Anyone know if this is George Russell the jazz composer and who the other musicians were?
@Abic__
@Abic__ 2 ай бұрын
I honestly have no idea! There's very little information about the MGM releases by Russell and I haven't found any concrete details regarding if it's the same pianist behind the Lydian-Chromatic concept. Russell has an extremely distinctive approach to improvisation that is very easily identifiable, but there aren't any improvisatory sections in these works, so trying to figure out if he's the same pianist based on these recordings alone is difficult. As for the other musicians, there aren't any credits listed on this release, unfortunately.

@@Abic__ Thanks. I suspect it's the same George Russell since both he and Wilder were somewhat self-taught musical outsiders. Wilder was an unusual person to put it mildly, perhaps not quite as much as another self-taught American composer with his own harmonic system, Harry Partch. Wilder's and Partch's autobiographies are fascinating reading if you can get your hands on them.

@@Abic__ Thanks so much. I’m making do with the 2006 CD of the 1972 session(eBay). I spent an inordinate number of hours hunting for vinyl as a young teenager. It’ll be nostalgic fun doing that again. Will also get the later big band sessions of the same. Thanks again.

This guy has phenomenal technique. Shocked I've never come across the name before. Another guy i like is Renaud Garcia-Fons - also impeccable intonation and technique but a virtouso when it comes to improvising as well

Thanks a lot for showing us this gem of Trumpet History! You don't have to like the style. But on the first tune, Marvin Peterson shows some phenomenal expressive but still historically informed Trumpet playing. Besides and not lesser than that there's some phenomenal music making going on in the band! On the second tune, the expressionist approach doesn't seem to catch on that well.

There's another fantastic collection of his octet compositions titled "Music for Lost Souls & Wounded Birds," they're much earlier recordings from the shellac era, so the fidelity isn't quite as good as this one, but the music certainly shines through still. There's an upload of the full compilation on someone else's channel, if you're interested; I believe it's the most extensive collection of recordings of his octets that currently exists. These works should be way better known and more frequently preformed!
