There's loads of decision making throughout the game - what formation are you playing? Are you going risky with 2 very strong thirds or spreading it out over 3? Are you prioritising scouting, developing youth, money generation or hiring staff? Etc, etc. At the end of the day, it's a sport simulation and every single element of competitive sport has an element of luck involved so that needs to be represented in the game.
@TheBrokenMeeple2 жыл бұрын
You mention the decisions you're making but at the end of the day, your ability to win the game is based on two dice rolling and adding stars, and if you do great in one league, you will continue to do better, rich get richer. The poor guy who can't roll to train up his players and is short on cash, have fun! And this game can go from 60 min to 3 hours depending on those rolls. The players are just generic avatars with stars on them, there's no distinction with world players, the main differentiation is the key staff, probably the best element here, but then you just grab the best ones and stick to that (the rules do not mention a face up display they just say pick a staff member).
@theboardmasters58002 жыл бұрын
Your ability to win is based around minimising the impact of the dice roll but the dice do give the players who are losing the opportunity to win. I mean, it's been a while since we recorded the playthroughs of this but I know Chris and I had games where one of us was winning convincingly only to lose overall. Yes, if a player has terrible rolls in matches and training, gets no good draws on scouting or staff, has bad luck with injuries and game changers, etc then it is going to be a rough game for them. Just like it's possible in Gloomhaven to draw the miss card on every single attack or you could just draw white chips in Quacks of Quedlinberg but extreme examples of consistently bad luck aren't representative of the gameplay experience. As for key staff, the rules state that you blind draw 2 cards and then choose to hire 1 or 0 of them. You can't just look through the deck and pick which one you want...
@chrislobb64402 жыл бұрын
On your injury in sim games rule could you not roll one dice after 1-2 is defence, 3-4 is midfield, 5-6 is attack with the overflow becoming a gamechanger. Also wouldnt someone just sub in all their reserves to protect from possible injuries.
@theboardmasters58002 жыл бұрын
You certainly could do that to determine the position, maybe with an additional roll to determine which player in that row takes the injury... As for subbing in reserves, you could have a rule where they have to use the same lineup as the previous game (only changes for injuries/suspensions) or they have to use the same lineup for the next game. In theory, this shouldn't be an issue with the Powerhouses Expansion but I haven't had a chance to table that yet...
@WinOrBinGamingReviews2 жыл бұрын
Really found this video useful but I'd like to ask your view on some gameplay if I may as I can't get a definitive answer in the rules or forums: If a player is choosing to shoot, say 5 hexes away from goal, and then 2 hexes on the path of the ball, a defender is 1 hex next to said point on the path. This means they can deflect the ball and should they be successful, do you think the deflection count starts from the point of the shot path the ball was deflected from, or from the hex the defending player who deflected it is on? The reason I ask is because I had a situation where this happened and it was assumed it'd be from where the ball is on the shot path, but the direction was back towards the player who deflected it, and a distance of 1 meaning it'd be deflected to this player. We felt this didn't feel right as a ball can't really deflect as such to themselves so we thought maybe the rule would be to deflect from the player instead, meaning this wouldn't happen. What's your view?
@theboardmasters58002 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late reply, haven't been very well recently... I believe you were correct with your interpretation of the rules even if thematically it may not ring true. I guess, you just have to think of it as a blocked shot, rather than a deflection. With that said, it looks like they've updated the rulebook now so, on a deflection, you roll a dice to determine whether it goes at goal, out for a corner, etc so maybe check that out.
@WinOrBinGamingReviews2 жыл бұрын
@@theboardmasters5800 interesting you mention that rule as I think I must have found the same book as you before I started playing and that confused me due to the board having the loose ball direction markers. @winorbin8478 think the one I found is the old rulebook so disregard that. Reread the rulebook and it states that deflections are measured from the hex the ball was supposed to pass through so, if it had passed through the defender and he deflected it, it would start from him but, as it was an adjacent hex, it starts from that hex. Of course, if you don't like the rule thematically, feel free to change it.
@GameQ2 жыл бұрын
I use a house rule that fixes the game timer, and just requires some extra tokens (Like coins). Grab 45 tokens of any sort and place them to the side. Every time a movement phase is called, discard a token. These tokens represent minutes of the half. When the 45th token is discarded, you are now in "added time". If the ball is in the final third and possessed by the attacking team, the game continues. If the ball goes out of bounds, is possessed by the defense, or exits the final third, the half ends. You can expand on this as well. Every time an injury happens, add a token back to the pile. This represents the added time for the injury. When the final token is discarded and the game would normally end from the above rules, you can roll against the referee's leniency to see if he will let the game continue. You may want to make a desperate long pass to your opponent's final third to keep the game going. 45 Movement phases per half can take a long time, sometimes we play just 30.
@theboardmasters58002 жыл бұрын
Really clever idea but I definitely agree that that sounds like it'd take a really long time. I guess, with the whole time issue, it is fairly realistic given the ball is in play less than half the time in a real match...
@FTG_Campaigns28 күн бұрын
I realise you made this comment a while ago, but I thought I would comment. I have just bought the game. I agree with the principle of what you are suggesting. I think 25-30 phases per half would be about right. This is based on the idea that the average time the ball is in play for a football match normally ranges between 50 and 60 minutes. So 1 phase per minute. It occurs top me that 27 may be a good number. If you play extra time, that is a straight nine phases per half. There are rules for adding extra actions after time has elapsed by rolling against the ref's leniency, which would add a minimum of three actions (assuming the min leniency is 2. At the very least the phase in course should be finished. I was also thinking that the game keeps going as long as the attacker has possession of the ball in the opponents penalty box, receives a corner or a free-kick he can score from. But these are just potential house rules.
@WinOrBinGamingReviews2 жыл бұрын
Good to watch this being played. I think the reason you can't do a standard pass after a standard pass is to stop time wasting because if you were able to do this an unlimited amount of times, you could literally just keep kicking it back and forth to the same two players.
@theboardmasters58002 жыл бұрын
Oh I completely agree that it could definitely be exploited but that is a genuine real life tactic as well. Maybe could have a rule where each subsequent pass, the defensive player can move an extra hex? Although it doesn't really need any rule changes to be honest, just a thematic issue really.

In regards the skill and some rules it can become a pain, there are cards per class with the skills and fan made stuff to fasten up rule references, item abilities, etc, I truly advise the first 2 games just concentrate on gameplay and haivn ghte skill cards and get to sued what they do to start using them. But its not to be sacred of the game is amazing.

As I said in the video, I think that if we'd been able to play it regularly then it would have been a much better experience. As it was, we just never got to a point where we 'knew' everything and it was getting in the way of enjoying the phenomenal core gameplay...

That's an unfair statement. There are many people (myself included) that collects boardgames and it isn't always possible for us to put board games into play almost immediately or as often as we will like. So instead of commenting that we should change our buying/playing habits, why not simply agree that folks like me don't like app-driven board games as it doesn't fall into our buying/playing patterns? Moreover, many such app-driven board games simply take away the need for the "board" aspect of the game (e.g. Descent 3rd edition). I can simply play off the app without the "board" aspect of the game. It's like playing a pen-and-paper tabletop RPG vs a computer-based RPG.

I don't believe that you need to get them to the table immediately - Xcom was released in 2015 and that still works perfectly on modern devices along with countless other examples. The proportion of app driven games where the app is no longer available to pretty small and is only going to get smaller. But I do agree with you regarding games that take away the need for the board completely but that's an issue of poor design as opposed to the app.

not sure how you have made that much, but I find it a great app if you like playing games, I have currently made £30 in 6 months, and haven't played more than I would before only difference is I have made £30 playing games instead of £0. I could have made more if I spend more time playing, also a quick tip, casino games are good, download the game, set the wager to a minimum, and click auto spin, just check every so often that you haven't hit a bonus.

You don't even really need to press the auto spin as long as you keep the screen open. I tend to just leave a game running next to me whilst I'm playing a computer game or watching TV.

Thanks for this review! To clarify a key point: you have a rough prototype version. In the finished product, the league table will be printed on a game board, and everything will come in a proper game box. The box will be about the same size as the Selfish game box. The league table you used was printed at my local print shop. The league table will also be two-sided so you can play the long game (up to 70 points) or the short game (up to 50 points).

Just bought the game and watching\learning the game. Thanks for this playthrough! Tough game though. There should be a trick to survive with one go at the deck.Will have to figure it out. Its a year since you made it but for newcomers to the game your videos are helpful indeed

Thanks so much for the positive feedback and sorry for such a late reply! Does seem like a strange mechanic that it's easier if you play shorter stints and save regularly as it resets the hunting... Otherwise, it's kind of trial and error where remembering the layout of the island is crucial so you can be more efficient with your travels and know which decisions to make.
