Thank you for this very helpful information. I’m wondering if it is possible to use your own image as the shape for the frame instead of creating a shape and then adding an image? What I am ultimately trying to accomplish is to create a drag and drop template for various styles and designs of athletic headbands and other accessories that we design and offer to the community sports teams and school districts. Given that there are different styles (tie back and fitted) we have pictures of these items blank but would like to create a template so that the customers can drag a drop the different colors and designs of the product onto a template and it would snap into place to give them a more realistic view of the item. 8:32

Thank you for watching, and taking the time to comment! Just to clarify my understanding of your question, are the blanks within an overall image, in other words, they're sitting within a background but are blank so someone could add their design? If that is the case, turning them in to a picture frame wouldn't be the way to go because it would turn the entire image in to a picture frame, including all of the space around the object. Even if it was an isolated png, and padding around the object would be included in the frame. You're better off isolating that individual item, within the image, and creating a mask around that layer, so that when they drop and drag anything on top of it, it confines it to that individual object. For that, Photo would be a better option, or, using StudioLink, within Publisher, to jump in to Photo to use selection tools (you would need to have Photo on your system to do this). I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any questions about the above. Thank you again for watching!

This is a great tutorial, Tracey! I'm running into a problems though that you didn't cover. When I set my Body level 2 to start at a certain number - 1, 29, etc. - it changes all the L2 cells to start at that number!
@Tracey-CreatorCollage
@Tracey-CreatorCollage Ай бұрын
Thank you for watching, Linda! Thank you, as well for the lovely compliment, I appreciate it! Are you deselecting all of the L2 numbers that you don't want to change before changing the number using the "Start Numbering At" field in the Paragraph Panel? For example, if the trailing numbers at the end of the month (in other words the dates from the upcoming month) are correct and you don't need to change them, are you deselecting them before you change the starting number in the Paragraph panel? If not, that's going to change everything. At about 24:55 on the timeline I deselect the last day in January before I change the first three leading days to the 29-31. If I'm misunderstanding, and it's actually changing everything to the same number, can you please let me know the exact steps you're taking to change the number? As long as you use "Start Numbering At" in the Paragraph panel, it shouldn't give you the same number in each cell. Thank you again!

Thanks for the quick response, Tracey! Yep, I've deselected all the ones I don't want to change, but it's not only changing both the beginning and end dates, but it's changing the ones in other tables too! 😕 Everything that's L2 changes to the new starting number.

I did. The whole table as L1 to begin with then selecting the bits that sound be L2 (beginning and end of month separately) and changing the setting for those. It's very weird.

@@lindarobshaw hmmmm. Go to the Text Styles panel, click on the burger menu on the L2 style and choose Edit the style. Make sure that Level in the Bullets & Numbering is actually showing Level 2 and not one. If it's showing No Change or something like that, just set it to Level 2 and resave. See if that helps!

Thank you Amy! I'm glad you enjoyed it! I don't have one specifically about that but it wouldn't be that much different than creating a frame from a shape. If you're trying to create a single word frame (in that the entire word is a single frame) you would just need to add a raster fill to the word and export it as a PDF, just like the other frames. Hope this helps! (ps- the one thing it doesn't seem to want to do is create individual frames from a single word. In other words, if you convert your word to curves so it breaks all the letters out individually. Even if you add a separate bitmap to each shape, for some reason, Canva breaks the first letter out, and fuses everything else together. Not sure why)

Hi, Tracey. I had some problems with vector flood tool and bitmaps (it still crashes in Windows with stock photos), but I finally have it. As I do not work in Canva, I wondered if it was possible to use this frame the same way in Designer as you use it in Canva.. First I managed to do it in Photo and then in Designer too, but with gradient tool set to bitmap. I'm still confused about these filling tools. But I have a question about the thumbnail background. In Photo if the background is transparent, it is visible, but the same curve in Designer on dark mode is on very dark background, not well visible and you have it on light grey. Is there any setting for it or it's just Mac option? Another question: in Designer is there equivalent of Fill Layer from Photo or you have to draw a shape and fill it if you hadn't set background colour when creating a new document?
@Tracey-CreatorCollage
@Tracey-CreatorCollage Ай бұрын
Hi Joan! Thanks so much for watching! I was going to include info on using this in Designer if you didn't have Canva but didn't want to add too much to the tutorial. I have another one coming out that will go in to that. In the meantime, in Designer, whether it's for a shape, or your background, you can use the Gradient tool to add an image to a shape but you need to have a shape in place first. The default of the Gradient tool will always be Solid but if you use the drop down in the contextual menu and choose Bitmap, it will take you outside of Designer so that you can add an image. But yes, you do need to have a shape in place first in order to do that. There isn't a Fill Layer from Photo option like there is in Photo. I'm confused by the question about the thumbnail background. Do you mean the thumbnail in the layer studio? If so, you can lighten it by going to the burger menu at the top of the layer panel and under Thumbnail Background, choosing your setting. I don't think this is just in a Mac. If I'm misunderstanding any of your questions, please let me know! Thank you again for watching!

Hi George! There's usually more than one way to get to the result you're looking for so I think it's great that you tried a different approach! I think it all comes down to what you want your end result to look like, and whether you need to maintain the original shape. In my case, I wasn't worried about approaching it destructively (as the tutorial it was about the balanced dash pattern rather than the overall design :)) but if you want to maintain the ability to edit your shape your approach is great! Hi Tracey! Thank you so much for the tutorial and for explaining how to create patterns in Affinity on iPad! I have a question regarding pattern fills. Is there a way to fill a canvas with a pattern, particularly when the canvas has custom dimensions that aren't square? For example, if I'm working with a specific template with set width and height for print on demand sites, can I create a canvas in Affinity and then fill it entirely with a pattern I've designed without rasterazing it or potentially losing the vector quality? I appreciate any guidance you can provide!
@Tracey-CreatorCollage
@Tracey-CreatorCollage 2 ай бұрын
Hi Yuliya! Thank you very much for watching, and taking the time to comment. I appreciate it! On the pattern fills, they are always going to be bitmap fills, if you use the Gradient tool or Vector Flood Fill. If you have a specific canvas size you want to create, and you want it to be in vector format, I would recommend creating your canvas and creating your initial motif in a size that will easily divide in to that canvas, then build it from there. The overall process of tiling would be the same, you would just do the math ahead of time to determine what you would need your motif to be to make it easy to tile it. You could potentially duplicate your original artboard, resize it and retile what you already created but you would need to be careful that it's truly seamless once you're done. To me, without knowing what sorts of dimensions you're working with, starting fresh, with the necessary dimensions in mind, is a better option unless the resized version can easily accommodate your original motif. I hope that makes sense. Now, if you're working with Printify as your print on demand, they actually accept vector files and have a tiling option in their editor. They're the only ones I'm aware of who accept SVG files. I use them myself, and typically just load my original square format file. In that case, I don't need to create a separate file because it's going in as a vector. I just threw a lot of info at you so please let me know if you need clarification on anything!

Hi there! Yes, there is a difference between a vector and a pixel, correct, however this brush, while not infinitely scalable, is a "vector" because it can be manipulated with nodes. However, as I believe I mention in the video, it's created with a pixel nozzle so you can't scale it infinitely. None of Designer's "vector" brushes (which they call vector brushes) are flat, infinitely scalable brushes, as the majority are created with pixel nozzles, however they are created with vector tools and manipulatable with nodes. I hope that helps explain why it's named this! 🙂 Thank you so much for the comment!

@Tracey-CreatorCollage
@Tracey-CreatorCollage 2 ай бұрын
Hi Amy! Sorry about that! (I shouldn't answer first thing in the morning :)) Yes, you can. You would need to create another layer that you add a raster to; that becomes the frame. What I would recommend is creating a vector shape layer (with the shapes, pen tool, whatever you want) then, with the Gradient tool, add a bitmap directly to it (you can do this with the Stock Studio, or pull something in externally). This can sit between layers, or above, just keep in mind, in Canva, if it can't find the drop zone for the frame, you might have to move whatever is above it out of the way to use it, then put it back. The one thing I will note, for some reason Canva doesn't like anything with perfect corners, the frame won't work. So, if you create something square in Serif, and intend for that to be the Canva frame, round up the corners, using the corner tool, slightly. It doesn't have to be anything noticeable, .5 pixels is fine. Hopefully, this makes sense. If it would help, I can also put a quick tutorial together showing something similar that would apply to these Polaroids as well.

Thank you so much for watching and commenting. I'm so happy to hear you ended up with an illustration you like! :) I'm sorry, I should have mentioned there is no difference between the two, in that they both do the same thing. The reason they call it "Bake Appearance," when it comes to the Corner Tool (as well as the Contour tool) is because you're creating the curve and then just "baking in" the shape you created to set it. "Convert to Curves," doesn't necessarily have to come after you have made a change to the shape, but, ultimately, both create nodes :) Thank you again for watching!
