Looks great. See you practice a lot of tacking. You are soon ready for the silverrudder! Could film your wake, when you are reaching a bit, and its easier to understand the performance. Looks very nice btw.

@SamuelLanghorn Dji Mini3 I would recommend. I use my Mini2 whenI fly from my boat. If I drop it not the end of the world. The newest Mini4 or Air3 is not worth the extra money. All mini is sub 250g and you are good to go!

Thanks for your encouraging comments. There are only a few sharing this experience 🙂 my poor rudder has been exposed to a lot of stress, this is only the latest challenge. Previously I had issues with the downhaul. I was surprised how much more force only a few degrees make.

Wow, awesome idea! I have to do this, but my old one is still installed. How do you remove the old one?
@SamuelLanghorn3 ай бұрын
you have to press and turn. I assume when you remove it you don't care if sth breaks, the plastic "pipe" is held by three prongs that get released when you turn it by around 20 deg.
@Nissan300zxshowcar3 ай бұрын
@@SamuelLanghornthank you! The replacement part wasnt available near me, so seeing it in your video was key. Didnt realize all it was is a three prong plastic attachment. Again, great video, helped a lot!!

Looks great in the light wind!
@SamuelLanghorn3 ай бұрын
the wind started much later than usual in the day.... at 5pm it was going up to 20+ knots. I made some mistake with the rudder downhaul line. it had slipped through the clamp as I am using a 3mm dynema/polyester covered line... as a result the rudder was angled at around 10deg, putting a lot of pressure on the rudder.... anyways still some learning here.

Beautiful! Where do you get trampolines like that? Why was tacking difficult? Do you have a leeboard?
@SamuelLanghorn11 ай бұрын
Looks like you are in the US. I got the trampoline material from Sailrite and sewed some reinforcement around the perimeter. For my new trimaran I am using dyneema netting. Tacking: yes, it has a leeboard, I guess the main issue is the inefficient sail that does not let you go close enough to the wind. As the unpowered path takes so long you loose all the momentum and get stuck in the waves before you turn to the other side. I had added a jib later which helped quite a bit.

Try first using liquid dishwashing soap. If that doesn't work, try using a kitchen vacuum sealer & place sealed bag in the freezer. Then try to quickly install. Be careful if using any kind of lubricant or oil as it may break down the seal.

Awesome! How did you make the cassette rudder? Was it in the plans?
@SamuelLanghorn Жыл бұрын
the cassette rudder was not officially in the plans, but Gary Dierking had some reference in another design. It actually took me some "learning" to get it properly done, i.e. the rudder box broke twice. The forces are substantial, I had to wrap a sufficient amount of carbon (glass should work too) around the critical corners.... eventually it worked quite well.

Thank You! I was ready to call a plumber because I could not get the new one installed or just replace the toilet because this Kohler has been nothing but trouble. Any videos on your iako and ama build. It's beautiful. I have a fiberglass sailing canoe but need to redo iakos and widen her like yours.
@SamuelLanghorn2 жыл бұрын
Hi PA, I ripped Western red cedar strips (around 1/8" thick), made a sandwich 3 cedar strips and 2 layers of uni directional carbon, it easily bends into the shape you want to have. Once I had defined the top portion of the shape, i.e. glued together, I added the bottom portion using some spacers (just some blocks of wood). The final step is to seal front and back with 1/4" plywood, I did not even add an external layer of fiberglass. It is a solid construction. I got the dimensions from Gary Dierking's Va'a desing. Enjoy your build. Sam

@SamuelLanghorn2 жыл бұрын
Iakos: top and bottom are cedar strip alternating with uni carbon (300g/m2 I guess), the cedar strips were around 2-3 mm so I can bend them over stations to get the shape. Occasionally there is a small wooden block to maintain the proper spacing. In the end I covered front and back with 6mm marine plywood. It definitely felt rock solid 🙂sorry no video about the iako building process.

I just replaced a Koehler flush valve that was vertical, rather than right-angled. Lubricating the surfaces between the valve and the gasket with olive oil, mentioned elsewhere on KZbin, worked well, without needing too much pressure, and was simpler than squeezing and freezing.
