My dream would be to visit Zinnyata and her owners...I see his love for her and have no doubt how you treat an animal transfers into the animal....love....love ...love...God knew what he was doing when Zinnyata came into our world....Merry Christmas

It's so crazy how insanely huge both horses were. Ruffian and Barbaro are both my favorite race horses of all time. They were both so talented and so beautiful!

I remember watching Barbaro break down live..I was sitting with my parents in our living room, as we did every year when the great “Triple Crown” races aired…I screamed and stared crying…my mom held me, my dad was trying to build me up by telling me that everything would be ok, that they pulled him up early enough, etc etc. vivid memory. Years later I learned all about Ruffian and fell in love with her.

Would've been great to have seen her 4 months later at Meydan for the very 1st running of the Dubai World Cup on an at that time brand new tapeta main track in March 2010. I think she might've been a tough row to hoe for Gloria De Campeao, Lizard's Desire, Allybar, & Gio Ponti who made up the top 4 in that order.

Barbaro is still my favorite racehorse ever. The best? He didn't get to prove it, and no horse can touch Man O War, Secretariat, and Ruffian. He was considered by many, at the time, to be the second coming. Whether that is true or not we'll never know, but he certainly possessed the possibility.

Ruffian taught us some very hard lessons about racing and treating race injuries. Her breakdown was the reason Barbaro even had the chance that he did. And she was the last racehorse in America who would lose her life because of a match race. Match racing had already been criticized for its tendency to hyperfocus equine athletes who, if it weren't for their diligent jockeys, would happily run themselves to death. Ruffian was one of those who would've killed herself on the racetrack if given the chance. She didn't like being pulled up even after breaking her leg. She didn't understand what she'd done wrong that she wasn't being allowed to beat that colt. Match races are intended to showcase horses with just her type of fiery spirit, and match races are deadliest to horses with just that type of spirit. They couldn't be allowed to continue. Not after Ruffian.

I've always said Ruffian was a disaster waiting to happen. Both her sire and dam were notoriously unsound. I have loved racing for several decades now, but having that longtime outlook, I have major criticisms of it. Racing itself is not inherently cruel. These horses LOVE their jobs and often get depressed without one, much like a border collie. But my BIGGEST criticism of this sport is the breeding industry breeding unsound for the sake of speed, and Ruffian was one of its major casualties. She was indeed a freak of nature, a wonder to behold, but she should never have been been conceived in the first place.
@sunnyseacat68576 ай бұрын
Well expressed thougths. Ruffian wanted to be born, she had to be; every animal that is born wants to be born no matter the conditions or cirumstances. Ruffian's death sent a message to the entire world about horse-racing; perhaps that was her greatest gift and ultimately her legacy. I am completely new to horse-racing. I disagree with the horse racing industry and racing like that, in general. Horses are animals with feelings, personalities, families (taken from them), and friends. I am learning about horses via Horse Plus (in Tennessee) and Clever Cowgirl, two KZbin channels that shed light on horses and rehabilitation. Horse Pluse rescues many horses from the "slaughter pipeline" in which various race horses have been sent. It is horrendous what is done to these horses, shipped out of the USA to Canada and Mexico for horsemeat consumption. Many horses are neglected in the UK, too, as World Horse Welfare shows in their videos. So what is the point? Horses are magnificent creatures who could well enough be left alone, pretty much, to enjoy life. Hats off to Old Friends who takes in retired race horses. The owner said that the horses are allowed to be themselves and that their personalities really come through there. oldfriendsequine.org/

Something does need to be done about the population of wild horses. They eat the land down to nothing. Unless more people decided to rescue and train the ones they round up (a dangerous act on its own. Training a wild horse never touched by humans before can result in serious injury, but we have a friend who has actually succeeded in doing so. Only she could ride the horse though.) then some need to be killed off. I hate saying it, as we have 3 mares right now and we love them to death. We can't imagine letting them be sent away. Some can't be used by people. The only other option I can see is if someone put all their money into owning thousands of acres specifically for these horses to live on. Where they do not overgraze and kill the land, as they are right now. If you've got the skills and money to take one in and train it, then go right ahead, but they can't just be left to roam. They do more harm than good to the land. (Unlike wolves. When wolves were almost killed out. Their prey flourished and overgrazed, killing the land. When wolves were returned to their natural habitat, everything eventually got back into its natural balance. This is because wolves are supposed to be there. That is their place.) Horses are not native here in the U.S. and many were Spanish horses that were either set loose or got loose. If nature intended for horses to be a natural being in this setting, they wouldn't be starving while killing the ground. (Horses will get so hungry in the wild that they will eat brambles. Causing a nest like structure in their stomach, and therefor making them colic and die.) They aren't like in the movies. They aren't usually running over green pastures and fat and healthy. Many starve while alone in the wild, untouched by people. It's either slaughter to reduce their numbers, or people need to start taking in more of them instead of asking others to do it. Not everyone can support a horse. It's a lot of time and money put in to working with them. Sometimes there is no other option. Sad but true. Realistically they cannot be left to just roam. Their large numbers do more damage to them in the long run if left alone.

if we start a small wolf pack in sync with wild horses and let nature control the wild horse population. it would benefit both the horses and wolf packs.
