Holy shit he's back! I've been subscribed to you since I was in highshcool. You got me hooked on adventure games, which started me on my journey to game dev. I'm 32 now and a professional game engine programmer who works on ports of older titles to modern hardware. Thanks for making awesome content and inspiring me to get into games!

I use 86 Box to use win98. It is quite good, I can also get a connection with Pcap. It does even get an IP address from routers DHCP server but unfortunately it cannot surf the web because of old security policies...

is it better than PCem ? and by the way...the fatboy link doesnt work...any better link for this font?

Just a heads up, that boot floppy from the recommended site does not have format in it. I had to go to a PCem install of w98se that I have to make it right. I wrote all this out in a longer paragraph with more detailed info but something in it wasn't liked by the powers that be and it got deleted or never accepted (and it wasn't a URL). EDIT I just checked and format is on both the full retail (non bootable) and oem (bootable) versions of w98se CDs but that doesn't mean you can pull it off of either of them because the driver for the cd rom might not have loaded when you're trying to format the newly created C drive (you might not have access at that point in time). (google's your friend). I originally grabbed a 95 osr2 boot floppy to get format but then when I plugged in three different 98se keys, it wouldn't accept them. So I'm going to have to delete a lot of things before I try all over again with the boot disk that has format. I don't know how our good host here got it to work w/o format on the floppy. Maybe his grabbed it off the CD but then that begs the question, why didn't mine? EDIT2 Next day got it all working and I found out why the pair of 98se listed keys don't work - on that webpage, in the comments, the key for the non-bootable full retail begins with K4HVD and someone else verified it (just search ctrl+f)

I too love adventures. Thanks for the mention of Morpheus. I'm going to check it out. Since you like adventures, I'm assuming you like puzzles. Can I suggest the game Jewels II: The Ultimate Challenge? It's a three disk game. I loved it back in the day and made it all the way through. You won't get through this in a cupla days - guarantee. Anyhow, I'm using PCem to run win89se and the game uses Quick Time and in my install the audio stutters and echoes so badly that I can't even understand what the guy is saying at the beginning and the Quick Time video is jerky. I have a really nice gaming rig which I built in 2015. I have the original CDs but I just checked and it's available online (all 3 CDs). I wish you'd download it and see if you can straighten out the audio/video problems. My install is sound blaster 16 with S3 ViRGE/DX, Voodoo 2, socket 7 hot-557 166 MHz and Oct of 2006 DirectX9.0c. It shouldn't be choppy but it is and I would love to play it through again. BTW, it (the win98se in PCem) plays Rogue Squadron 3D great. Sure hope you check it out (Jewels II). I'd paste in the URL for it but my whole comment would probably get deleted. Oh, it was published by "H + i a" or something like that and DreamCatcher Interactive. Additional, in the game you're like an archeologist and there are something like eight caves or rooms on three different floors each having its own puzzle. When you solve one, you get its token. Once all 24 tokens are in your chest it's on to the final puzzle. Also, with each puzzle, you have to figure out what you're even supposed to do, then comes the solving. I give it 10 out of 10. I'd start with the room whose icon looks like an hour glass or an X with a line above and below. That's a good, fun easier one and it's on the first floor right after the Professor's room. (If I remember correctly).

If you have a not so performant computer i would rather go the Dosbox->Windows 98 route because Box86 is pure emulation. Your host might be too slow for Win 98. Dosbox is much more performant.

Funny, how I couldn't remember the name of this game until earlier this morning, but I never forgot how dreadful the maze was inside the grotto. Lol

2:46 Can you please help me? When I open 86Box, it gives me an error message saying, "No ROMs found" and it says "86Box could not find any usable ROM images. Please download a ROM set and extract it into the "roms" directory" even though I did all of the steps you did prior to running it.

One game that I have been trying to make it work on modern PCs is "Jetfighter IV: Fortress America" you could try to run it to see if you're successful with it.

God I remember playing the Wing Commander series as a kid. Watching Pilots die or half failing missions I thought was a part of the game and not just a variant of the story. I do miss this era of games where the Pc had such gorgeous 2D graphics. The music was pretty incredible too once we got the SoundBlaster16 card. Hope you’re doing well and will upload more videos in 2023 and on! I have to go through some of these older videos I’ve never watched It sucks you Didn’t keep on making these review type videos on KZbin. I know these are 12 years old but they are very well made and written for those days. Maybe just a little too ahead of your time I remember going to see the Wing Commander film in theaters with my dad. May he rest in peace, passed last August 2022

I just managed to play Colin McRay Rally 1 (1998) in Windows 98 with Voodoo 3 3000 PCI Virtual Card on my MacBook Air 2020 M1 .. And it runs like a charm!! I have emulated Pentium 2 Deschutes CPU. Your ISO and video helped a lot!! Thanks !!

you literally skipped the 1 thing i was having issues with. I cant load the windows 98 files into the 86box. all i have is a black screen...

Brilliant tutorial! I now have an issue with full-screen mode. When in full screen, why should my mouse interpret a double-click as a "right-click-properties" action. For example, if I double click an icon or folder, I get the properties of that icon or folder. I have tried different mouse emulations, etc. I didn't get this with PCEM, but I totally prefer 86box otherwise.

Seeing '13 years ago' on videos freaks me out 😅 happy to have found this one though. I've been trying to find other adventure game reviewers since Pushing up Roses stopped doing game retrospectives so I'm hoping I've now got a few to watch on you channel. Great video 😊

The entire charm of these old adventure games was the fact that the game was not giving you clues. It was like real life. You had to look around and think what might be useful or how it could be used. This completely vanished over time. All you had to do in later games was pick up objects that were clearly marked or use them without being specific, while the game took over and assumed the manner in which you intended to use the thing. I love early Sierra games because there were almost no clues and you had to explore every scene and figure out what and how might be used. Without that, you barely even have a game.

Good tutorial, but nothing new for me, except for the autopatcher thingy which i dont normally use. I simply try to install my games and if one fails, i install the dependency that the game requires, such as directX 6/7/8, setup msi fixes, etc. Also you should note that, 86Box is really slow because it is more accurate than other emulators. With my 7950X, running a AMD K6 III+ with 450 MHz in 86Box is not possible, getting only 50-70% emulation when under load. With PCem its no problem, its always 100% or in worst case 95% under heavy load - but with a voodoo 3 PCI instead of AGP.

Just played through the game and a few thinks stand out. the Game has 1 item that isn’t standing out from the background and is easy to overlook. unskipable dialogue is the Games biggest flaw. Since you never know if a topic has new dialogue. Often you will have to listen to the same minute of banter you already know. unskipable Travel sequences are frustrating as well. around 3 or 4 times the Motivationsprobleme the next plotpoint/puzzle will not be apparent. When you either simply don’t have a new objective or you have to visit a place you have seen before to trigger a now unlocked event. the 2 NPCs companions are infuriatingly confrontational for no reasons. Especially in such a situation. none of the characters react in any way realistically human to the situation they are in. One puzzle is extremely annoying since there are plenty of ways you could be wrong. Since many options look just as right as the real one. over all I like the game for its story and creativity. But it’s far from the nicest gaming experiences

It would be cool if input wouldn't flake out within a few minutes in a game. Its a known bug that's not really being dealt with until version 3.5 or so. Its currently 3.11. It would be neat to play old school Diablo like it should. But right now its not to be.
