Thank you for your video. I am 60, with skiing, snowboarding, SUPing and windsurfing experience. I do not have problems with up to 30 knots wind on windsurf, like on Karphatos but still think that wing foil will be a huge challenge :-) Just bought Gong 5.3" with 5m2. Hope will survive 😅.

I am 55 years old and ordered my 1st foil setup 2 days ago. I can't wait to get it, but I hope I have the endurance to pull it off. I have surfed, I still skateboard, water ski, roller blade and hope these things will come into play. I also sail with a Hobie Adventure Island sail kayak so I know how to work the wind. Thanks for setting my expectations.

Hi Scott. Based on the activities that you already do I would for sure reckon that you will be able to learn winging foiling, with a fast pace! I wish you the best progression into this fantastic sport. Btw. I just had session number 30, and I can tell you that unless you keep pushing yourself in new environment such as swell and waves, it will get a lot easier on the body. I started exploring sailing with a harness after session 15 also. I think I could get through entire sessions with a heart rate of 120-140 bpm in average.
@djscottyb_texas

@@simon-surf Thanks for the comment. I added the harness to my order when I placed it. I figured less stress on my upper body. I'll post my progress when I get it next week. I am in North Texas so no surf for me. Just lakes for now.

Do yourself a huge favor, get a hardboard... You will crash so much less! As soon as those inflatable boards touch water, it's almost certain game over. I had the exact same board (HIPE pro) with the same problems. I switched to a Fanatic Skywing and never looked back. It's like cheating.
@simon-surf
@simon-surf Ай бұрын
Thank you so much for your insights. It’s really hard to know when you have only tried one kind of board. In windsurfing, surfing, and stand-up paddling I have mostly used hard boards, however, in wing foiling, I have only tried the inflatable once from Gong. Therefore, I have no idea whether or not this behavior is normal to foiling.
@michielfermie6222
@michielfermie6222 Ай бұрын
@@simon-surf I rented a hardboard (Fanatic) last year and was sold immediately. It's get's me on foil WAY faster and touching the water is not an immediate crash. It's funny, because I also started winging on the "normal" beginnerset HIPE, like you. It was very good to get started and make fast progression but the HIPE PRO was a bit of a mistake for me.
@watercrazylion
@watercrazylion Ай бұрын
I agree that hardboards are better shaped than inflatables. Also the surface of an inflatable is not as smooth as a hardboard. But It is hard to generalize experience without the dimensions of the boards. I am also on my second HiPe and have tried two hard boards too. I did not experience any difference in starting or crashing. I never crash my inflatable when touching the water. What helps me are the footstraps. When you touch the water, bury the nose in the wave or get hit by a wave like in this movie, my footstraps push the board trough and keep me standing. Although I would love to have a hardboard, I would ding it all the time.
@michielfermie6222
@michielfermie6222 Ай бұрын
@@watercrazylion You are right. Those are my experiences and could be very different for someone else. For reference, my HIPE Pro is 115 liters, my Fanatic is 95 liters, I'm 95 kilos and I'm an intermediate rider (started in August). I do ride both boards with foot-straps. What I notice is that the HIPE pro is stickier. It takes (a lot) more effort to get on the foil. And the Fanatic is much more forgiving when touching the water or catching a wave. I've tried multiple hardboards (Tabou Magic Carpet, Duotone Skyfree, JP X-Winger) and they all pretty much release much faster then the inflatables do. I have or have owned the HIPE First and the HIPE Pro and tried the JP Wing Air.

@@michielfermie6222 Thanks for your elaborate answers! Interesting! Last remark: my 95L HiPE Pro is easier to lift than my 145 HiPE V1. I think that is because I can pump it easier. Vertical like a cork and also in pitching, because it has has no buoyancy left with my 90kgs plus gear.

I don't know about Ahl beach. It has a reputation for being quite shallow and I've never foiled there. It tends to be mainly kite surfers who hang out there. However, there are plenty of other good options a few kilometres from Ahl, such as the bay at Ebeltoft, Blue Flag, at Ebeltoft Windsurf Club, Øer spidsen, Øer ferry port, Femmøller beach.

But otherwise, the good beginner spots are: 1) The bay along Ebeltoft, where it works both onshore and sideshore. 2) Between the piers at the ferry harbour around Øer, also known as "wing piers". 3) Begtrup Vig, is a really nice spot (but can waves). All very beginner-friendly, depending on the wind conditions of course.

Thank you. I'm 56 years old and want to learn how to wing this summer. I was curious what to expect and this is helpful. I've done water skiing and snowboarding in the past...maybe that will help a small amount. Seems about like learning to ride a bike or play guitar....very frustrating at first, but if you keep trying it doesn't take long for it to start becoming fun.

Can you please confirm me differences from tabou 3s 117 and tabou rocket+ 123 ? Thanks !!
@simon-surf
@simon-surf Ай бұрын
The two boards are sailed differently. The 3S definitely feels more like a wave board than the rocket plus. With the 3S you cannot apply that much back foot pressure, whereas with the rocket plus you can really apply pressure, and lean out. The rocket plus is, of course, more directional, and somewhat less playful. If I could only have one board, it would definitely be the 3S. But if you do mostly speed runs, straight line surfing, the rocket plus would be more appropriate, potentially in a smaller size than mine.
