Potentially silly question - I can see no rule preventing a beetle (or mosquito mimicking a beetle) from sitting on top of a queen bee. Can a queen still be considered surrounded if it has another piece on top and is thus not visible?
@boardgaimz4 сағат бұрын
It still counts as surrounded if a beetle is on top of it. Just the beetle can pin it in place from moving , making a queen easier to surround :)

@boardgaimzАй бұрын
@@maxisenberg9093 the general consensus for new players is that being the attacker seems easier, though some people who play a lot would argue it’s a matter of practice. There are some great asymmetrical games - Root for example is a good one, which is relatively balanced and as it can have a higher player count the slightly ‘better’ factions can be kept in check by other players working together to keep on top of them.

CORRECTION: When a player decides to take a card (and any tokens on it), play DOES NOT pass to the left. The same player draws a new card and again has the option of taking that card or leaving a token on it. Play only passes to the left AFTER a card is passed by leaving a token on it.

So why do you remove 3 cards in a 2 player game? And why face-up?
@boardgaimz4 ай бұрын
As far as we’re aware it’s to help you be able to make a little bit more of an informed decision from the start, by knowing a few of the cards that are out of play / reduce the ‘luck factor’ a tad. It helps add a bit of variation to each round, since the game is generally a bit more varied with a higher player count.

This was the best tutorial I've seen so far, so thank you! I do have some questions though, and I hope you can answer these. 1. Other tutorials point out that the refuge spaces can be used to capture pieces, since pieces can't occupy those spaces. So if a defender piece is placed next to a refuge space and an attacker piece is place next to that defender piece, it will count as captured as though the refuge space is also an attacker piece. Is that correct? 2. You're saying that the king can also be used to capture enemy pieces, but I've also encountered tutorials claiming that the king can't be used that way. Having played the game a few times now I feel that the king shouldn't have that capability. Is this a clear rule for the king? Or are the rules for this based on variants? 3. Once the king has left its starting position it can't move back to that central tile, is that correct? Thanks again for sharing this great tutorial!
@boardgaimz4 ай бұрын
Thanks so much! To be honest, it appears there’s still debate as to how the original was actually played, and there are lots of different variants to the rules out there. These rules are from the Scottish Museum set. 1. Yep you can capture them against the corner refuge squares - think we mention that one :) 2. These rules state the king can capture, but not when it’s on the centre. There are a few variations out there though, so we’d advise trying them and seeing what feels the most balanced :) In our opinion, it seems a bit easier being the king with these rules, so adding rules such as being able to capture the king against a board edge, or the king not being able to capture helps to balance it a tad, atleast at the start. Though maybe it’s just we haven’t mastered the attacking team yet :)

@@boardgaimz and what about their third question? May the King return to the throne after escaping it?
@boardgaimz3 ай бұрын
@@georgeg7181 Most variants seem to agree that only the King can ever occupy the centre and corner squares (otherwise you could sit your pieces on the corners and he could never escape. Some variants play that he can’t go back on it once moving off the central square, some do. Other pieces can move through the central square, but not sit on it. It’s usually agreed upon that the king can be captured against the central square too. If you think of the central square as the ‘castle’ or ‘throne’ and him being pinned up against it.
