I am an Egyptian and I am very uneasy about the role the AUC and other western NGOs play in shaping our culture and promoting democracy and instability in my country. Please focus only on education not politics and culture. Culture should be shaped by religious institutions and by rural and beduin traditions not colleges. Colleges are for learning sciences and technology only.

They've been talking tough for decades now on both sides of the spectrum. Humanity has had the capacity to destroy the world times over, with the help of scientists (it doesn't get more "intellectual" than that) yet still here we are. Not that the voices of doom aren't rooted in reality, but thus far catastrophic scenarios have fortunately remained theoretical. It is, too, plausible that both sides (that is, the powers-that-be, the ones who can push the proverbial button to send us all into hell, which wouldn't be VERY bad for business and let's face it, if anything, all elites care about is making a buck, keeping everyone else pinned underground a deceptive cave and letting the anxious few know-it-all's feed off a Chomsky-slice of doom) somewhat understand (we'd be kidding ourselves that they do not keep the channels of communication open under the doomsday table) what's at stake and that they actually work to make sure only the uninformed masses are kept anxious, specially the wimpy intellectual kind, for their own selfish agendas while diving into the bottomless wealth amassed off the frightful potentials scenarios envisioned. How about someone (living in Prof. Noam Chomsky's neighborhood & close to him like family or a friend) arrange to give him a comfortable hair cut, a trim of his beard (every two weeks) -- with his full permission (for the remainder of his life). Perhaps include a gentle massage for his neck, shoulders, arms and legs. On the day of his haircut etc, also give him a good warm shampooing, bath; if he prefers a warm water soak in his tub, give him. He is one of the few greatest souls that I have come to know (unfortunately not personally) in my life. He cares for mankind and his students should volunteer personally to attend to him. We (in India) call that as Guru-bhakti, which does immense good to the student in particular and the Universe in general! I hope he is surrounded by caring people who would make him comfortable AND CHEERFUL all through his remaining years on this Mother Earth!
