I’m so up in the air on what to change mine to in my 1x12. I love my ac30 just want to take the highs. I play a lot of country and country gospel. With a lot of pedals to does the gold do good with pedals. I set mine up that way with a lot of headroom. Just can’t make up my mind lol. Great video

Thanks for watching! I personally chose the Amperian V.S.O.P because to my ears, it worked the best with a greater variety of pedals, while providing wider frequency range than the gold. hope that helps! PS.. if you use guitarknobs10 on imperial's site before the end of Jan you will save 10% off any of their amps. And no we are not getting paid to promote any of the speakers :-)
@aarontiller52688 күн бұрын
@ sounds good to me. I’m down if you are promoting them for you lol. Money saved money saved to me lol. Thank ya tho that helps a lot I check them out for sure. Love the show and the podcast gets me through the day at work….

@@aarontiller5268 I think you will be pleased with the V.S.O.P. to me it had a smoother output than the rest. Glad you dig the show!. We just had John Sanchez of Amperian on and he goes into great detail about the speakers.

It would be great to compare also Fane A30 and Celestion Alnico 100, if possible. Both are 30W speakers. Could you make second episode?
@TheGuitarKnobsPodcast2 ай бұрын
I hope we can do more of these. It takes a village haha! That would be a good comparison. Thanks for the suggestion!

Talking about clean tones, I prefer the Vox (altough it is dark; and I also can "feel" the Fane-quality) but maybe a compromise between Vox and Amperian "colour" would be perfect. I do not like the Avatar. IMHO (Since my youth, my ears have been tuned to the JBL D120F and now to the D123)

The golds always sound "congested"... you think they need breaking in... but they never improve.

This is one of the best speaker demos I’ve seen, thanks for putting this together! The Avatar A50 really sounded fantastic to me in all of the demos and came out on top. The Fane A60 was in a close second.

Were the Fane and Celestion Gold broken in? They sound a little flat to me, as I own both of these speakers. I really liked the Avatar A50 in this demo though. It impressed me the most.
@TheGuitarKnobsPodcast2 ай бұрын
the Fane was brand new. Actually all of them were except for the Celestion Gold, which was well broken in.

What I learned: 1. If you start with Vox + Alnico you'll wind up somewhere tasty. 2. I love P-90s. 3. The Celestion Gold sounds to me like the classic alnico with its strengths and its faults 4. The non-Celestions in this shootout, in one way or another, gave fuller tones that filled or partly filled the gaps alnicos usually don't fill 5. If i was playing a 1 x 12 I'd want one of the non-Celestions but not sure which one. 6. If I'm playing a 2 x 12 and i can pick a different speaker to complement the alnico, i'd pick the Gold (from these choices - actually I do play a 2 x 12 and the alnico in it is a Weber Blue Dog) 7. I gotta try some TV Jones pickups 8. I personally prefer lower watt alnicos - the 80 watt Celestions were my least favorite in every use case

thanks very much for the thoughtful comments! It is pretty remarkable how different they are from ceramic speakers, especially when you are in the live room. Not to mention how different they were from each other.

1:08:10 I’ve discovered that many mass-produced brand new tube amps (especially FMIC brands) are not biased to ideal specs but are instead biased cold. I’’ve heard this was to prolong tube life and delay orvavoid warranty claims. Could it could also be compensation for higher voltages encountered in most homes today?
@TheGuitarKnobsPodcast2 ай бұрын
This is a great question for our amp guru guy Rob!.. I will pass it on to him

59:58 I recommend carrying a Killawatt meter in your gig bag if you’re worried/confused about using a multimeter and are scared you could end up like Booji Boy sticking a fork in a toaster. A Killawatt is only 40 bucks and plugs direct into a wall outlet. It’s also very helpful for measuring actual voltage output from a Variac as a Variac’s calibration can drift and the knob indication may not be the actual,voltage!

55:55 In his first Guitar Player magazine interview in 1978, Ed Van Halen said “I use voltage generators, which can crank my amps up to 130 or 140 volts. Amps sound like nothing else when they are cranked up so high.” In the original issue of GP, this was accompanied by an editor’s note warning people NOT to this as one could risk electrocution and expensive amo damage. Unfortunately when the article was reprinted in the Positively Van Halen GP special issue in late 1984, the warning was gone. Hence the great transformer shortage in 1985, and the premature deaths of numerous guitarists named Sparky, Jakki and Frtiz. Ed was lying - he always decreased the voltage to 89-90 volts (and adjusted the bias for the lower voltage). It’s questionable origin story is that Ed said when he bought a second Marshall 100-watt head it came from England and the voltage was either wired or set for usage at 240 volts. He didn’t know that, and when he plugged in the amp he could only get sound with it cranked all the way up. The volume output was very quiet but it was distorted like a fully cranked Marshall should be, and he loved the sound. Allegedly he later discovered the voltage mismatch and reasoned that he could use a light dimmer to reduce voltage going to the amp and use the dimmer as an ersatz master volume control. The dimmer blew of couse, so he went to Dow Electronics and they recommended a Variac. Voila! Eureka! Well OK then. I actually think this is a tall tale and that Ed found out about using a Variac with an amp from the dudes at the Charvel workshop. In an old interview, Wayne Charvel mentioned having a Fender Twin Reverb amp in his shop with a built-in variable transformer and that it was something that numerous country players were doing in the LA/bakersfield area around the early 70s. Wayne wasn’t even referring to Ed’s use of the Variac - he was just describing his shop when he started doing business. Connect the dots!

I'm just gonna let the cat out of the bag: one of David's biggest secrets to making such great sounding pedals is that he hand picks the very best sounding diodes for his builds. You gotta sample each diode and "if it doesn't have that chime it ain't worth your time"!

Rick seems like a genuine person. I own a Puresalem Bette and it is my primary guitar for all of my recordings. Puresalem does not upcharge left-handed people and the guitars are well-suited for the indie/dreampop realm that I tend to write in. I have a lot of respect for them as a brand

To shed some light on how customer service looks from this company. This was my response from Carlos when I inquired as to why my order was never cancelled at my request and I’ve been charged for the last several months with no service fulfillment: “all of our customers become alarmingly aware within the first 2 weeks of service of how huge or high volume clientele really is. we even receive new clients daily. You are not the only one who has that specific pedal taste let me tell you, also there was plenty of time to even reach out and update, Many customers who experience delay in 1 week or 2 weeks time usually receive the word from us telling them we experience high volume of clients and your pedal may not be in stock at the moment or with another person at this time. Hence the weekly to bi-weekly addition or removal of few pedals here and there to never cause THIS sort of situation you find yourself in at this current moment in time. So since you did not comply to updating since may 7th, I cant really refund you for being ignorant to our policies and refusing to update a simple Wishlist within 4 months. if you ask me, it sounds like you either did not have the time on your hand/ didn't care to put an effort to add some more pedals to your 6-7 max Wishlist which is VERY small for a service this big with as many customers' as we have. Chalk it up to poor time management because we follow a protocol on whenever this sort of thing happens to update your Wishlist even MINORLY would create a significant chance of consistent pedal shipping/receiving fluid experience. (which many customers experience). “
