This is great. The chord progression reminded me of The Wings, from the soundtrack to Brokeback Mountain, played here (from 1:39) by the composer Gustavo Santaolalla kzbin.info/www/bejne/g6GVo3-ieb-hh5Ysi=gedt-KOwZMnnmLMU

I'm 5 min in. "A lot of noodling" he says. OMG dude THAT'S WHAT WE ALL WANT TO LEARN TO DO!!!!! Not just play chord progressions! I've figured out a few of these and you aren't even close to his "noodling." lol Keep trying though.

To connect the dots about the E, D, A shapes, always being in the same order, it actually comes from the CAGED system. Now most of the cowboy or bar chords you know contain triads, even though some notes are repeated. If you know your triad shapes within the chords and memorize the inversions (i.e. where are the root and the 3rd) you get access to all the other chords as mentioned by Henry (i.e. minor, sus 2, sus 4, diminished, ...). What took and still takes the most time to me is to let it sink so it becomes usable / automated :)

So you pointed at some fingers, I don't know which ones, and said 5,1,3, and the light bulb turned off. Every guitar lesson on YT I have watched, at least 500 now, it seems like the lesson starts and I have missed something, like I missed the first 10 lessons and I'm supposed to know exactly what people are talking about because you already taught the part I don't know, so I stay lost and can never learn ANYTHING. I can't afford lessons, so I think it really is time I give up and throw this guitar in the trash.

Maybe youu hear this a lot but you just changed a really big deal for me. Hunting for a triad and knowing the root will totally change the way I look at triads. I never thought about it this way but will never forget it. I'm a lead guitar player in a small town band (two years now...and I'm 69...out oldest is 73) and I guarantee you the boys will ask me what I found! I'm already messing with it. Thanks for pointing out what is now obvious! Rock on! 🤟🤟🤟

Cool stuff, but even with playing the video at half speed, pausing, and replaying, I'm still stumped. Not by the pattern idea, but by where you choose a starting position up the neck from the original open cord form. What am I missing?
@henryolsenguitar17 күн бұрын
I’m not sure how to answer this using text. I do have an entire theory course that goes step by step. Learn the first shape using E for now. But really learn it super well. Then move it just a half step up. You will then magically be playing F. Then another half step up F# and it goes on and on.
@MikeDonatello17 күн бұрын
@henryolsenguitar I'm subscribed to the all access membership, and I understand the idea of movable shapes and the CAGED system. I guess I was asking how to know which of the forms to play after the open position but I think I just answered it for myself after sleeping in it. Thanks
