I one day hope to have a barber who will sing this with me😂❤

I think “Pretty Women” has so much depth when you look at the subtext. To me, Sweeney Todd’s lyrics aren’t about women in general but specifically about his wife, Lucy. He’s reminiscing about the small, intimate moments he shared with her. Lucy wasn’t just a pretty woman; she was the pretty woman to him-the proof of heaven. Now, compare that to Judge Turpin’s lyrics. These lines feel shallow and voyeuristic, focused entirely on physical appearance and lust. Turpin is obsessed with women like Lucy and Johanna, and his words reveal his predatory nature. The way the Johnny Depp/Alan Rickman version is performed adds even more layers. It’s intimate and less theatrical, which lets the lyrics shine. Depp’s delivery gives Sweeney’s lines a quiet sadness, as if he’s clinging to Lucy’s memory. Meanwhile, Rickman’s smooth, sinister tone makes Turpin’s lines feel disturbingly detached and voyeuristic. “Pretty Women” is so much more than just a chilling duet-it’s a window into how these two men view the same woman through vastly different lenses. It’s haunting and tragic.

Between Johnny Depp and Tim Burton, I kind of wonder if Alan Rickman held his breath during the first time or two they shot the part where Todd started shaving the Judge. That and had his assistant standing by with 9-1-1 ready to dial on their phone.

All these years later, and Alan Rickman singing "Glancing" at 3:07 still gives me instant chills. Plus having the timing of Johnny wiping his blade match the syllables of the word being sung... alongside him gently holding the corner of the chair as he softly sings the next line... Never known why that particular moment hits different, but it _really_ does. 💙

so basically Lovett got Lucy out of the way so she could have Todd for herself, Turpin got Todd out of the way to have Lucy for himself, and Anthony murdered someone and broke into an asylum as well as committed stalking because he wanted Johanna just a bunch of lustful people all around

Mister Todd? At your service An honor to receive your patronage, m'lord You know me, sir? Who in this wide world does not know the great Judge Turpin? What may I do for you today, sir? A stylish trimming of the hair? A soothing skin massage? Sit, sir, sit! You see, sir, a man infatuate with love Her ardent and eager slave So fetch the pomade and pumice stone And lend me a more seductive tone A sprinkling, perhaps, of French cologne But first, sir, I think a shave! The closest I ever gave You're in a merry mood today, Mr. Todd 'Tis your delight, sir, catching fire From one man to the next! 'Tis true, sir, love can still inspire The blood to pound, the heart leap higher! What more (what more) Can man require, than love, sir? More than love, sir! What, sir? Women! Ah, yes, women Pretty women! Now, then, my friend Now, to your purpose Patience, enjoy it Revenge can't be taken in haste (make haste) (and if we wed you'll be commended, sir!) My lord! And who may it be said is your intended, sir? My ward! A pretty little rosebud! Pretty as her mother? What? What was that? Nothing, sir! Nothing! Pretty women, fascinating Sipping coffee, dancing Pretty women are a wonder Pretty women Sitting in the window or standing on the stair Something in them cheers the air Pretty women (silhouetted) Stay within you (glancing) Stay forever (breathing lightly) Pretty women Pretty women Blowing out their candles (blowing out their candles) Or combing out their hair (combing out their hair, then they leave) Even when they leave (even when they leave you and vanish) They still are there (they somehow can still remain there with you) They're there (there, with you are) Pretty women at their mirrors (in their gardens) Letter-writing, (flower-picking) weather-watching How they make a man sing! Proof of heaven, as you're living! Pretty women, sir! Pretty women, yes! Pretty women, oh! Pretty women! Pretty women, sir!
