You are not going to get the 120 kwh charging speeds at 46%. If you go below 20% you might get the full speed your car supports.

If you heat your battery up, using the software, it will charge faster. It depends on what model you have if you can do that. Otherwise, if you move to Sport Mode for 4 or 5 miles before going to the charger it will heat your battery up, and speed up charging.

I'm in the opposite situation. I had a level 2 installed before I got my Ioniq 6 and went from charging at home 100% with my old prius to trying to charge as often on DC fast chargers. Can't beat free. If you can install a home charger after 2 years I would. I use a wallbox pulsar plus still since it delivers the max what the car can take at level 2.

6:35 - "this is disappointing" - well it certainly was, and you were 100% correct at 11:45 when you say it needed to warm up the battery. The battery needs to be at around 75ºF / 24ºC to optimize charging speed, and it took that amount of time for the current to 'toast' your battery. This is why battery pre-conditioning in the IONIQ 5 is the best thing since sliced bread. This is for people that are thinking of getting an IONIQ / EV6 / Genesis EV (because they all use the same system). First off, your car needs to be above 20% state of charge or the IONIQ says, "it's too low for me to start throwing heaters on, I'm saving the battery's lifespan, no use of the battery preconditioning for you!" But if you're above 20% then you're good to go. People recommend starting things thirty minutes before you want to get to the charger, so first thing is to route the vehicle to the charger. You MUST use the onboard navigation system, as that talks to the battery management system. And you MUST choose the charger location by selecting the charger as a Point Of Interest (POI). Go to Navigation Menu → POI Categories → EV Charging Stations and select the charger you want to use → Start Guidance. If you're less than 30 minutes away, the battery management system will start heating the battery cells but it may not be at optimal temperature when you arrive if it's close to / below freezing outside (so if you know the charger is 18 minutes drive away, and you're well above 20% state of charge, start the onboard map navigation 12 minutes before you set off and it'll be perfect). If it's a milder day, as it was for you, you may only need to pre-condition for 10 minutes. It's like heating a bathroom with a plug-in heater - it gets the room warmer on days that it's not so chilly outside. kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6a8iK2labdgmqc has a great video from The Ioniq Guy on how to start preconditioning for the IONIQ 5, and how to tell it's happening. The guy at Plug & Play EV tried it out during December '22 in an older 2022 model, when it was 40ºF / 4ºC outside. Before pre-conditioning, he was also getting under a disappointing 50kW. After pre-conditioning for a short drive, plugging in gave him 196kW or power, even at a high battery state of charge (when the car starts to slow the charge speed down for safety reasons anyway). That video is at kzbin.info/www/bejne/m4DIeoyfqtxondk Just one nit-pick: the IONIQ 5 can NOT charge at up to 350kW. The charger can output that, but you'd need to be in something like a $100,000+ Lotus Eletre to be able to pull it all. The IONIQ 5 (and other cars built on the E-GMP platform) can pull approximately 800 Volts at 300 Amps. Multiply them together, you get 240,000 Watts (240 kiloWatts), but it will only do that when it's safe to pull that rate of power - when you have a battery that's less than 40% full. So if a charger ever DOES say your IONIQ 5 is pulling all 350kW, run. Run very fast directly away from the charger. It's a shame you haven't done extra videos. You could probably do one showing how slow it was without pre-conditioning (just video from this one), and on another 50ºF / 10ºC day make the battery nice and toasty beforehand (at a low state of charge) and show how it can rip above 200kW.

1:49 - This is really helpful. Bookmarked! Just got my Ioniq 6, which comes with the free charging up to 30min. Does that free charging benefit automatically engage when you swipe? Or do I have to hit another secret button on the app? And I wasn't aware there are two pumps per station. 👍

This is helpful, and I'll try to use this guidance when charging my new Ioniq 5 on a roadtrip. I have only charged twice from EA stations, but in those instances I had to tap my phone with the EA app over a spot under the tiny screen. Weird. I do think, nonetheless, that the process could be much easier, just plug-and-play. 3rd party DCFC providers need to simply and coordinate better.

Everytime a battery is charged, it loses a tiny bit of its capacity. A DC fast charger causes that battery to lose more capacity. To make your EV battery pack to last as long as possible always charge at home using the slow charger that came with the car. !

Depends. On ¢ per kWh rate (29¢, 43¢, 64¢, etc) or sometimes they charge so many ¢ per minute. At 43¢ per kWh & U put in 50kWh (65% of Ioniq 5 77kWh 🔋 pack aka ⚡ from 20% to 85% aka ~ 220 mi of range), you're looking at $21.50 OR... Free! Yes, buy or lease a new Hyundai & get 2-3 yrs FREE ⚡ on Electrify America locations! 🤯

I notice none of the charging stations have overhead covers to keep you from getting rained on or snowed on - I guess you have to sit in your car while charging - I just wonder in a snowy climate will they keep the chargers plowed out so you can get to the chargers?

Not necessarily, auto can act similarly to level 1 or 2 depending which deceleration you select in the auto settings. I enjoy driving with auto without traffic as the car can coast. In heavy traffic, I prefer level 3 or i-Pedal.

A lot of people get lied to by the UP TO charging speeds without realizing its only in the perfect conditions ie battery can't be too cold or too hot or can't be too full or other stalls must be empty, with the Level3 charger working perfectly, etc... I think its still crazy to buy an EV without home charging option.

Plus: as of March 2024, there isn't a single production passenger EV on the road for under $100,000 take-home that can take the full 350kW that these chargers can deliver (1,000 Volts x 350 Amps = 350,000 Watts / 350 kiloWatts / 350kW) ... the Porsche Taycan Plus can top out at around 320kW as it can take just over 900 Volts at 350 Amps, and the brand new Lotus Emeya is said to be able to hit the 350kW, but you're paying premium money for sports car engineering. Those DC fast chargers are future-proofed. Maybe in 5-10 years the $50,000 level EVs will be able to pull the full amount, but the technology's not quite there yet.
