I love these sticks. No anxiety about cutting open tubes ( to get out every single bit of pigment) . These sticks are fantastic with their pigments and affordable.

Thank you so much for such an instructive, practical and eminently watchable tutorial! My local auction house has been passing on unsold glassware to me as I couldn't bear the thought of it all being thrown away. My husband has recently complained however, that you need the constitution of a mountain goat to climb over all the boxes in our front porch, so he will be thrilled to hear that you have inspired me to get my paint brushes out at last. He might be less thrilled to hear that I've just ordered practically my own body weight in Plaid multi-surface paints. Tsk, a minor detail - nothing is going to dent my new-found enthusiasm! Thank you!!

Beautiful artwork! Would love to see how you mount the cards to the frames. Also did you tape off each card area on the big paper in order to get the white edges on them? Thanks.
@gailsupstairsstudio996025 күн бұрын
Great question! I Actually use blank white cards as a base and when I cut down the watercolor page, I cut pieces that are a little smaller than the card so there is a crisp white edge around the painting.
@JoseGonzalez-wq5jdАй бұрын
Do sticks have a hazy white binder and look less transparent than the tubes? I was comparing teal and sodalite, in stick and dot card versions, and the granulation doesn’t look remotely the same and there’s a hazier overall look to the stick. The same thing happens with lunar black. I got my sticks this winter from Blick. Any thoughts?
@gailsupstairsstudio9960Ай бұрын
I haven't found there to be much difference, however I paint mostly florals and don't use a lot of granulators so I am not sure. I purchased my sticks from Blick as well. I am sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
@JoseGonzalez-wq5jdАй бұрын
It’s okay! I just hope I wasn’t given something that’s not DS, is all. The teal looks slightly yellower and less granulating in stick form than the dot sample. I will make sure to eventually get tubes in person. You can’t go wrong with that.

How do you get the two colors on brush?
@gailsupstairsstudio9960Ай бұрын
Great question! There are several ways to do that. I usually use a flat brush so I dip one corner in one color and the other corner in the other color. Then I work the paint into the brush on my palette , re dipping in between until the brush has plenty of paint on it. This takes some practice and is kind of hard to explain but I hope that was helpful. I will try to show how to do it more clearly in an up-coming video.

absolutely beautiful! do you have any advice for what material would be ideal to practice on?
@gailsupstairsstudio9960Ай бұрын
When I started painting with acrylic years ago I used to practice on a 12" by 12" ceramic tile I had left over from a home improvement project. This was great because as long as the paint was still wet , it would wipe of clean and I could use the same tile over and over again. I hope that helps.

Hello Gail, Do the sticks have any graining in the paint like the Daniel Smith fine watercolor?
@gailsupstairsstudio99602 ай бұрын
Great question! I just tested that out. I have Undersea green in both stick form and dried down from a tube. Undersea green is a granulating color. I swatched them out side by side and they both seemed to granulate about the same. I hope that helps.

Hi! Thank you so much. I’m also painting the mailboxes but I use primer spray and did not use rubbing alcohol some are fine but some are peeling off after I put on polyurethane. Can you please tell me how to make rubbing alcohol? I believe that it’s so important to make the paint stick. thank you!
@Ayil973 ай бұрын
also what kind of spray seal do you use?Your painting is beautiful😊
@gailsupstairsstudio99603 ай бұрын
Thank you for watching. If you don't have rubbing alcohol, vinager also works quite well. Just apply with a soft cloth or paper towel and let dry before painting. As for sealer, I don't always use it but if I do, I find great luck with Krylon Crystal Clear if I am painting on metal.

I have painted on metal in the past and have found that letting it air- dry for several days works just fine. If it is going to live outside I might seal it with spray sealer. No need to use the oven. Thank you for watching.
