I always see people talking about two person tents being too small for two people and then they put in a GIANT pad to show it. Man idk I just sleep on the ground.

Agreed. Though pad aside, it also really depends on how broad the shoulders of each person is and how tall they are. My shoulders go to the edge of the pad, so regardless of size I couldn’t condense myself any smaller!

Hi there, from Ouray, Colorado! I am wanting to transition to backpack/carry on luggage. I do travel for work. But, my work travels are either I fly my boss to a location and hang out for the duration we are there; then fly him back. Or, I fly him there and airline back home to Colorado. I am mid 50s; and hoping to retire in a couple of years. So, while still working, I'm envisioning mostly just flying on US carriers; maybe taking my wife on 1 or 2 international trips per year. After retiring, I would like to transition to heading out on 2-3 month international trips (I am very well traveled, but I do want to get my wife those opportunities); then returning home for a month or two, then repeat. I do work out daily also; but that is just walking. So, maybe aside from bringing some very walk friendly shoes too, I don't need a bunch of work out gear. I currently carry a 17 inch laptop; which is due for modernizing soon. I will definitely downsize to a 15 inch when I do that next! So....I am struggling to decide between a Farpoint 40L and one of these Porter 46L. I do like the option of "better to have the space and not need it" than "Need the space and don't have it". Though I'd love not to get one, I'm totally down to getting one of those "personal item" packs too such as the Daylite or Daylight Plus's from Osprey. Thank you very much for this awesome video highlighting the 46L!

Thanks for taking the time to comment. I would say if you need those extra 6L, you will be less limited. It sounds like you would prefer to heir on the side of more space, so that is an important note to consider.

On the PCT and sending home an Xmid pro 1 for a copper spur long. Even on dry mostly nights my foot box of my quilt touches the wall of the Xmid and gets damp. Xmid is a great tent..very light but the copper spur comes in the long version.

Here's thought based on the adage that wear black is slimming😂 A black backpack may not actually be small(er) in real life dimensions, but if u pack it up smartly and cinch things down it will LOOK smaller due to the optical illusion that the color black plays on your eyes. This will allow u to get away with being maybe a bit over dimensions and avoid checked bag fees!
@packtravelhike
@packtravelhike 2 ай бұрын
For sure. And if you don’t carry it in a way that looks super full or very heavy, people usually don’t bat an eye at the idea that you are just wearing a regular sized backpack. Whereas if you wear a “backpacking” backpack, the optics is that it’s stuffed full of all the things you would ever need to survive forever.

I'm looking for a bag to take as a carry-on to Europe this summer, and plan to be flying Lufthansa and ITA Airways. I really love this pack design and style, but should I be worried about the 46 X 40 X 31 cm dimensions?
@packtravelhike
@packtravelhike 3 ай бұрын
Definitely check the carrier for their dimensions limit. With that said, if you don’t stuff it to the max, they usually ignore backpacks. Worst case you can throw a couple layers on as you get onto the plane if need be.

Great Comparison and review! I bought the Copper Spur HV UL3 Long (for two people) and I can't tell you how much the minimal extra weight and pack space is worth it. It is so nice for rainy days to have room inside to move around. I agree with wind for the awning but it is nice to be able to cook underneath it when it is raining and I have had no issues with rain leaking off the sides into the tent. I love it so much that I'm eying the UL2 for single backpacking.

Mine ripped on the initial setup. Rainfly tab tore off. Maybe I got a bad one. Overall, the components and fit seem stressed almost to max, too close to breaking, for my comfort. Impressive but stressful. I can handle a little more weight for less stress. Maybe the wrong tent for me.

This guy must have gotten a bad piece of salmon. 😂😂😂😂 Just got a MiniMo this week. Perfect for cooking as well as boiling water. Thru hikers who have had a bad experience with alcohol stoves and flimsy heat shields, know what I mean when I say I’ll take the extra ounces for the stability and speed. I can always lose a few pounds of love handles to make up for it. 😂😂😂😂❤❤❤❤ good review.

After comparing the Farpoint 40 and the Porter 46, I've come to the conclusion that the Porter is not only a better design but also better quality. I bought it during that 1/2 off sale! Needed a 2-person tent that I would actually share with another camper. Used it once so far this past summer on a short in/out backpacking trip to Twin Lakes, Desolation Wilderness, CA. Will definitely be my go-to shelter when I plan to basecamp for couple days w/ company. When it rained, my 10 year old son and I had plenty of room to hang out and play cards. The tougher floor material and footprint also gave me some peace of mind. Kids can be less mindful and rough. LOL

@@packtravelhike it's on the heavier side for backpacking, but I couldn't pass it up at that sale price. Only have one minor negative - rain can land inside the tent when opening the door because there isnt an overhang at the top. If you don't zip the door all the way up, then rain cant fall in. However, it's difficult to get in/out with thst smaller opening with out brushing your back against the wer door. When it stops raining, I can temporarily push the bathtub floor inward while shaking rainwater off from the fly. Still, small amounts of water or drip can get in. I just use a bandana to wipe up that up. My other tents have always had a better overhang.

Hi Stumbled across your video, Well made, I've Hiked PCT,AT, and CDT and my tent of choice was the Big Agnes Flycreek HV UL3, I love the extra room and the weight is very similar to the 2. Plus this is my home for 6 months , I had planned to Hike the Florida trail so Brought the Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL3 again a 3 man and i love it, love the two doors and yes i use the Porch which is great on a warm evening , Haven't used in wet storms but have had a few windy nights SO just a 3 man tent for a solo hiker but all my gear fits inside.. But im yet to take my dog, Like you i always swear by the footprint and if its really Crappy ground i sometime put a layer of tyvek inside Havnt had a puncture in my Pad yet!! (but over kill) Once again great video snailtrainer

Great breakdown, thanks. I have the bikepack versions of both. Don’t love either but neither are bad, just not great. But what tent is? The Tigerwall is just a better version of the Fly Creek so great for backpacking. The Copper Spur is nice for kayaking where freestanding is nice. The MSR Freelite (2015) is roomier at 50” wide at both ends but shorter in height. No fist pumps of victory!😂

I've got the copper spur 1 in olive green , I'm 6'5" and I find it roomy . Bit too bright inside compared to my old tunnel tent so yeah the Tiger wall would let way too much light through for me. Really like the olive green colour , just wish it would block more outside light . As for letting a dog inside...... well I've seen in other videos they tend to put holes in the floor with their claws , unintentionally of course. Having a footprint doesn't help ......

Nice thank you! The veranda vestibule setup functions best as a cooking area in bad weather. Having two sides to work with improves your chances of being able to cook in the lee of the prevailing wind. But if this is on your mind, I agree with the reviewer when suggesting that buyers always size UP on the CSHVUL series. Not just because of the 25 inch pad problem (good call!). But because if you are likely to be tent bound in bad weather, cooking out of this amazing tent, you will want and need the extra space. I own three CSHVUL2s and everyone on my trips gets his or her own tent…

Love this pack just got back from a 2 month Thailand trip. I put a small 20L pack inside for day trips. Never had to pay for check in bag always carry on so saved money on flights. My only issue is it’s a little short for my 21” torso but it’s not a deal breaker and wish it had a water bottle holder. 20-25lbs carries perfect but I have over stuffed it with over 30lbs

Awesome way to save money! A water bottle holder would be nice but I remedied that by buying a Vapur collapsable bottle that has a built in carabiner which I have attached to the loop where the strap would go.
