I love this so much John Luke 😭 the promise to replace your dream only when you find something you’re more passionate about is real. It can be so easy to throw in the towel too soon. I’m rooting for you as well - mostly, to build that community. As an older / newer filmmaker, it’s scary pivoting so late in age, and I’m inspired by more people living their hairy scary dreams together! Thanks for the timely inspo.

Ive been noticing recently that a lot of my favourite art, especially in music, I don't understand. And thats WHY I like it. because it feels like the artist wrote it for them not for me, not to make it palatable or consumable- and I can find my own meaning in it but the ambiguity that comes from (for lack of a better word) 'selfish" art is so much more interesting. Ive started trying to really tune in to what I WANT to do instead of what I think I should do, and the more I explore that the more I feel that I am creating work that feels like my own. I've discovered a motto that has really progressed my art style and ideas: 'if it's boring only do it on purpose" - if I feel bored at an point while drawing, I acknowledge it and then make a conscious decision whether to change it up so its less boring, or lean into the boredom because I actually want what I it will accomplish. For example the other day I was drawing a person, and I was doing my usual habit of putting effort and energy into drawing the face, the pose etc, but when I got to drawing the hair I felt bored, thinking 'I don't know what hairstyle to do', at which point I usually just scribble in some messy lines and move on. But then I thought - this is my art, this is my house, I can do what I want - so now when I feel like that I will do an intentional scribble in a different colour as abstract hair, or I will draw a cloud as hair or vines and leaves, or floating hair. it seems so simple now that I say it but the more I do it the more I find new areas of my art to implement it. The other half of this approach is doing boring things on purpose, so sometimes I'll look at the drawing and think ' no, I actually want proper hair here because it's what I want out of this drawing, and so I will consciously put in effort to creating realistic and well drawn hair. Using this approach and combining the two methods of acknowledging boredom in my work has made it much more representative of my own mind and style, and has made me a lot more playful and exited in the stuff I make. I hope this can help or inspire someone :)

It doesn't matter how old you are, even in midlife you are still trying to figure it out. Do what you love, follow your passion and don't be afraid to take chances with your career especially when you are younger.
