I always loved this short film since I had seen it when I was a child, I believe I was 13. but I remember being very confused by the plot. Every now and then I’ve come to watch it again, I feel as though something always calls me back to it once I remember it’s existence. And now watching it again in my twenties,I feel very touched by it. People are scared of what they don’t understand. Durian had to often mask his true emotions to fit in the norm, or people wouldn’t want to be around him. He constantly trained himself to appear “normal” , but when it was finally done he was just like everyone else, and there was no longer anything interesting about him, in fact there was no story at all. I interpret the photographer as his older self, he trained so hard to fit in, but it didn’t make him happy, he lost himself through the mask he put on, and no longer recognizes himself. At the end of the film, you can see as his younger self says “did you miss me?” he picks up a Polaroid of him wearing the exact mask the photographer had, which I never noticed, and when lifted up, he now sees his younger self in the mirror. I think this is a film about finding yourself. I was very touched by this film. I think what had helped me make more sense of it was falling inlove with an autistic woman. I didn’t always understand the way she expressed her emotions at first, but in the end it’s what made me fall inlove with her. She stands out from the crowd for positive reasons, but will sometimes put on a mask to fit in. I think I understand her a little bit better now. Such a genius film, I don’t think I’ve ever quite understood it until now.

I think it's a lot better if you just end it at 11:13, before the dog suddenly can MacGyver a short range spacecraft from a vending machine, use tools, etc. A man, doomed by human problems, saves the dog as his last act. Not a dog, without a dog's limitations, being the deus ex machina.

I love this artstyle it's super original and so beautiful! Super cute story too, I love that the dad makes custom cubes for the kid to play with in the forest! And the deer! 💚
