Thanks for showcasing Huibo Hou's incredible body of work, I found it hugely inspiring. I love that she has her own unique take on photography and is not afraid of going beyond the boundaries of landscape photography "rules and norms", it makes her unique and creative. Loved it!

Way too long for audiences with serious attention deficits nowadays. Break it up into segments on longer than 30 minutes.

Wanted to add to this.. Edward Burtynsky and Andreas Gursky are digital shooters... so not everyone who is at the top of the sphere are film shooters or large format shooters.. they use digital backs.. mostly on MF cameras.. sometimes of LF. On lenses... LF lenses are actually not as good as 35mm lenses... its just the format is so much bigger the resolving power is greater... stick LF on 35mm and im sure you would see not great results. modern 35mm lenses or MF lenses have far greater resolving power.

Tims a great guy and does great scans. in terms of costs.. Tim trashes any lab in the UK. Tim gives a full resolution scan at the largest size, but labs dont do that. They make you pay for difference sizes, 25 pounds would only get you around a 10x8 ! You're talking into the hundreds to get a same size scan as Tim provides! ON film i slightly disagree with Tim. ITs a bit of an oxymoron... they want to keep film alive, but they keep on putting up prices. ITs a niche market now. The new kids on the block producing film i cant take seriously. they tend to be gimicks for Gen X peeps lol Kodak and Ilford are the only 2 we can now rely on for pro films. 60 Pounds for 10 sheets of Portra 160, or 300 pounds for 10x8 isnt sustainable for me. Catlabs LF film is ok, but not great. Ilford prices are ok.. 48 pounds for 25 4x5 sheets for say HP5, bit more for Delta 100. This is why people are giving up on it, and going digital medium format. Tim may shoot it still i dont know, but he uses Sony cameras with tilt shift lenses or cambo systems, even Joe Cornish and David Ward have dropped film years ago with Velvia 50 going in the UK. In terms of large format film, Tim mentions Portra 400.. i know hes done work on the DR of this film, but it dont agree it has 14 stops, In my real world experience, its around 8/ 9 stops... ive had to use Grads in many situations, otherwise tone is lost. I much prefer Ektar 100 for landscape work, far superior in terms of colour and contrast for landscape, far less grain, yes the DR is less, but its easily resolved.. Velvia had about 6 stops maybe 7 with a drum scan... so Ektar is far more suitable but you just cant shoot it the same being a negative film. I love my GFX for a lot of work, but the process of LF is unique which is why i cant give it up.

Wow, so well researched and kudos to the team for covering length and breath. Yes infact, most Bhutanese live in abroad mostly in Australia, its rather short term for their qualification upgrade and we love our king and country ❤❤❤

I did a worksop in Zion NP with Eric several years ago. He is a super photographer with a great vison of nature, including some very interesting and unique abstracts. His books are well worth it and I highly recommend them.

Really enjoyed this discussion. What an achievement this competition is. It really does promote photographers and photography and that is what separates it from the other competitions which are essentially cash cows. Great work Tim Parkin and the Talking Landscape crew.

Thanks for hosting Tim for this chat... I'm so glad you love what we're doing with the competition... we are trying hard to make it the best... with our limited time. The social media part is especially tedious but I'm glad to hear Paul say that it has value when we share images there that perhaps didn't make it to the end but are still fantastic images.

I came for inspiration from Eric and was hooked by Paul's comments. I feel like Paul doesn't just look at photos, he _experiences_ them and now I have a new goal for myself. ;-) Great episode - I'm even more excited to receive Eric's book!

Great interview! 👏🏼 Most of the photographers interviewed offer an opportunity to commiserate and embolden my own feelings about art and the landscape and this one was no exception. I thought the part about airplanes and their disruptive noise was interesting as I am a pilot. We are given plenty of caution about hearing protection - including noise cancelling headsets, etc - but no thought is given to creatures on the ground. I definitely feel that is something that should change.
@EricBennettfilm
@EricBennettfilm Жыл бұрын
Yes, it is something I feel deserves way more attention. Some other ways it disturbs wildlife that I forgot to mention is the ability to communicate, namely birds through their songs that can get muffled through airplane noise. The sounds and vibrations also disturb trees, which we have recently learned also have an ability to "hear" and "speak." Airplanes also create infrasound, along with electrical currents and other machines, which we are unable to detect as it falls below the range of what we are able to hear, but many animals, insects and plants can indeed detect it. I go into this a bit more in my new book, so I think you will enjoy it! Glad you enjoyed the interview!

Thought 2 hours was going to be too long, but really interesting! I can relate to the weather and terrain of the Paparoas …. What looked like a tame trip, turned out to be very demanding…. Off track travel can be hellish!!

I gained a lot from Sarah’s workshops in Out of Oregon last October, and this video made me want more instruction, especially on close-ups of flowers and textures. I immediately took my camera out it photograph the moss and seaweed on the beach, and I saw things I wouldn’t have seen otherwise. Thank you, Sarah!

Great conversation. Personally, I think Alex is much better photographer now than when he won all his awards. The problem with social media is it becomes a popularity contest and what is popular is not necessarily new or interesting or even good and as such its influence is more likely to lead to mediocrity rather than something outstanding. As Alex says, quiet and intimate work gets easily overlooked and yet it is this work that tends to be more mysterious, allows more artistic licence and is ultimately more engaging if you are prepared to spend time with it.
