One thing I've noted in seeing a few of your videos is that you are very abrupt with your throttle movements. I was taught not to do that because your engine can cool too quickly, Metal expands when it gets hot so in cooling the outer engine (via the cooling fins) The cylinder walls get tight (the cylinders shrink) against the pistons which are still enlarged from the heat. Throttle movements (particularly in removing power) should be done over a period of time. Remove power down to 25% or so and in 30 seconds or so you should be able to safely take it down to idle. In cold weather or lower temperatures (maybe even due to altitude) this is particularly important and, the mentioned 25% power for 30 seconds cool down should maybe be extended to one minute. Don't believe me? Ask your mechanic. Be safe my friend! Robert
@FromtheHangar Жыл бұрын
Cooling as a source of engine damage is a myth: www.avweb.com/ownership/shock-cooling-time-to-kill-the-myth/ Of course you should move the throttle smoothly to avoid mechanical stress from yanking things around. But that's only a case of taking 3 seconds instead of 0.5 to fully open or close the throttle. Not 30 seconds.

you dont use flaps for power off stalls?
@FromtheHangar Жыл бұрын
We teach multiple combinations, clean, approach and landing configuration, full stall or recover at the first indication of the stall, and recovery with and without power. It's up to the examiner to ask for the combination they want to see, so we practice many different ones. And also in a climbing and descending turn, those are also exam options.

quick question regarding the strainer drain shouldnt it be drained 2 times since the fuel selector has Off/L/R so one at a time?
@FromtheHangar2 жыл бұрын
Yes if you follow the expanded checklist from the POH they tell you to do it twice, once for each tank. In practice advice varies from not checking it at all (I think that's not a good idea, there could be something wrong in the gascolator), checking one side, or indeed checking both. A reason sometimes given for not checking it at all is that having it stuck open can cause engine issues as well. So considering that, do check that it closes property after draining, even a little drip is an issue. And if you want to be thorough check with both sides.

You should never leave the electrics on. Especially if you are going round the front of the aeroplane. What you should do is your non electric checks first and then turn on your electrics and get someone to help you. ATC would usually tell you if your taxi, nav and landing lights are not working. You should also never walk around the front of an aircraft if it is not yours for example what if you have a deaf person with you, they don’t see you walk around the back, that aircraft starts and gets ran over.
@aliptera2 жыл бұрын
"You should never leave the electrics on" - how do you check stall warning? walking around takes 2 minutes, there is no substantial battery drain in so short time, and if there is you need to replace your battery asap. There is a risk the engine could start if you move the propeller, but has nothing to do with electrics being on. The engine could fire if there is a malfunction on magnetos grounding circuit, but that is usually checked at the end of powering down.
@FromtheHangar2 жыл бұрын
Indeed, engine start on a typical GA plane is due to the ignition not the electrics. But @Cameron's concern is a valid one, props are dangerous, so it's good to take the keys with you before doing a walkaround.
