Not bad. Between this, Diamond Mine 2 and Lemming Syndrome, you're well on the way to finding a classic compilation for Christmas! The pain of the rest will be well worth it 😅

Very nice concept. I was curious enough to give it a go. Unfortunately the levels quite often generate with unwinnable scenarios (e.g bins at the bottom which, due to the pipe placement, are inaccessible). I think with a bit smarter procedural generation of levels this could be a really nice game.

Interesting. I always saw games like this back in the day but (I guess understandably as a child) didn't try them. Regarding the comparison to the trading in Elite, I wonder if there are other games like this that also simulate the 'travel' aspect of Elite? I.e. picking a location to buy goods cheaply, then selling them someone else more expensive, but also weighing in the risk of the journey? Fun video as always - thanks for posting!
@ColinHoad10 сағат бұрын
Thank you, Andrew! I do like the idea of combining the 'travel' aspect of Elite into a trading game. I can't say with any certainty whether such a game was written, back in the day, but it's a a better concept than the slightly random "political events" in Commodities.

Whisper it quietly, Steve, but so do I 😁 And your eyes weren't deceiving you, the maths was definitely buggy, it kept telling me I had more cash on hand than I really did, probably an integer overflow buried in the code 😆

I think I have seen worse games. Perhaps it should be called "The Great Bug Detective Part IV". These sorts of games don't seem all too enticing, but when I saw things like that they made me think, I can write that too. I didn't. Like graphics. Enjoyed seeing you play randomly.

There is something approachable, coding wise, about games like this. I'm also a sucker for a Mode 7 game, and if you imagine hard enough, you could believe it was a real trading application from the early 80s 😆

Colin, I'm hoping you can help me here. What was the name of the game on the BBC/Electron where you managed your rice fields but they could be destroyed by the river bursting and washing it all away. In my mind I seem to think the rice fields were represented by arrows on the right hand side of the screen. The last time I saw that game was in primary school (AKA a lifetime ago).

@@ColinHoad I found myself thinking about ways that it would be a little more intuitive. Would it be easier if numbers were displayed, so you'd know that the one you chose would be increased by 3, the adjoining ones by 2 and the next by 1, and when one reaches 5 you win it. Or maybe on another computer that could display hues with increasing intensity.

Death Valley from one of the Usbourne books is a better implementation of this and a simpler implementation, too, where the walls and player are plotted at the bottom of the screen, and then the scrolling takes care of everything else: it doesn't even unplot the player, leaving a trail. Since the walls only move one character across at any time, you don't need to see the path ahead, but just keep far enough away from the walls.

@craigcharlesworth15383 күн бұрын
The main issue was having to do your own scoring. Surely the whole appeal of a video game version is that it does that, otherwise why would you spend 10 minutes loading this rather than just cracking out the dice?
@ftstrange60842 күн бұрын
the screen layout is utter dross. So much free space but they opted to squeeze all the scores onto one line and (badly) abbreviate them! And they couldn't even centre the game title properly 🤮

@ColinHoad4 күн бұрын
Yeah, the more I think about it the more I suspect it's essentially a slightly more complicated version of noughts and crosses, there's likely a stratagem that guarantees success or stalemate...
