Backstory Time! Writer of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Edward Albee sent The Screenplay to Katharine Hepburn and begged her to be in the film. A couple weeks later Katharine Hepburn sent Edward Albee a letter back saying..This is better than me! At one point and time Warner Brothers wanted Bette Davis and James Mason or Henry Fonda!

Even after all this Bette Davis still delivers the line better. Elizabeth Taylor is so overdramatic here.

Elizabeth Taylor in this movie is the woman that a man loves, wishes she never turns into. An old woman with utter contempt for her partner who continues to stay with him despite her disappointment in him. In a situation like that a guy would wish that she just dumps him and leaves, because he can't get himself to leave her.

Let's remember that they had a classic playscript to work with. The quality of the writing helps immeasurably.

It was Beyond the Forest. 1949. Bette hated it. She felt she was too old for the part. They gave her some shit roles by the end of the '40s. June Bride and Winter Meeting. And for the finale Beyond the forest. She was fed up they were fed up.

Can't believe everyone slobbering all over Elizabeth Taylor......she's no better , no worse than any other actress. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂. Also the suggestion that Burton wouldn't play drunk characters while being drunk is the biggest crock of shit. 😂😂😂😂 Life long alcoholics do NOT possess the ability to pick and choose when they drink. 😂😂😂 They drink 24/7, he's just as drunk here as in any other role he took. Makes for nice Hollywood bullshit though😂😂😂

Notice Martha smoking as she is reaching for the piece of chicken in the refrigerator. She drops the cigarette on the floor and puts it out with her shoe. Then, a few moments later she grabs the cigarette George is smoking. This is the greatest opening scene to any movie I can think of. Absolutely incredible acting. All four actors were nominated for Oscars. Elizabeth Taylor won and Sandy Dennis won. 🏆

The irony is Bette Davis was considered for the role of Martha, before it went to Elizabeth Taylor. Would've been funny to hear Bette Davis quote herself from some "goddam Warner Brothers epic".

kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpy6o3VoqdeLmZY At 01:50, Davis discusses the famous line from "Beyond the Forest." At an appearance at Carnegie Hall--it might have been at its re-opening--Davis walked onto the stage, waited a few seconds, and then announced with the famous circular arm gesture, "What a Dump!" to an audience that gave her a standing ovation for the remark.
