PM Keir Starmer quotes "years of underfunding", then one hears about Thurrock Council investing with 100's (millions) of taxpayer's money. The council (as all councils) should be more risk averse in decision making, when making investments and really, they should not be investing as it is not their money but taxpayers. Where is due diligence and minimum risk strategy, before making that final decision ? From this perspective it would appear that most "councils" are not fit for "investment" at all, but rather should focus on the basics; budgeting and leaving any excess capital in savings account with a basic rate of return. It is very easy to blame the "past", but better to have good financial management as a foundation now, then going forward to have a good relationship with financial matters then what has been happening. The PM also mentions about a "hole" (ref: £22 billion), yet that can be halved straightaway by: 1) Ukraine aid (3 billion) 2) Foreign aid (8 billion) which equates to £11 billion. It appears though that as with most political decisions, it's not their money but "other people's money".
