I made a stepped pulley from aluminium on the metal lathe in the metal shop in secondary school, but we did it differently. We started with a stepped blank in a four jaw chuck and dialled it in, then faced the end and drilled it. We then swapped back to a three jaw chuck and made a tapered shaft by offsetting the tailstock. The pulley was jammed onto the shaft and the four pulley sections machined. I ran a parting tool to the bottom to set an even width for each pulley section. I still have it over 50 years later.

Waste of time, diameter will be wrong for shoes and thermal surface cracks are still there. Besides they're cheap.
@KSMechanicalEngineering5 күн бұрын
A little bit grinding surface. Diameter isn’t problem for shoes. And we don’t have any crack on this drum. Thank

Good job using that cutting torch. I'm not a fan of stick welding but that is a nice looking weld bead. But damn bro, shorten up that tool overhang. I can see that turning that whole thing down would be a slow process. Not much to chuck onto, lot of stock removal with interrupted cut, and most likely those teeth are work hardened. I'm surprised that replacement sprocket ring, which is obviously for this type repair, does not have weld preps on both faces.

For some of the other comments I've read here. The mounting surface (face) was indicated true, the inner diameter was indicated true using an area that appeared to be beyond the wear area. I see no problem with the chucking and indicating. I am sure that before wasting time doing this job the drum was measured to make sure there was material to allow cleaning up without exceeding maximum size. The scary thing was the length of that grinding wheel arbor, but perhaps it was made for other jobs that need that much extension. Although not shown, I expect that after mounting the grinding attachment the wheel was dressed parallel with the machine axis. For anyone not familiar with grinding, dressing a wheel cleans and trues the wheel, making a straight and round cutting surface. It also exposes new abrasive particles that are clean and sharp to provide free cutting.

The repair was better than having to replace the axle at a large cost. But it was only possible because you have the big lathe.

@KSMechanicalEngineering I get it. But still a little humor? Chill out dude. I have been machining since 1986. This cut was elementary setup including indicators for true and square. But it STILL took WAY more time than I ,as a consumer, would be able to put in. Give me TWO NEW ONES at PREMIUM and it STILL doesn't cover my time. Sorry, I have first world problems.,.... But yeah that's how it is.

Try this next time... See if you can get the bit as close to the tool post as possible. It will reduce the vibration and deflection and give a better surface finish. Also try and wrap the outside of the drum with large rubber bands if possible. It will reduce the harmonics and give a better finish. I've done a lot of truck drums. They're tough on a good machine
