I wasn't getting anything until I went into the keystep setting in Arturia MIDI Control Centre and changed the GATE CV Output to V-trig 12v. Something to try if you're not having success. Luckily the octave range on the Werkstatt seems to have been perfectly calibrated. Maybe the previous owner did it.

Thanks for the simple explanation, but looking at the details I realised that my Expander is different from yours. I have no Gate Out, but have a Gate In, and it is in a different position. Weird, but I guess it will work out. Now to figure out how to connect it to my new Mavis.

I haven't noticed, but okay. Still, I wanted to figure out how to use the Werkstatt as a CV source, as there is now no Gate-Out, only a KB CV-Out for pitch. From reading the manual, these connections all exist in the patchable header, but they are not patched into the CV Extension. Only 12/22 connectors are patched out, hence the differences in versions. Unfortunately the Moog Mavis (aka Werkstatt v2) is the same, no Gate-Out - so I have not figured out how to connect the two without a Sequencer to drive both. My 3rd Moog, the Theremini also only has the CV-Out for pitch (but no CV inputs) so this must be a cheaper Moog thing.

My friend's Dad was and is still a producer and a sound engineer. Back in the 90s I used an SC-88vl and a Yamaha MU50 which were there as a half decent alternative to my own Yamaha and Casio keyboards and the grungy Tascam Porta One 4 track cassette recorder. In 1998 the SC-88vl was sold for an SC-88 Pro but I ended up with both the MU50 and SC-88 Pro because my friend's Dad moved onto using Reason. I still use my midi sound modules to record backing tracks even though I have more up to date samplers like Halion 6 and Kontakt. I recently bought 2 more rack modules including a Roland U-220 which many of the Sound Canvas sounds came from.

Still looking for info on how to connect to other equipment. I have a grandmother. I find it confusing regardless of what I learn. This is useful but I can't find much useful info to help get me started with the werstatt. There's a lot that's obvious and a lot of concrete shit I see I'm clearly missing in using the Werkstatt. I'm sure there's more clever stuff I can do and the main thing that I find confusing is these outputs and how they relate to the grandmother's inputs and what possibilities there are. I have experimented, read, watched videos...inputs still not confident...and that's weird for me as I'm usually doing the react opposite and feeling very confident in my mastery of the thing with synths. Most things I try just make bullshit muffled noises or do nothing. I'm sure I'm fucking this up and it's all me but I'd love to find more material with real teeth like this video. Things that produce real out comes. Before I start opening it up and soldering I'd like to at least understand what the basic thing does without mods.

Watched your video again. Good information and again, thanks. Just hooked my two devices up identically. I'm a novice at this, it's working but I notice a significant loss of the initial Moog 'punch' when a key is depressed and and also a loss of sustain, compared to how the Moog sounds when standalone - muffled; it almost sounds like a cassette player with the dolby function engaged. The 'punch' I refer to is perhaps voltage loss when the key is pressed or released? I don't know and again, I'm a beginner and my terminology is probably suspect. I've twiddled and tweaked things again and again but can't seem to overcome the issue. Also I noticed the chord function isn't working; I don't think that would be the fault of the Moog being monophonic because that information is stored, one key at a time, in the KeyStep's memory, I believe. When a keystroke is pressed to release the created chord, it should be a monophonic note received to the Werkstatt. Any thoughts, anyone? Thanks.

Hello! I am confused on how this works! is the midi output converted through the keystep into it's 3 voltage ports --> then goes into the Werkstatt--> where the sound is then relayed through the werkstatt's line out and into your interface and out of the DAW (as an external instrument) through your speakers? Or is there a CV plugin you have to get to make this work on Ableton, even with the keystep? (I ask for the clarification bc im trying to use an akai 49 to do this, only it does not have cv gate outputs only midi and usb, so trying to figure out what converter I need to make a chain into a scarlet 212 interface) hope this makes sense Thank you! Sera
@circkus
@circkus 2 жыл бұрын
There is no DAW in this example, and I use Reaper, so I'm going to be useless for what to do in Ableton. Hopefully I can help a little anyway. The KeyStep has MIDI IN and OUT and CV out. The CV out is the key to controlling the Werkstatt. Anything that sends CV out (there are some details about voltage, I'm speaking generally here) can control the Werkstatt. The Werkstatt is not different from any other synth, or even a guitar as far as your audio connection is concerned, Werkstatt audio out into audio interface in. If you're able to send MIDI to any other synth, sending MIDI to the Keystep controller is the same. You want to send FROM the DAW on the same channel that the Keystep is listening on. The Keystep then converts the MIDI data into CV signals, and sends that out to the Werkstatt. DAW MIDI OUT -> Keystep MIDI IN / Keystep CV out -> Werkstatt. The original Keystep is fairly affordable at around $125 the last time I checked, and it's dead easy to hook up. If you can get a MIDI to CV converter, it should do the same trick. The Keystep is just a good MIDI to CV converter. Good luck!

Thank you for this, it helped me hook up my Arturia Keystep 37 with the Werkstatt. I'm having an issue with the Werkstatt though. There's a constant note (tone) generated right as I plug it in and any note (button) I play will continue indefinitely until I press another key. Did not use to do that a few months ago when I bought it. I've tried adjusting or turning off the Sustain switch and knobs and it does nothing to change it. Just constantly plays the last note I played until I hit a new one, then that just plays indefinitely etc. Does anyone have any ideas on this? The Werkstatt is not very old but I'm wondering if something has gone faulty, or if it's just my lack of programming skills? Any advice is appreciated!

The VCA (voltage controlled amplitude) switch has two modes, ON and EG (envelope generator). ON behaves as you're describing, EG uses the envelope settings from the ENVELOPE section. If your VCA switch is set to EG and it still behaves like that, contact Moog.

Thanks for your response. After watching your video and a couple of others I did try the VCA switch as you suggested and it did fix the problem. Now I could have sworn I did try that earlier, but maybe not! So next time I will try having the VCA switch 'on' before I plug the Moog in, which will replicate the conditions, just to make sure it does not somehow get stuck if already activated when the unit first powers on. Probably not, but just to be certain. If no issues, then that solves that. Thanks again for your good video and response.

@@circkus nice.. I really appreciate your time. Sounds really nice.. the pyramid and octo and the "seq" are a few others in the running... Then again I want to make sure I can get the unique utility from individual synths, initially i felt like "do I have to setup each synth entirely before I can move to midi controller? " then I was getting more into it and thinking ok..I can control more individual parameters with cc settings etc in midi I would guess? @@ambidex the arturia beatstep pro and keystep pro are what I'm referencing. I like them but I wanted more channels etc. I ended up getting a nerdseq and an akai force later on which I can feed clock into the nerdseq from, I'm still considering the slmk3 also or something. I'm basically running external synths and eurorack and I ended up going with the force to sorta tie everything together with a 1010 bluebox for a mixer for all the synths/rack and straight recording wav files of whatevers playing. Trying to kinda use each synth like a band member. But using the computer is just constant bullshit/problems so I've been going with hardware, it usually just works and if it dosen't it's because you missed a step somewhere or a setting/ channel number. Also honestly I've found alot of each synths own keys or pads if it has them, tends to fit it's synthesis and sounds better than something else played to it through midi, like the microfreak with the touch keybed for example.. or even just the distance the button/ key presses down compared to the one on the synth itself so if I'm playing an external synth from the force for example I end up needing to either make sure velocity settings etc are all right so I can get same sound or I try to use the keys that are on whatever synth to record their part when possible to get the actual sound of THAT synth.

I hope Novation releases another juicy firmware update for the SL MkIII soon. There are quite a few basic features the keyboard could do with to really enhance its usability. E.g. a per-part indicator (in the displays) showing which parts have arpeggiators running. Another easy feature would be to halt all arps when the STOP button is pressed. Allowing the sliders to send out SysEx MIDI messages would also open up many new use cases. Yet another wish list of mine is to be able to use the sliders as volume controls for the respective parts (I understand this would be mutually exclusive with current behaviour; the two modes should be selectable). The sub-step editing is weird (6 sub-steps; why not 8.. would be more musically logical, no?)

Thank you so much. I spent 40 minutes before I realized mine was a different model. Newer 2020 models need a different wiring diagram. Perhaps I someone listed the actual names of what goes where, instead of “4th plug down goes ___”?

Hi, thanks for that cool video. Do you know how to save the currently set CC values in a session? When I use the Knobs and Faders to control external synths it works just fine, but it doesn't save the CC values when saving a session. So when I load a previously saved session, all CCs (inclusing program change) are set back to the template initial values and I have to set them manually again. This is a major drawback for me, making it almost impossible to work efficiently with the SL mk3. I am using Firmware version 1.4

Unless you specifically save the CC values to motion control, they're not in the session. If that's what you want to do, I would suggest going to the first note in the first pattern for each instrument and saving the CC values. Record arm the pattern by pressing record, hold down the note, and move the encoder that adjusts the cc you want to save, get it to the right value and let go. Personally, I just take copious notes on all of my program values and adjustments. Some of my synths are slow to change programs and I think it might make it stutter. The microkorg for example is very slow. If all of my instruments were nice and snappy like my bass station 2, I might be more inclined to save program values in the SL.

@@circkus Thank you very much, this workaround does it. I had contacted Novation and they told me that apparently there is no plan to add a save by session for CCs in the next firmware. Kinda weird though, as all controllers I know (DAWs, Akai Force and others) save CCs in a project/session without the need to record them.
