People on benefits getting more than people working????? It's not the benefits that are wrong. It is minimum pay that is wrong. It was started to stop a few farmers ripping imigrant workers off. They brought in a minimum pay if you payed less you would be in court. Then thousands of businesses jumped on board. The government's did nothing to stop them. Minimum pay is not a recomended pay level. It is the bare minimum to stay out of prison

China actually looks like an Olympic contender, yet he's WAY too interesting to be interested in any of that crap. Keep writing, China, and we'll avidly keep reading; The City & The City was so out there it almost made me give up on my dream of getting a book published.
@vollsticks2 жыл бұрын
Mate, have you read This Census Taker and Last Days Of New Paris yet?! Absolutely STUNNING novellas. As much as I love his Bas-Lag stuff, Embassytown, The City And The City these former works present a new side to Meiville. One of the best writers of his generation, in any genre
@markpaterson20532 жыл бұрын
@@vollsticks Yeah, he's so good it intimidates me, so I try not to think of his work when I'm being creative. I wish they'd do a show of the Bas-Lag novels, but then again, I don't.
@vollsticks2 жыл бұрын
@@markpaterson2053 Oh man, I feel the same. I still haven't watched The City And The City even though I heard it's good...Bas-Lag exists so richly in my imagination I'm not sure any screen treatment could live up to it. I think Iron Council would be better suited for a film or TV adaptation because of it's structure..imagine seeing the Judah Low flashbacks in a theatre, it's certainly be a spectacle if done right! Problem is I can't think of anyone who COULD "do it right"...
@markpaterson20532 жыл бұрын
@@vollsticks You're right, and they just wouldn't get how the mood is meant to be in that world. The City and the City was an easier task, so the tv show is actually pretty cool; the world was closer to our world so it was easier to emulate the novel. But I can't imagine a Weaver having any presence at all in CGI, lol
@vollsticks2 жыл бұрын
@@markpaterson2053 Oh goodness me, yes. "BIG SPIDER SCARY", amirite? It'd be extremely difficult to communicate the religious awe that The Weaver inspires and they'd probably make the Vodyanoi look shitty. It's too big an undertaking and would just end up a mess. Maybe the Guillermo Del Toro who made Pan's Labyrinth or Hellboy 2 could approximate some of Bas-Lag if you gave him a stupidly massive budget...But my imagination will do the job just fine for now, I think!

The problem is systemic and much wider and the only thing that matters is wealth. It dictates where someone can live, which in turn dictates which school they go to, which will have a massive impact on their future and work. Except now the jobs people would go into don't exist because of austerity, cuts on strained services etc. and zero hour contracts. Cost cutting measures economically strangle people yet make people richer. Whilst this is most people's reality, the rich can afford to live in the nicest areas, receive the best treatment and send their kids to the best schools and secure a highly probable good future for them. It has nothing to do with education or merit or talent. This system is designed to keep people in boxes and subdued. The divide is now predicated on wealth, not talent, nor education nor opportunity, and the gap has got bigger and bigger.

The Banks were deregulated by Thatcher in the 1980's. In the real world Mark Steele, Tory austerity is about a Dwindling State because the Tory's do not believe in the role of the State. Furthermore the Tory's rely on attacking the welfare state to get votes of small minded people who believe everything they are told by the right wing media, the Tory Government, and the BBC uphold this carnage. Mark Steel does not grasp that this Dwindling State began under Thatcher over 30 years ago, when Thatcher cut the value of old age pensions for the elderly, and attacked the miners, the coal mines, and their communities.
