Hi Mario, Email me; brentsprops at gmail dot com. I am not the builder, but I was present for a lot of the build, and helped with some bits. I think I can put you in touch if there's anything I can't answer. Cheers, Brent.

What do you think of the simonini?
@Brenttheaviator
@Brenttheaviator 4 жыл бұрын
Overall I like the simonini. Good points are great power to weight ratio, and haven't experienced any reliability issues yet. I had one of my own in a Rans S-10, and that also went well. Being two stroke makes it simple to do an inverted system as no oil to worry about. Parts are cheaper than rotax. Negatives are they're not as smooth as a rotax. Very lumpy at low power. Build quality is not as good and you need to check it over and make sure everything is torqued up properly before first run. There are some unrealistic claims made about fuel consumption on the website but real world figures of around 16-18 lph at reasonable cruise speed are still not bad.I could get down to 11lph with a simonini in a skyranger at lower cruise power. It's a bit heavier than they claim too. Installed ready to fly with radiator, coolant, exhaust etc is closer to 60kg. But that's ok.

Hey I'm looking at the AC35 to make an electric outboard motor for my sailboat. Seems like yours is running well. Did you put an aircooled or water cooled variant in this project?
@Brenttheaviator
@Brenttheaviator 6 жыл бұрын
Finding Simon Yes, it's done about 20,000 km now and it's going great. Both the motor and controller are air cooled. The controller is bolted to a large finned aluminium heat sink and stays very cool, not more than about 20° above ambient. The motor gets a bit warm if you drive it hard but is fine during normal driving. We use about 150 amps continuous at 108v on the open road with no problem. I think it would be great in a sail boat!

Any chance to see a finished project video of your electric car? I have done three so far. I have videos on my site. Mine are DC but have an AC-35 for my VW Bus.

hi Peter, yes I've been meaning to, the car has been on the road for about a year now and done about 11000km. it's going great. I definitely recommend the HDTV AC motors, they're much more efficient than the brushed DC. unfortunately my health is not so good and I can no longer hold a camera or operate a normal computer. I'd like to do another video though so I might get someone to help me.. good luck with the van, I like the idea of a vw van conversion., maybe with solar panels on the roof for trickle charging.

The camera angle and the movement of the plane make the propeller look to do some crazy things... Anyone else see that?

Isn't there some way that communications from the front pilot to the instructor at the back could be improved?
@Brenttheaviator
@Brenttheaviator 11 жыл бұрын
The intercom in that particular plane is pretty awful, probably a combination of the noise level in the front cockpit and a less than perfect headset. Usually he just does joy rides with the front controls removed and the passenger gives hand signals to indicate if they're having fun or ready to stop. The Pitts S-2A I'm flying now has much better coms.

Hi , The Simonini works fine on a faster aircraft, in fact it shouldn't make any difference to EGT s long as the aircraft has the right prop, and CHT is controlled by the thermostat. The Baby Lakes cruises about 90kt, or about 105mph roughly burning about 16 lph. The baby is quite draggy. I haver flown three simonini powered Skyrangers (but not Ninja). Contact me through my website "Thompson dash aero dot com" if you would like to know more. Regards, Brent

Nice video! Are you happy with the simonini engine? I'm thinking to install it in a skyranger ninja, but I'm afraid of the two stroke behavior in a relative fast plane (110mph cruise, to less drag can means high EGT and low CHT). Do you had any problem with it? What your maneuvering speed? Regards from Brazil! Fly safe!

Yep, I understand the problem, and, you're right, it wouldn't have been pleasant or informative to listen to. Little choice but to add some kind of track.

Fair comment, I would too if it sounded half decent, but unfortunately the audio taken by the cameras is a combination of "wind in microphone" crackle and very distorted two stoke roar which just isn't nice to listen to. Silence didn't seem right either. Thanks for the comment.

Nice video, beautiful plane and decent aerobatics, but I would much rather have heard engine and prop loading during maneuvers than music. I had a Baby for several years, never flew it and sold it to a guy who has done a beautiful job getting her airworthy again.

The simonini is not a smooth as a rotax, but I think it's quite acceptable at normal operating revs. It gets a bit shaky at idle. Peter spent quite a lot of time tuning the carbs to get the best result. I'm currently installing a Simonini Victor 2 in my Rans S-10 and I think the benefit of a great power to weight ratio outweighs the slightly higher vibration for that application. Cheers, Brent.

@@Flightstar Peter (who was the builder and owner) sold the plane about three years ago. But he recently caught up with the new owner, who is flying it regularly still with the same engine.
