Hello. Great video. Can you tell me where one can get the tabi the master wears? It looks like they aren't slippery allowing him a good stance but they are full feet model as well as far as I can see. I guess it is tricky to find tabi for kendo for they should allow you to slide as well as keeping yourself firm during close encounter etc. Thanks!

There's a lot of confusion in the comments. Sumi Sensei (lighter Gi) is training Honda (darker gi). He is acting as motodachi. Its not of any value to beat up your students senseless during sparring. They learn nothing this way. So what he is doing is building the pressure and inviting them to do the same. Sometimes he will show opportunities sometimes they must create them without him doing so for them. If they make strong attacks where mind sword and body are as one they will be allowed through. If they lack something they will be stopped or counter attacked. This is how we learn in Kendo. By doing and not so much by talking. We rely on our seniors supressing their egos and being generous enough to allow us to hit them so that we can learn how it feels to execute strong techniques with full commitment. Simply put Sensei is not fighting 100% here. He is mostly coaching and taking the odd opportunity to practice some techniques when its appropriate. To undestand how intense it is to face him you have to be there. I have had a couple of keiko with him and I can tell you its like running into a brick wall thats advancing on you and you feel powerless to stop him. When you here his kiai (voice) you feel it in your gut. And yes, these techniques do cut with live blades. You'll be amazed what you can do with your fingers and wrists when they're relaxed. We also use forward momentum (or back in some cases) to assist the cutting action. Like slicing bread. You dont just wack down into it do you? No you slice back and forth with light downward pressure so the cut stays clean and straight. This also (in a battlefield scenario) allows us to drive through one opponent and onto the next without the blade becoming stuck in the first opponent. Kendo is as much about being ready for the next attack as is about getting the one at hand bang on.

Korean team does not notice that he strikes the tsuki! Because they do not consider about seme! Kendo is not 'hit game'. Kendo is an art about people's mental fight! Korean have to know that thing!!

Pathetic, pedantic, and totally delusional! Of course, sense the Federation believes sticking you hand between your legs is a rational way to sit down, who could thereafter expect any common sense!

Children can make a sword sing to Kirioroshi but 4th Dans that can only make silent draws is dubious, at least the guy with the glasses seems to be getting the idea on some chiburi! Also why are there so many spectators making noise during the second act! Anyway to do Kesa Giri and have a silent draw is shameful!

Lol look united Korean exactly when would you have to cut someones head of with a real sword in todays society? You couldn't use it against a robber cuz it's illegal to carry around a sword too. Also all of these movements could be performed with a katana but they would indeed be a bit slower but not much and still just as effective. I could be wrong, I've only studied kendo and Iaido for 3 years so please correct me if wrong.

That is where we differ. I actually train with a live blade so that I can cut any attacker's head off if necessary.
@Mrakoplasz11 жыл бұрын
First off, if you wore a real blade in a sparring, it wouldn't be really safe, would it? Secondly, the shinai can be heavier than any sparring sword made of metal, thanks to its special construcion, which allows it to be heavier and safe at the same time. Secondly, I think you should ask an experienced kendoka to cut some tameshigiri for you (it is as hard to cut as a human body part is). You can only dream of beating him in that. Lastly, we don't do kendo to chop people's heads off.

What I meant is this ===> You can't weild a much heavier live blade like that in a real sword fight. This fight is just unrealistic. As if you can cut anything with a live blade at a flick of the wrist. Those people won't be able to cut shit with a real sword with that kind of cutting motion.

Stupid comments do not need to be commented. However I suggest United Korean to get more involved in kendo before saying anything. On the other side although ronisworld1can be upset because of the ignorance of United Korean, offensive comments will not help to explain kendo.

This is good stuff. Happy people still practice! It's as traditional as Thai fighters, wushu, tai chi. Good stuff.

Yep, you´re right, my english is poor, so I didn´t explained it right. I don´t want to say final move as the "final move" of a kata or something. I want to say that is used when you attack like it will be the last hit, the end of a combat, wich means a mortal move. When you focus all your energy, your power, your streght and technique (In the end, your "KI") in a final movement. When you really gives all! That´s why you can see ppl using "Kiai" in a tournament combat when they try to do Ippon

Having been fortunate enough to have trained with Sumi Sensei some years ago when he came to the UK it was wonderful to watch his skill in this video. He is the polite man I have ever met. It was am honour to have known him.
