Does this map just count total submitted ticks since it started, or does it update every month/year with only the one's found or diseases found in them so as to know the "current" threat... My country seems to have them all summer according the website, and while this might be true... I never seemed to get any when running around the forests and parks as a kid, though I have seen a few. Right now my country Lee lists 70 ticks tested, and 8 cases of lyme. Is this info just for 2024 alone?

how is this an international dark sky park when it's down the street from a major light-polluted city?

This park was amazing at night. The photos I got at night and to finally see the milky way and my first comet was amazing. One of the best nights of my life.

A dark bucket half filled with water and a squirt of liquid dishwashing soap can attract and drown mosquito. The soap breaks the water tension and when they land to lay eggs they drown. Black and blue buckets work well but red is their favorite color. Place it in a dark space like behind a bush up against the house.

Proscribed controlled Burns every five years helps to kill ticks and releases phosphorus and other minerals into the soil. Installing Owl nest boxes will reduce small warm blooded tick hosts. Bat roosting boxes near water breeding grounds for mosquitoes help reduce their numbers. Shagbark Hickory trees provide Summer roosts for the Indiana Bat (mosquitos eater) and nesting for the Brown Creeper (tick and tree borer eater).

Good work! Keep it up. Had no idea bats actually help farmers with pest control (10:37). I'll now be on the lookout for bats on our farm!

The green head suggests that it is not an Eastern, it is a Terapene Ornata Luteola (Desert Box Turtle).

Nice catch! We received him from another nature center several years ago and took their word for it, but it turns out, you are right! A local herpetologist agrees that he could likely be a desert box turtle.

That's a beautiful specimen you have there on display. There are only two on the Western box turtle: the Deserts and the Ornates

@@reefer013008 Thank you; we are partial to our little guy. We sent more pictures to our local herpetologist, and after seeing the plastron, feels this is the ornate subspecies. Reading up on Western box turtles, our guy's personality definitely fits! Thank you again for pointing this out!

Nice video, planning on going there this weekend ( weather permitting ). Is there firewood available there or are we allowed to bring our own? I know there are lots of places that won't let you bring your own firewood. Thanks

Great clear pond for paddlers. Only negative thing is that there is active mining equipment in the background and on the way in. Wish wadding and swimming were legal there as well.
