He makes it sound like tarrifs are a bad thing, however tarrifs even the playing field, bringing jobs home who cares how cheap your junk is from china if you dont have a job that pays the mortgage your not going to buy it anyway.
@CareyLaManna21 сағат бұрын
Appreciate the critique. You're perfectly describing the political rationale for tariffs, I'm describing the economic costs. It's a totally valid opinion to believe that paying higher prices for foreign stuff is worth it in order to increase domestic manufacturing. I took no position on that in the video. Just simply pointed out what a century of data have told us: tariffs (just like all taxes) make things more expensive.
@Sir_Galahad77720 сағат бұрын
@CareyLaManna I saw what you did there, keep it as simple as possible to anger the ignorant liberals who only care about cheap sht. There's a reason why tarrifs have to be put in place and that's to protect the American workers, by sending all the good paying jobs out to china, your left with the low income zombie jobs and complaining about making minimum wage. Like I said when your picking a topic such as tarrifs it's alot more complicated then your going to pay more....dude no has a job that pays the mortgage anymore, these kids are stuck and doing them like this is wrong

This is correct. FOR THE SHORT TERM. In the long term, those companies seeing large tariffs move the production of those goods into the US to loose all tariffs and typically come with tax incentives. Ask anyone who works for foriegn auto companies such as Volkswagen, Acura, Honda, BMW, Subaru who now have plants in the US. Everyone with a brain already knows this. We dont need Mexico or China building the things we need to sustain ourselves. Democrats have been making the same argument for 100 years - without cheap labor who will pick our cotton.
@CareyLaManna20 сағат бұрын
Yes, it will likely shift things to American production, agreed 100%. Of course, if we are now producing things that we used to import that means the resources being used for this new production can't be used to produce other things that we otherwise would be able to produce. "The seen and the unseen." It's easy to see the new domestic jobs that are created/protected by the tariff but tougher to see the jobs that aren't ever created because of it. And like you point out, it's why people of both parties often cheer for new tariffs because they certainly do benefit segments of the population.
@Jermbot1521 сағат бұрын
"Why were economists so against tariffs." Because they were a bad idea that a moron's handlers encouraged him move forward with to distract from the rest of what they're doing.
@BrianWilliams-wg3tm21 сағат бұрын
This is how you get a competitive market, maybe instead of buying something made in china, now it won’t be so cheap and maybe people will buy more AMERICAN made goods!!!
@CareyLaManna21 сағат бұрын
If your goal is for people to buy more American, tariffs are certainly one way to do that. But the market will be less competitive and people will face higher prices. That might be a trade-off that you're willing to make and that's fine.
@BreAnnaHannen-t7b21 сағат бұрын
Please take this down! The only thing that is right is the consumer pays for it in the end. If i decide to buy something from lets say China, to sell in my store, I pay the tarriff. I then pass the tax Ipaid as a small business owner on to the customer. I, the American, pay the tariffs.
@CareyLaManna21 сағат бұрын
With due respect, the main thing that matters is the consumer paying for it in the end. That's the headline. As far as you, the importer, paying the tariff, yes that's true too, and what I said. You pass that tariff along in a couple of ways. One is directly to consumer or whoever is next in the chain by charging a higher price (if you can). The other is by the price you are willing to pay the foreign company for the good (or the price that you charge them for the importing services if that's what you do) by taking into account the effect that the tariff will have on your ability to sell the good once it's in your possession. Most commonly, like I said, the vast majority (and often the entirety) of the tariff is born by the end consumer.

Where are these videos on corporate taxes?
@CareyLaManna21 сағат бұрын
Love to do one. Corporate taxes are paid in one of three ways: higher prices for consumers of the product, lower wages for the firm's workers, or lower share prices for the stockholders. Corporations do not bear the incidence of corporate taxes. But I think you know that lol
@SpaceDarren8 сағат бұрын
@CareyLaManna I did but you nailed it on the head with all three! That earned a follow.
@Jamesreece76221 сағат бұрын
You only pay more if you chose to buy the imported product. Buy domestic. If someone doesn’t buy an import because it’s expensive, that company loses sales. The consumer is the least affected
@CareyLaManna21 сағат бұрын
The nice thing about tariffs is we have over a hundred years of data to look at to see what's happened when a variety of tariffs have been placed. And over and over you see the same thing: the price of the domestically produced good increases. In fact, this is essentially the purpose of protectionist tariffs: to shield the domestic company from competition. Remember, competition is what keeps prices down (relatively). When that competition becomes more expensive it increases demand for the domestic product, increasing its price.
@Jamesreece7629 сағат бұрын
@ Competition. Like when other countries fuck is over but cry when we don’t shill for them? Protect deez nuts. Tariffs are negotiation tools. Already made Mexico and Canada fold like a book.
@Jamesreece7629 сағат бұрын
@ It’s not competition when the opposition is being subsidized to screw you over. One of the flawed aspects to libertarian economics. They don’t weigh the entire context. They just screech free market when in fact they lack the understanding of fair market practices. Mexican avocado cost $5/case. American costs $6/case. We slap a 25% tariff on Mexican avocados, so now they cost $6.5/case. No one buys the more expensive avocados so the Mexican supply sits on a distribution center shelf and rots. People buy domestic. More money in the US economy strengthens the dollar and increases buying power. In 1st world countries, imports from 💩 holes will always be cheaper. That doesn’t mean we should buy it. Trump uses tariffs not for economic reasons but as a tool.

Appreciate the comment. Typically "better products" are more expensive than "cheap crap," especially when a tariff makes the cheap product more expensive; this leads to the local product also becoming more expensive, reducing the purchasing power of the local population.

@CareyLaManna I have a critique if your willing to listen, when you point what's wrong provide a solution or idea that can be proven better than the flaw you otherwise you'll come off as pessimistic and ignorant. It's great that you disagree and using your voice, but you won't get followers if all you do is rely on the viewers hate
@CareyLaManna17 сағат бұрын
@ Definitely willing to listen, appreciate it. You can disagree and I'd be interested to hear why, but I don't think there was anything that is remotely about "hate" in this or any of my uploads. The point of this video (and the first one yesterday) was a really quick, what's a tariff and why do you keep hearing that economists are against them? Basic answer: it's a tax paid by consumers. That's just a statement of fact from any Econ 101 course, no bias or opinion or even judging whether it's good or bad. Just saying it means higher prices for consumers. One person could say ok higher prices but it's good for American companies and we should buy American so it's worth it. Others would say hey it's a tax and taxes are bad so we shouldn't do it. Neither of those value judgments are incompatible with me just saying consumers pay tariffs. As far as me giving my own opinion or solution, I think you're right that it would probably help boost views and engagement as people could be debating my solutions and some people would think they're great and others would hate me but still engage...but that's not the kind of channel I want. If you look at my channel, I'm a high school teacher making educational videos teaching students AP Government and AP Economics. My purpose with these current event videos is to mimic a social studies class where the teacher brings up current events to discuss. IMO what I've always tried to do in class is make sure people understand the facts and why each side thinks what they do, but it's not my role to tell people what they should believe or what I think is best. If you read this long reply, thanks. And thanks for the suggestion, I do appreciate it. I hope you understand my intentions better now and if you have any thoughts, I'm certainly open to it. One other thing I'll say is that I've discovered how tough it is to do this in less than a minute clips. It means I focus on one side or the other in one video and the other side in another video. And to me this feels balanced, but when people only see one and not the other they assume I'm promoting a particular side even when that isn't my intention. Thanks for reading.

How does a company pass a cost to the company that's producing the good? The buying company doesn't set prices.
@CareyLaManna21 сағат бұрын
If a tariff is imposed it's more expensive to get that good across the border so they charge the producer a higher fee for their services to include as much of the tariff as the market will bear.
@the-classic-gamer21 сағат бұрын
Thay can't because if the foreign company ups the price the tariffs are higher on the importer also the tariffs are applied at costumes which is way after the product has already been purchased. No matter what the consumers are the ones that pay 100% of the tariffs

@@CareyLaManna Is the producer the importer or the exporter in your example? Either way the importer pays the tariff. The importer charges its consumers more to offset the cost of the tariffs.

Well, since late 2008 the Fed doesn't even care about money supply anymore. It pretty much just focuses on interest rates as the mechanism to control inflation. Problem was they were in denial in 2021 about inflation and didn't take quicker action so now interest rates have stayed higher longer
