Opened makeup products become a petri dish for bacteria and mold. There's also the potential for the chemicals and compounds in the makeup to break down into harmful substances. You don't want any of that near your eyes.

Because you don't know in which way the chemicals may have gone bad and you're putting it right next to your eyeballs.

To fully explain, makeup shouldn't be used much past it's expiration date, which is usually a few months at best. This is because that's the earliest point where the bacteria or chemicals could turn in such a way as to be potentially dangerous. I.e infections. Mascara and liquid eyeliner is particularly bad as the eyes are very sensitive and more prone to infection than other parts of the face, as well as liquids in general being faster to form bacteria. Mascara has an expiration daye of usually about three months. IRYS was going to use some that was over eight years old.

Makeup once opened typically has a useby date, and past that its kinda gambling? Some have ingredients that actually go off, but mostly: it's a thing you've been opening, sticking a applicator into or a brush, rubbing said applicator or brush onto your skin, then sticking back into the product. No matter how clean you are, your skin has bacteria and germs on it and you just put that bacteria and germs into your makeup product. Within the use by date this isn't really gonna be a problem but image what has being growing and breeding on a moist, 8 year old mascara brush that hasn't being cleaned or even rubbed off. Now imagine Bae's terror when Irys said she was gonna put that NEAR HER EYEBALL.

Considering mascara is something you put around your eyes... why are we taking chances here? 😂

Because in the end, it is chemical that can downgraded into a toxic with times.

That's the stuff they put on eyelashes, so it's near a really important and sensitive part, the eyes. And with something that old, you won't know if it has gone moldy, or something gone off, or it could degrade into something toxic, or trigger an allergic reaction. Worst case scenarios we're in "loss of sight, permanent scarring" territory here.

I don't know jack about makeup but also I immediately thought, that she is kinda using it from time to time already, wouldn't dead skin and bacteria and oil built up on that?

This is me with masculine skin and hair care. And I'm just so paranoid and cynical of how any attempt to find answers on this stuff will only turn up schemes and grifters looking to exploit you rather than any actual research on how these aspects of human physiology actually works! Same with weight management, exercise, and nutrition. Doctors don't even help with this stuff because they are so imbedded with these companies...

I mean there is a difference between not knowing how to style yourself and using almost a decade old product.
