Hey Kay, good job. I've started out making beats for fun in FL Studio about 10 years ago at a young age just like you, and I would like to share some tips with you that I've learned over the years that I hope will help you in music making: 1. Sometimes simplicity is the winning formula. I feel like you started with a good modestly sized set of concurrent instruments playing, but as some point overdid it a bit. If you want to have more variety throughout the full beat then try to place instruments in place of others instead of just stacking more, or tone down the patterns of existing instruments to be less distracting/prominent. Each concurrent instrument is like a voice of it's own, you would preferably want to have one instrument to be most expressive (aka "lead"), while the rest of the instruments support the lead instead of trying to speak on their own and end up with a clash of many voices at the same time, which may end up very messy. You did this well with the bass, which didn't try to steal the spotlight from the other instruments and went well with the beat as a supporting instrument. 2. I think the horns are a bit too loud and intense over themselves, especially at this part 3:19, where the top row goes B to C# then back to B. The first B plays for too long over the C# and it makes the horns interfere with themselves. I also certainly don't want to tell you how to compose music in your own way, but I personally would recommend to have snappier, shorter, more "staccato" horn patterns, which was a very common practice back in the 70s/80s funk songs (which hip hop directly came from). Especially considering the fact you already have a very prolonged/sustained bright pad pattern over the beat. 3. I feel like the swing-y timing on the beat is a bit too harsh, I'm not sure if you used that "Swing" setting slider, if you did, I found that the best value is at around ~40%. I hope this helps you in the future. Best of luck to you and your music career!
