One thing that got repeated a *lot* was, “Bariatric surgery is the *GOLD STANDARD* for weight-loss!” Well, yes, it is. But maybe not for much longer. The most effective forms of bariatric surgery average around 30-35 percent of body weight lost. The current best medications are in the 15-22 percent range. So, pretty big difference. But, the next generation of anti-obesity meds (AOMs), the ones that’ll start showing up in force 2 to 3 years from now (Retatrutide, CagriSema)? They’ll likely be in the 25-30 percent weight-loss range. Recent clinical trial results don’t fully capture this (‘too short Phase 2s’), but that is what you’re looking at. And there’s at least one med later on in that next-gen - MariTide - that was projected at 30-35 percent weight-loss (by the health unit of an investment bank). So, *equalling the gold standard.* 😯 If AOMs were starting to impact the # of bariatric surgeries BEFORE, imagine what they’ll do as we head into the late-2020s. Could easily conceive of a world where bariatric surgery really only gets done on those with *severe* obesity (BMI >40). 🌎 That said, there’ll still be no shortage of potential patients. As Dr Apovian points out, in the US alone, 15+ million ppl have severe obesity. Yet, we do only about 230K bariatric surgeries per year. That number could and should go up, as it’s obviously insufficient against the scale of the problem. So, AOMs are not really the problem. The real problems are education (surgery seems *very* scary, while obesity somehow doesn’t) and access/affordability (not much coverage). 🤷🏼‍♂️

I had a leak after bariatric surgery, it sealed off on it's own, but, I still got sepsis MRSA. Very sick and was hospitalized 6 wks! I was sicker than a dog!

Dr. Bruno Dillemans was my surgeon. Sadly I'm needing further work now to remove my gallbladder as a complication. Have been in so much pain weight has regained due to inactivity, roughly half my loss after the surgery.

I’m trying to go back into the Marines, with everything going on in Europe. I have a gastric sleeve and while I don’t see having one in Boot Camp would have been a good thing I definitely could deploy with a gastric sleeve as an infantryman you just have to hydrate before you eat it’s not very difficult as well I don’t think I ever ate a full MRE I always rationed it out throughout the day I’m interested in the waiver that she is speaking about at the 20:53 mark so that I may bring it to a recruiter so I can try to reenlist I am 31 years old and my clock is ticking. I would like to get back on active duty and train before World War III breaks out rather than get called while I am unprepared, thank you for your time.

Hello, can anyone talk about the absorption issues for patients taking SSRI/SNRI EXTENDED RELEASE medications. With this surgery, is there any studies or papers done on the success for these psychotropic EXTENDED RELEASE (which are only available in some countries/not available separate multiple doses for e.g. Efexxor in Australia....and the answer is not swapping to non EXTENDED RELEASE alternatives, as Efexxor withdrawal is a recognized (especially by patients) serious issue. Is the surface area left after surgery sufficient and the motility time? enough for the absorption of the EXTENDED RELEASE for the medication to as it did prior to surgery? As a layperson, I do not know where this particular medication is absorbed, but drug companies are in the business of keeping people on their medications and are not happy giving information on their drugs, even to prescribing doctors/psychiatrists. I need weight loss desperately to ensure reduction in BP, reduce sleep apneoa, and many obesity related problems....BUT I would rather be a properly psychiatrically medicated fat person than a thinner person whose mental health is compromised (suicidal?) due to medications not being absorbed adequately. What can you tell me about this surgery and absorption of these medications please.????
