He was a Corporal in the Color Guard as his regiment paraded down the Champs d'Elysee in June, 1917. He was a 21-year-old Regular Army Platoon Sergeant on 11 November 1918. He retired as a Colonel in 1946, with a "tombstone promotion" to Brigadier General. Churchill pinned on his OBE in 1945. I had it played at the funerals of both of those brothers, one lived to 90, the other 94. The eldest was born in 1920-- 36 years older than me. And I've already arranged for it to be played by The US Army Band when I'm buried in Arlington National Cemetery... I did 32 years in the Army myself.
