@@usuallyfixingtinkering Yes. And its pretty sophisticated. It contains the vin code of the car, calibration numbers etc. Basically you cant fit this module on two different Aston models even if the hardware (the board, the actual module is the same). I have the original diagnostic AMDS system that flashes the modules of the car, but even after flashing with amds (the most advanced tool for this cars) the vin nr in the pektron module remains original and there is some soft (can communication protocols) that cant be reflashed. Basically I have to bench it, clone the module and force bench flash the other module to bypass the soft issue. Complicated 😬

I have a question, I have the 1.1 engine and I noticed that it leaked oil from the spark plugs, so I guess it needs replacing the piston rings. Do you think it's a good idea to do it by myself or it's better to take to the mechanic?

Whatever you do, fit brand new lifters, and don't skip the run in procedure on them. keep it at 2000 rpm for the first 20 minutes of runtime and don't let it idle until that time's passed. otherwise you'll be replacing them again in no time!

@usuallyfixingtinkering there is a small caged external sensor on the bottom of the radiator, measures airflow temp. Trick with old 1600 focus, when the radiator fan won't switch on, is to temporarily unplug sensor betwwen spark plugs. ECU goes to default, and switches fan to continuous. Useful for hot weather. Car has had new fan unit with radiator sensor. Still doesn't switch on.

Hey Andrew, I'm in a very big pinch with my mk1 focus and in desperate need of advice please. My radiator started leaking a while ago, but I'm tight on money. I'm just filling it with antifreeze every time it loses some, so I won't have any problem with the temperature, although it's not very cold where i live. However, i made the mistake ( due to a very big hurry) and went 160-170 km/h on the highway for about 30 minutes i believe, after that the car seems to be losing a much bigger quantity of antifreeze. My AC compressor also leaks oil, and my dilemma is this: since i have the oem radiator, the Ac radiator and the water radiator are merged, so I'm gonna have to change them both and i can't change them separately so i could do everything step by step and save some money. If i change both radiators, then I'm gonna have to also change the compressor so i don't lose money by changing it in the future along with another AC radiator. Can i just change the radiators and instead of changing the compressor, replace it's o rings and see if this fixes the problem? Or do i have to change the whole unit? It seems to be working well and when on idle, it cools the space, only problem is it's losing antifreeze and oil. Sorry for this long message, but i really don't know what to do and where to begin and I'm desperate...
@usuallyfixingtinkering
@usuallyfixingtinkering 21 күн бұрын
I'll keep this brief, concentrate on the engine side of things thats more important, get that radiator changed because your costing yourself antifreeze in the long-run. That's my advice. Don't worry about the compressor until you have the funds to look at that.
@panospng03
@panospng03 20 күн бұрын
@usuallyfixingtinkering You're right but the car has the oem radiator that has the AC radiator fixed on the water radiator, so I'm gonna have to change both, and if the compressor is filling the system with filings since it's losing oil, then I'm gonna have to change the ac radiator again. That's what i can't get around of.

Always thank you for all of your videos. You have really helped me to learn the way Ford do things. Your engine bay always looks wonderfully clean. Is it ok to ask what you use to clean things up. When I was an apprentice, we used to use carb cleaner and brake cleaner. Sometimes, I should probably not say this, apple cider vinegar. gunk was sometimes handy, on real cars before computers and damm sensors :) was often handy :) What do you recommend? I have a lovely ultra sonic thing, which I use part cleaner. For some reason, when I use it parts come out clean and rusty. May be Im buying a bad additive. If possible, my wife and I would love to join the focus club. Our mk1 , name Silver or full name Silver Girl, was my wife's 1st car after she passed her test and I must keep our girl alive for as long as I can find a little skill, knowledge and parts and learn Ford. Ultrasonic cleaners clean well and can leave rust stains because it's that hard on sone items but nothing that won't clean or be painted over! You must join the Facebook page of the club to join and you will see all the events we have planned at the moment. I don't reveal the events on here as its strictly members only. these are NOS FAE ones which have a great reputation so no issues there. The cost of getting the old valves cleaned up and refaced will be way more than the cost of buying quality new ones. Nice to see you friend. after 10 years I took the car to the scrapyard 🥺 While the engine was still super healthy and did not use any oil or coolant, it eventually broke down. I was not in a hurry that day, I had also warmed up the car nicely before I drove away properly. I drove for 10 minutes in the city nothing wrong at all, but after I started driving on the highway the misery started! I was driving 100km per hour at a constant speed, and out of nowhere the car started to retract and stutter enormously. Check engine lamp also kept blinking. So I first thought a defective spark plug, ignition coil, or injector. Once I got home, I had read the car, and I only had 1 error code (misfire cylinder 3) P0303. So I replaced the spark plugs first, nothing helped. Ignition coil replaced together with the cables, no difference either, as the last injector done, no difference either. So out of desperation I drove to the garage, and there they looked into the cylinders with a telescope, and it turned out that 1 of the tappets is permanently jammed. While I have maintained the car super for 10 years, replaced everything on time, the engine gave up in 1 go. I didn't expect this at all from these Zetec engines from Ford! I gave the car to the scrapyard, and bought an Opel Astra 1.8 2009. And I have to say that I am very, very satisfied with the Astra. 😊😊
@usuallyfixingtinkering
@usuallyfixingtinkering 4 күн бұрын
That is very very weird and I'm sceptical on the garage diagnosis. They are solid tappets and don't jam. There's nothing to jam as it's not hydraulic. I'm glad your happy with your new car anyhow that's the main thing!

Having a look for reference and info, checked your brake parts video as well. If your handbrake is getting sloppy and keeps needing readjustment, time to service and replace your rear drums (everything, get a kit with shoes cylinders drums and bearings, plus cables, hoses or whatever to completely renew the system) if they are still original. My right rear drum has just completely failed. Handbrake was recently getting sloppy again and now the other day I heard a weird scrapping grinding. I took the drum apart and found the cylinder is leaking and one of the shoes has been shredded and been chewed so badly. Awful. A bit annoyed after failing an MOT and they cleaned, didn’t find that they were just knackered. A bit of an inconvenience it has caught up with me sooner than I wanted, but rear drum brakes were on my radar considering age and that they kept failing. Lucky I have caught it and taken action before complete brake failure or even catastrophic failure that could have resulted in a crash. Also question what your garage is doing. Bit annoyed because I was charged for the brake labour that could have gone toward replacement parts. Going to knuckle down with this job as soon as all the parts arrive, hopefully everything goes together nicely.
