Does the compounding method change if the guitar has a satin finish?
@HandToolWoodGuy
@HandToolWoodGuy 28 күн бұрын
That is generally trial and error. Satin finishes are really hard to match, as they don't stay a stable sheen. If you look at most satin finished instruments you will see that the areas that the forearm rub against, for example, change and become glossy and stand out quite a bit. If I work on those i cannot guarantee you won't notice the repair.

im 45. just started wood working and fishing last year X_x. I was so stupid. what wonderful hobbies. Ive got to teach my son asap. hes just 6 now. so ill have to wait a bit on the wood working hhaha. went fishing 10 times, zero fish, learned something every time,i blame the rivers near my house in nagoya for sure. First fish was 40cm. Mullet. I think im spoiled to catching huge fish now haha ! Im not very good at catching fish yet but, ive caught half a dozen crabs with walking widths of a good 6 inchs and i now know where to find unlimited baby crabs for bait. not too shabby. got my first circular saw last week. been studying about all the dangers and techniques. cant wait to get started. !

You don't know me but you and I have a lot in common. For one we both do hand tool wood working and we share the same teacher, of course I,m talking about Mr. Sellers. The man is the real deal! We also share interest in music, I have been playing guitar from age 11 and I am 69. My grand dad got me started. I like old Country, bluegrass and some old country rock, some of my favorites are Merl Haggard, George Jones, Glen Campbell, John Fogerty, The Eagles to name a few. I also love fishing and hunting although I'm getting so old and feeble I don't hunt much anymore. I live in a small town very near the Mississippi river, makes big cat fishing pretty handy. So this is why I feel like you and myself have a lot in common and consider us friends . Oh, and I'm a big-o redneck and it take one to know one! I have binge watched just about all of your videos in the last few days. mostly your woodworking videos and how you struggled in the beginning with lack of tools, I felt your pain brother. I enjoyed your videos immensely. I'm also interested in building an acoustic guitar, even though I have 6 acoustics stashed in the living room, a bass and amp and a stratt and two amps in the basement. Can you have too many? Gotta go for now my friend, take care, Later.

You need to take your crappiest plane and grind about 8" or 9" radius camber on the iron, open the mouth accordingly, this plane will remove up to an 1/8" of wood at every stroke thereby cutting you planing time enormously!

The horns are very difficult. Im doing by hand in my projects, since I dont have the appropriate tools. I am going to level the sides by hand too with a sanding block. @HandToolWoodGuy
@HandToolWoodGuy 3 ай бұрын
Yes, the horns require a ton of work, and just when you think you've got them done you find out they need more work. Sanding is tedious, and seems almost never ending. But the more attention you pay to that part the better the results. And yes, you can level the sides with a flat block, using the coarsest grit of sandpaper you can possibly get. Good luck on your build!

Just because you paid a dollar for something doesn't mean it isn't worth more than what you paid. Could you go out today and get another one for a dollar? Probably not. I bought a 10" Disston backsaw from the teens for $3. Would I sell it for just $3? Not a chance. It took me 30 years to find a saw like that. I just don't have that kind of time left to find another one either.

@@HandToolWoodGuy Hey you never know. Two weeks ago I found a Witherby chisel at a yard sale. A nice and long paring chisel. She's a beaut. Well it was a little rough when I picked it up. But it cleaned up real good. When I got it I didn't know what it was. It was too dirty to see any markings on it. But they never make cheap long chisels. That's just not a thing. At least I've never seen one.
@HandToolWoodGuy
@HandToolWoodGuy 3 ай бұрын
Yeah, that was a nice score. The problem with flea markets is you sort through a lot of junk, and you can't really choose what you will run up on. If you need a tenon saw, for example, but all you keep running into are panel saws....you just gotta buy it when you see it. Only other recourse might be ebay, if a person has the budget. I did not. I started out with Harbor Freight chisels and one Marples blue handled one inch chisel I found. And a 70s era Nicholson rip panel saw. Did not even know how to sharpen it, just used it how I found it. The good news is that you don't have to have new or really high quality tools to make; you just need ones that work for what you are doing. Hand tools are more about technique, IMHO.

Thanks for sharing your tool "arsenal". I love your minimalist approach. Lately I've decided it's time to start using the tools I've acquired over the years and selling the ones I won't use. Ultimately, my goal is to make all my own hand planes and sell the majority of my metal bodied planes and thin my tools down to what I use/need and let the rest go. I've been more of a hand tool collector than user for the last 15 years. I'm a sucker for inexpensive vintage tools. I don't buy a lot of tools but I'll admit I find it difficult to pass up a good deal on a quality hand saw priced at $3-$5, a cheap brace for $3, or even a cheap Stanley plane for $5. I enjoy buying them and bringing them back to life.

@@HandToolWoodGuy I understand about finding quality woods for projects. Most of what I can find around here is pine and what Lowe's and HD have to offer. There is a Rockler about 55 miles away but at their prices I just avoid them. I bought a vintage blade off of eBay a few months ago to make a Krenov style plane with. A plane body popped up on eBay, a coffin smoother with an enclosed handle, and I bid on it and won the bidding. I think it was under $15 delivered. I didn't plan to use them together but the blade fits, width wise. I'll need to make a wedge for it to be able to use it.

I agree with your point that you don't need a lot of tools to work wood. When I first started thinking I wanted to be a woodworker I bought a table saw, router, band saw, scroll saw - two of them to be exact, a lathe, etc... They all gather dust since I mostly use hand tools for my projects. For bigger projects I'll use the power tools, but I much prefer the peace and quiet that comes from hand tools the older I get.

I never considered the top splitting during the trimming process. Would a thinner blade with less coarse teeth, like used with a jeweler's/Knew Concepts fret saw, help minimize that risk?
@HandToolWoodGuy
@HandToolWoodGuy 4 ай бұрын
It would. The blade I used was the finest toothed blade I could get locally, which is Big Box stuff. I don't usually have the budget for the "good stuff", lol. Most makers use a band saw that only cuts one direction; down. The coping saw is moving up and down and puts a lot more flex in the top. It is what it is; you deal, and do your best. Nicely executed marking knife. I had thought about doing that some years ago, even went looking for some used paring knifes, and then life got in the way and I completely forgot to do it. Something to add back onto my to do list. If you can source some leather, you might be able to screw it down from the top of the vise, so the leather hangs down. I believe Paul Sellers did something similar years ago. Another option would be to stretch the leather it across the inner chops and screw it to the sides of the chops. If you screw to the sides the wood should not come into contact with the screws.
