35mm f1.4 distagon is quite pricey I got it in F mount and seems similarly prices in C/Y mount. Very nice lens tho

What monitor is this? Is that hooked up for live monitoring or are you playing that back after
@NickHouchinАй бұрын
That was legitimately a 27" computer monitor. I had a Teradek Bolt transmitter on the camera, and a receiver connected to the monitor via HDMI in this case. The Bolt allows you to remotely monitor with 0.1ms of latency at upto 750 feet line of sight. You need this level of latency for wirelessly pulling focus. For director of client viewing, lower end transmitters are totally fine.

what camera did you use these on? The shots are amazing
@NickHouchin3 ай бұрын
Thanks! These are a combination of URSA Mini Pro 4.6k G1 and G2, A variety of Sony cameras, both mirrorless and cine line, and maybe a few RED shots in there as well. Just as a little reminder, the camera really shouldn't matter. What's in the frame, the lighting, and the glass are way way more important. Hope that helps!

Great stuff Nick. What's your director's monitor set up? Does the raw footage in camera reflects the same color when transmitted to the monitor using the REC709 lut?
@NickHouchin4 ай бұрын
In this video you're seeing a literal 27" computer monitor sitting on the cart. The one the 1st AC is pulling focus off is the usual one we carry around. It's a Small HD 702 Bright monitor (I've had it for years). Signal gets from the camera to the monitor via a Teredek Bolt 750 LT. If you're going to be pulling focus off it, you need the zero latency of the Teredek, if you're just going to be viewing, any wireless system will do. Both of those are housed in the Wooden Camera Director's Cage v3, and powered with a gold mount battery. There are several options for viewing LUTs. We could send a LUT loaded into the camera out the SDI to the wireless transmitter, or just a LOG image. The SmallHD can also house LUTs to cycle through that can be sent out it's HDMI or SDI out. Let me know if you have any more questions!

Great video! I am currently building my own set. How close together did you get your serial numbers from lens to lens? I have three lens, #1: 790xxx, #2: 746xxx and #3: 733xxx. Are all of those too far apart from each other?
@NickHouchin4 ай бұрын
I'm guessing you're totally fine. Mine are 739xxx, 725xxx, 738xxx, and 693xxx (that's the 28mm) - you can use the footage here to judge if those are too far away for you. These are vintage so they aren't going to perfectly match anyways - I've noticed the tint/ca varies depending on if I'm wide open or stopped down, and is different from lens to lens. Nothing I haven't been able to correct in post super quickly though.

One of the best bts video I watched. It shows the reality, not an ideal situation. Adding a bit more info on ISO, aperture, focal lenght choices would have been ideal. But it's a detail: I really liked it. Thank you Nick. Cheers from India

Is the sample footage, narrative and on the beach with the dog, shot with the Ursa Mini G2?

Most of the narrative stuff is on the URSA Mini Pro, some on the G1, some on the G2. The beach footage was on the original Pocket 6k.

Not that I needed this now, but it sure was nice to see that comprehensive footage breakdown by lens. Super awesome at .25 speed by the way. These were my first set, lo those many years ago. Spurred on by the Reduser Contax Survival Guide in 2013. I started with the 50 1.4. It was so good I went 18/28/35/85/100/35-70. I sent all the lenses to Duclos to have them checked out and cine-modded. Now they can really shine on my new BMCC6k FF. That 21mm was always expensive, so never on my list, same with the 28/f2 Hollywood. Thanks for this.

Thanks, i bought two Contax lenses recently, the 85mm f/1.4 & the 50mm f/1.4 on my Nikon Z mirrorless for stills. I had diffucult time to find how other people bought the cap for the lenses and now I know this is SIMMOD. I already bought the Contax metal caps from Japan, or else, I would order from SIMMOD. Thanks for the information anyway, I am looking at the 28mm f/2 (Hollywood).

I was wondering if you ever tried the ZE lenses ? I have the BMPCC 6k G2 with 21mm f2.8 ZE, 28mm f2 ZE, 35mm f2 ZE, and 50mm f1.4 ZE. I think that most of them are the same as Contax, but the coating has changed. It would great to get some feedback if it is worth it investing in Contax if I already have a set of ZE. Input from others with experience would be nice. Thanks a lot

If you don't mind sharing, what was your budget like?
@NickHouchin9 ай бұрын
Actual budget vs what the budget could/should/would have been are massively different on this project. We didn't have to rent any gear since my production company provided it. We called in favors from the filmmaking homies - we've been working on each other's stuff for years. In the end we paid the actors, the location, crafty and meals, 3 Airbnb's for the actors, hard drive space, and a few costume and production design odds and ends. The out of pocket amount was between $1-2k. This is how we've "hacked" making stuff for a lot less than it should cost over the years.
@perfektionstudios9 ай бұрын
Wow that's amazing. Well, great job as producer. I know that was a hell of a feat. I ran into a similar situation with actors not showing at the last minute and that drove me crazy and I had no one else to call.@@NickHouchin
