I am from Cleveland and always loved East Liverpool, and all the other river towns, I think it and the other towns are in the most beautiful area on the Ohio River. I collect glass and pottery and was devastated to hear Hall China closed. Try to save some of those beautiful brick buildings, it seems Cleveland went on a spree to tear down everything. Cleveland never valued any of its historic architecture, they want to make everything new and shiny.

Where to begin? We remember this area, long before it was a CVNRA or CVNP. Back in the 60s and 70s it was still very beautiful and quaint with families living all around, a rolling mill (which the park service dismantled and destroyed the mill) and various homes and small farms, some worst for the wear, some still nicely maintained. I am glad they interviewed some of the older folks in this documentary who could share first hand stories of living on their family farms. It is probably good overall, that Congressman Seiberling worked hard to save and protect this land from future development, if he had not worked to do so it is guaranteed that this area would have been overrun and developed for housing and gated communities, primarily for the wealthy. It is sad that this national park has not erected a small statue and plaque to this Congressman, who had great foresight. When the feds first came in they did a lot of great restorations, and they cleand up toxic waste sites (like the Krejci Dump super fund site), as well as try to capture the historic flavor of the region. Back in the 80s there was a push for community support and involvement. Happy Days Visitor Center had regular educational and music programs, and there were groups encouraged to affiliate with the park such as monthly writers and poets group. They even had an annual National Folk Festival with music and cowboy poets, it was a big deal. I also remember the park hosting an old world circus and native American festivals. All of that is gone now that they no longer need community support. Once the region gained National Park Status, all that changed. They are not very interested in 'average' Joe Cittizen support or input. The poets group was moved, then eliminated all together and Happy Days Visitor Center is shut down and no longer open to the public. The Superintendants have become very jaded and closed off. The former public picnic areas on Hines Hill Road, while still public are now called the Conservancy for CVNP and promoted strictly for wedding venues, corporate functions like invitation only Clam Bakes for big money park donors. The public picnic area has been quietly removed, grass no longer mowed, to discourage park visitors from roaming the grounds (which were donated to the PUBLIC). It is basically the developers and politicians and big money shakers and movers hobnobbing with the Park Admin. Outsiders need not apply. There is Camp Manatoc and Camp Butler, enclosed inside the National Park, both probably in disrepair. There was a beautiful working Beaver Pond as well as regular trenching done of the Canal. Now parts of the Canal, especially towards Cleveland suburbs in the North seem neglected. The Wilson Feedmill should be supported, but instead seems to be on their own and neglected by the park service. There is the Youth Hostel and Educational facilities, none of which are promoted. There is generally an air of: we needed the public support years ago, but we are past that now. Without meaningful connections to the public, this National Park will be setting itself up for encroachments and outside development. It sure appears that way, to anyone with half a brain, when you consider all the closeness between the big money donors and private developers and the park administrators. Rarely do we ever, ever see a national park ranger, or even a cruiser driving around. Much of the area has speed limits of 35, 40 & 45 mph rather than 25 or 30 mph which would make better sense for park visitors who want to see the scenic beauty but perhaps cannot walk the trails. Drivers in a hurry due to the high speed limits often tailgate other drivers. A few beautiful historic home sites owned by the Park (Riverview Road, near Brecksville) were leased out to tenant occupants, under the guise of a heritage farming program. Most today (2024) are just providing cheap rents to buddies and are in disrepair. The national park needs to invest some tax money into creating and industrail era museum, bring the rolling mill from Jaite back, as well as models and history of the paper bag factory, where hundreds of Polish families (and kids) worked at the turn of the century, not far from the present day Boston Mills Ski resort. The old white church building located at the corner of Hines and Boston was originally a Polish School house for the children, long before it became a church. The overgrown field with the federal style red brick century house and pond off Riverview Rd where the Rangers dispatcher is located, was once a beautiful working Dairy Farm that produced cheese for market. Perhaps the park could restore it for visitors and set up a program in conjunction with 4H? Do you really need a dispatcher station taking up a historic federal style building and once working farm? There is also a tiny cemetery located just near the historic Happy Days visitor Center, it is the resting place of some of the Irish families that lived in the valley and worked on the building of the canal, it would be and ideal location to create a heritage museum dedicate to their contributions and piece of history. Finally, the park needs to stop hiding and neglecting the heritage of native Americans in the valley. Yes, we understand that they want to protect and keep quiet about the many burial mounds, but that is what you have park security for. The rich native history needs to be acknowledged, and a museum to their life and contributions should also be considered. One suitable location might be where the former Cleveland Coliseum building was located. That building was leveled and demolished, and the land was sold by owners Milleti to the National Park Service, during the Bush era, its an open field of federal land and owned by the CVNP. The Bush era was also when the conveniently located Veterans Hospital Campus (located on Brecksville Rd) was sold to private developers (to build the Valor Acres housing and retail complex) rather than slightly upgrade the hospital facilities which were very centrally located for Veterans and their families both in Akron and Cleveland. There was even a public bus service to that hospital. Now, families with loved ones in a VA hospital must negotiate the drive to the University Circle area, not convenient for those not from that area. There is something hauntingly beautiful about the Valley and there is nothing quite like it anywhere else, but the National Park has lost touch with the Wildlife, the Community and with the Park Visitors & People. Do Better!!!! It truly is a different world. PS dont underestimate what it is that the "kids" in the park will be able to see when they are grown. Dont diminish them and write them off as never will see the Rockies, or Yosemite Park or Yellowstone. Very telling statement and very sad and limiting.

More Ohio people spend their time in West Virginia than they do their own state. They come over for cigarettes and lottery tickets and fast food and groceries when you can shop and give money back to your own state and work in your own state, it gives it money to progress. It seems like they don't care about that. A lot of Ohio people also come across the border to live for free because they rent or say they have a business in Ohio. Meanwhile, they live in West Virginia and don't have to pay school tax property tax license registration because they keep their Ohio plates. East Liverpool could be a great place again but I think people just don't care enough especially when they can go everywhere else and do.

I love Akron, but I do remember the racial tension preceding the riots. At the time I was in 9th grade at Goodyear Jr High. The bulk of my friends were African American. My family were poor white folks and while we did not experience the injustices of people of color, I totally understood their plight. To this day I have tried to find any information about my former classmates. I truly want to know how theirs lives turned out. I will remember and love them always.❤️

I have lived all over the world and I’ll tell you, East Liverpool is the only place I’ve called HOME. So much so, we moved back. Is it sad? Absolutely. Are there drug problems? YES. Is it our responsibility to handle that? HELL YES! Just like you don’t want that in your house, don’t allow it in OUR town. Yes we have a police force, but who knows what’s happening in your neighborhood better than you? If you see something, say something. It will take EVERYONE to help turn this around, but it can be done!

One of the most bewitching aspects of Mr Stankard's paperweights is that they are meant to be seen in motion - turning so that the intricate depth from every angle may be savored. One dives, floats, trips & immerses through one of his pieces. Mesmerizing.

I moved away from Stark County to Oklahoma City in 2013. In recent years, I've actually begun to miss it. I do like how there is new economic development happening in Stark County. It actually began before I moved. I just wish it would reach a point where people stop leaving, or actually begin moving in. I know I'm contemplating moving back.
