Peter I am assuming that you are talking about catamarans in general? Cabins: Generally an owners version is more popular in the secondhand market, which means that if your boat is a three cabin instead of a four cabin, you will likely sell the boat faster as most used boat buyers want to use the boat to go cruising and wants an owners cabin. However there are many families cruising nowadays and they require more cabins, in which case the four cabin is ideal. But by far the owners cabin is still better and you get a better price for it. Bathrooms: In smaller boats (38-42) a jack & Jill arrangement is great (two toilets / washrooms with a connecting shower stall in the middle). It gives you more space and negates wet-heads (shower and toilet in one). Bigger boats must have en-suites for each cabin. Flybridges: Fly bridges are becoming a lot more accepted because it is a great feature when at anchor. While a semi-raised helm station is great when doing long passages and couples feel more secure, I think that people are becoming more used to the flybridges. We had both and at first we insisted on the semi-raised helm but now that we have experienced both, we defintely prefer the flybridge. Flybridges are usually enclosed now and is secure and comfortable during inclement weather. People argue that with a flybridge the boom is high and the center of gravity is high which is all true but one have to adjust for that. We set our boat up (Bali 5.4) with various sets of sails for various conditions to make it safe and get good performance. Remember, unless you are a circumnavigator on a short timeline, you will likely spend 80-90% of your cruising life at anchor and that flybridge is great to have for space and comfort. Front Lounges: We were never big fans of the front lounge because we wrongly assumed that it may be dangerous in big seas but our opinion have changed since. We have tried and tested these boats (Leopard and Bali) with the front lounges in various conditions on passages in various parts of the world and it is a game changer. That front door is not only good for exceptional ventilation of the boat but also for comfort at anchor. Obviously these are generalities and these opinions are based on our personal experience over 30 years of full time living aboard five different catamaran brands and sailing and testing various catamarans for clients. We also deal with many buyers and sellers and in general terms these are also their opinions but it ultimately comes down to your personal preferences and your application and skill level.

A little confused. I thought Mithril had radar? You "narrowly missed" this powerboat and were close enough to hear his cries for help, even thinking they were coming from your own crew, but you did not pick up the contact in advance on radar? I assume the other boat did not have AIS broadcasting, or it was off because the vessel had lost power. In this day and age there is definitely something fishy about an offshore boat (power or sail) that does not have AIS Tx. If he had AIS Tx, even without a VHF, he could have used DSC to call for help (and who goes out without a working VHF, at least a portable handset?). Am curious to know what the USCG found aboard.

Doug, yes. The only reason we could hear him was because we were sailing. If the engines were on, we would have missed him. The boat had no lights, no VHF and obviously no AIS. Apparently there was only one man onboard and he has been drifting for at least two days or so according to him. It was about a 30ft powerboat. We also thought that it was a little strange and did not want to approach. Not only was it a little rough, so not safe to come alongside but it was a pitch dark night and we did not know what we would find. We decided to simply circle the boat at a distance and wait for the Coastguard. It took about two hours or so for them to arrive. But we don't know yet what the problem was.

Yes! Proper boat etiquette! Always help others because you never know when it might be you. Our old 29' Fountain with twins was nicknamed "Tow-mator" because we towed in so many. 😂 I loved that boat. Glad you all didn't collide! Sounds like it was close! Safe travels!

Tom that "chick" just so happened to have sailed around the world and she has a great deal of experience on sailboats. Be that as it may, cats can generally out run predicted bad weather. With modern technology and good weather prediction, that can easily be done and that is what she was referring to. Seldom can you outrun sudden squalls or bad weather in the middle of the ocean unless you have some warning. But in general terms, we have sailed out of the way of weather many times on our cat as we are actually doing right now as we speak. I am on Starlink and we can see the weather coming and are currently sailing on our Catana at between 10-12 knots north to get ahead of a storm. We will be in port well ahead of the storm. If we had been on our 45ft monohull which averaged about 5 knots, we would have had to hunker down much sooner or ride out the storm in the ocean somewhere.

Lekker, lekker we are the 2nd owners of hull no 1 Catana 47, I would love to change out my front windows to open. Maybe we can get some frames welded up and convert that some time. We are cruising south east Asia with very light winds and most times we can sail still where we would be motoring in our previous Leopard Cat.

it is unfortunate that you did not like the boat. As for the quality, I can only speak to the boats that we have received here and so far our clients have been happy. Having said that, we have a vigorous survey process when we receive thee boats on behalf of our clients. I do not know who you chartered with but perhaps maintenance should be stepped up? As for sailing ability, I find it hard to believe that the boat under performs so dramatically. After sailing across the Atlantic, up and down the east coast of the US and back and forth to the Bahamas, by various different delivery skippers and owners, we have had very favorable reports. As for the space - it is a 38ft boat i.e. Lagoon 38. It has limited space like any other 38ft boat. Compromises has to be made on every boat. I hope that answers that.

Great tour. I was curious about this boat and your impressions after several months of use. Do you prefer this half-helm closure to your Bali 5.4 - which was also enclosed ? How much faster is this boat over the Bali (which has a hard/closed bow)? I'm waiting for the front sailing cockpit version of this - similar to Windelo.

They are two very different applications as you know. The semi raised helm station is great because you stay in contact with people inside the boat and that is particularly great when you do long passages. However we quickly got used to the Bali 54 flybridge after we sold our Lagoon 450 Sportop. It is obviously removed from the living space down below and that is not ideal for some - even for us in the beginning. But we got used to it and now we love the flybridge. We now prefer the flybridge purely because we love the space. We spend a ton of time up in the flybridge.

HI there! You are welcome! We have actually discussed this in another video but to be honest, we did not have many issues at all. The only issue we had that we considered a nuisance was the bamid system but they need it in Europe, so it is what it is. We just paid extra attention so it did not get over filled. The other issue was the 400 amp hours of batteries. We added more lithium. The nets are terrible in our opinion because they are too "springy" and you bounce all over the place but that is personal preference and we changed the nets. We would have preferred bigger forward hatches in the forepeaks. They have changed it now in the newer models, so it's not a problem anymore. As far as issues with the boat itself, we really cannot complain at all.

Tested one week, charter version 4 double booths and 2 bathrooms: some positive aspects, others negative but passable, some very serious negative aspects. Among the first: genial the sliding door and the great finishes that make the central salon space inside/out amazing (a pale the need to close the sliding door in navigation, so it is a continuous open and close it); very comfortable external passage; sun-take ploughs (even if shaded is necessary in order to also be able to use it as a living space during the day); very large and well-central cooking plan (reduced tilting during navigation). USB charging socket in wheelhouse. Between the latter: the quality of the furniture material is very poor (5-month boat with mobibeds already in very poor condition); bow booths completely unsuitable for two adults, perhaps two children; unacceptable bathrooms (absurately small: I'm 1,77m per 80 kg but I had real difficulties in using bathrooms); lack of a central pank in the salon table (in fact, the very large table can only be used with half of the commensal seats, the other standing or using chairs which are not the maximum for navigation); beds raised with a low mattress (virtually spread all times the salts and drops from the bed); insufficient stowage volumes in booths for 2 adults; the same applies to shafts and accessories to the boat; hallucining “goose” fastening system: once in two, the manoeuvre is detached and the manoeuvre must be resumed; tender clearance system: this is the most absurd system it has ever used (compliments to which it was designed); the freshwater reserve is used for the discharge of the WC (because it is unnecessary freshwater waste); a dissaler that can only be used by a stationary boat and with an engine running; the version used did not have shading for the helmsman (which remained roasted in very short time); cartographic instrumentation only on the right wheelhouse (at the end, six forced to use the tablet and leave to lose the instrumentation). Small bow cabins: simply hallucinants, which cannot be used other than as a sail locker; 38 feet, however, too small for 8 adults (not recommended this version 4 booths 2 bathrooms). Finally, on the seriously negative aspects, which make the boat essentially unsafe: absolute insufficient visibility from the helm station, both when sailing and even more so when mooring (really dangerous boat and not usable alone); inadequate handrails in the external part of the deckhouse which in rough sea conditions do not allow you to move safely (between the stern part and the bow there are 2 meters or more in which you can move at full speed); lack of large skylights in the cabins, and especially in the stern (which, although they allow for a free gangway, make the cabins absolutely suffocating and in case of emergency do not allow escape via the manhole); maneuverability: the boat responds very badly to tacks with delays and jerks which practically require completing/helping the maneuver every time with the help of the engines

Rented one of these in Greece. It's a essentially a motorised platform. It is heavy and extremely under rigged. It will not move by sails alone. We did 3-4 knots reaching in 15 knots wind.

Hi Brian that is hard to believe. There must be some issue. The boats are not heavy. However it is under rigged for light wind because it only has a jib, no Genoa or Code Zero. They do this in the charter fleets. But I think if you go to the Bali owners group you will see that sailing ability is not an issue for these cats.

Hey guys ex saffa here, were based on the sunshine coast queenslsand Australia, were about to buy a leopard 48 and putting into charter with whitsunday escapes based at airlie beach, then after 4 years we are looking at taking it out and living aboard and opening a crew charter. Hey there! This seems like a good strategy however the Leopard 48 is a discontinued model, correct? I would rather get a newer model to start with so that you will have a newer model when you phase the boat out at the end of the charter contract. You will get a better charter rate on newer models when you charter the boat yourself. Also, boats generally need a lot more upkeep after about seven years depending on the use of it. But this is about the time that you may have to replace sails and other expensive equipment. We have so much information on our website about charter management. Currently I am very disappointed from Bali. I ordered my Bali 4.2 two years ago. No "welcome" letter, nothing written beside the purchase contract from the dealer. I will pick up my Bali 4.2 in Tunisia next month. The dealer told me, I have just one day to inspect the boat and I had to leave the port Sidi Daoud at the same day. You said something about 3 days for full inspection before signing any acceptance paper. Do you have any tips for me?

I am so sorry to hear that. This is a rule from the government so there is not anything they can do, but because of these issues, we no longer accept boats in Tunisia. We have our boats delivered to Sicily where we send the Catamaran Guru team to survey the boat before we accept it. If we find issues, the Bali team will fix defects and after that is done we will do another inspection and then sign acceptance. I don't know who your dealer is but perhaps they can do something like that to help you. It is not possible to survey the boat in one day and even if you do find issues, they will not be able to fix it there because the government demands that you leave immediately.

You're welcome! This video is a few years old. We mostly use soft shackles now but the pelican hook shackle is very handy and easy to use.

There has been a question about Bali's quality in many of the chat groups! Many owners of previous models have stated the company quality control was lacking. They have also stated the company was slow to address the their complaint and often delayed or did not address those issues promptly. I noticed in your video that you stated there was some minor issues on the way to delivery. Was that some manufacturing issues and if so then did Bali address those issues in a quick and efficient manner to the customers approval?

Mark I honestly cannot speak for other dealers but from our experience, our clients have been treated fairly. We have a very rigorous survey by our reps in France when we take possession on behalf of the owners at the factory. The boats then arrive in the US where we address any issues that may have come up during the delivery. This is all transparently recorded on the owner dashboards of each Bali owner for all parties involved to access, including owners, captains, factory and maintenance company. This keeps everyone honest and every issue is recorded and addressed before the item is ticked off the list. There will always be something that needs attention on a boat and a new boat is no different. It is how your dealer addresses it that makes the difference, so choose your “partner” carefully. Hopefully this answered your questions.

We have a Bali 4.2 in sailing school and a Bali 5.4 that we live on. The quality is good and getting better.
