I get the importance of Produce safety. Yet I can see why you get pushback, people of a 3 letter Agencies telling independent farmers that, they tell you if you can operate or not. Sounds like a Nobel cause but there are trade offs. Such as discouraging more people to grow them, or creating another government entity that decides who gets to run the market. All can cause greens to be sold less. Impacting the health of the community greater. Educate is perfect, teaming up with the FDA to force it is crazy. Hold people personally responsible if something goes wrong to discourage those without clean practice.
@IttyBittyMicroFarmКүн бұрын
It can definitely be frustrating when government gets involved. We work closely with our local Dept of Ag to ensure we're growing (and teaching) the safest ways to grow. We hope that with enough responsible, good growers, microgreens will to continue do be considered "one cut produce" under USDA and not highly regulated high-risk foods with permitting & rules controlled by the FDA.

love to see a follow up of this thing in action. Gotta be a game changer with no having to sort out and premeasure seed, just weigh before and after, no shake shake sprinkle sprinkle, so systemized it looks nearly fool proof. So is it working? Love to see how fast ot plows through some lined up trays. Not cheap, but even financed it's gotta pay for itself pretty fast.

if you get 6 0zs from a tray how much do you charge the customer please
@IttyBittyMicroFarm17 күн бұрын
Great question! For beets, which are a specialty microgreen, pricing is typically higher. We charge around $6-$8 per ounce, so for 6 ounces, that would be $36-$48. Pricing can vary depending on your market and costs, so always ensure you're factoring in your expenses and desired profit margin. We also have a free sheet that helps you price your microgreens effectively-would you like to learn how to get it?

I heard that the prices of seeds gone up by a lot so it makes profit margins very small. Is that true?
@IttyBittyMicroFarm21 күн бұрын
Seed prices can fluctuate. They're certainly higher now than they were when we started, but I'm pretty sure thats most things these days. 😅 We evaluate our costs and pricing regularly to ensure we are able to continue to operate a profitable business.

Do you have experience with or an opinion on ocean mineral water additives? Thanks in advance
@IttyBittyMicroFarm26 күн бұрын
We tried them in the past as a small scale experiment, but I found that it's a pain to mix then water then dip from a bucket, especially as you grow. Fertilizers like Ocean Solution are typically used when growing hydroponically or in straight coco coir as those options provide zero nutrients to the plants. We try to keep our process as simple as possible & use a high quality grow medium that has nutrients & doesn't need supplementation.
@joshoooway27 күн бұрын
Thanks for the content! This is very helpful! Many growers recommend a blackout after germination to get height growth. Do you all feel this is not necessary?
@IttyBittyMicroFarm26 күн бұрын
While blackout can be beneficial for some crops or growing conditions, we find that blackout is not necessary as our goal is to have quality greens that aren't too long/lanky/stemmy. Depriving the plants of light may make yields higher, but that yield is usually just more stem & smaller, less vibrant cotelydons.

Great video! Thanks for the content! Are there any other microgreens you find grow best in deep trays?

Beet & Chard grow similarly, So they also grow in deep trays. We also grow our Nasturtiums in deep trays- they prefer a deeper foot system.

Great, quick video! Will this batch regrow or do you have to start again after harvest?
@IttyBittyMicroFarmАй бұрын
Technically, these could regrow... however, your most nutrition is going to be in that first cut. All secondary cuts would need fertilizer in the soil for nutrients.

So no watering while in germination? Great video btw.

How long between last watering of tray and harvest?
@IttyBittyMicroFarmАй бұрын
We typically aim for at least 24 hours between, but that can vary based on your soil/medium & environmental factors.

What is the best way to determine if your area will support a micro greens business?
@IttyBittyMicroFarmАй бұрын
Market research is important, but #1- All People (and some pets!) are potential customers. Sometimes, it is an opportunity that will take a lot more product education than in other areas.

My lentil and peas microgreens turn brown at the ends instead of green when I put them on the light. I am doing everything step by step. They sprouted fine and formed a good root system. After that, I open them to the natural light and start putting water on the bottom. Instead of turning green, they look almost burned. I wasted 3 trays of microgreens already. I am not sure why? Do you have any suggestions? Thank you!
@IttyBittyMicroFarmАй бұрын
That could be a variety of things... What soil/medium are you using? Cocopeat can be too salty & cause them to die off. How much light are they getting? Too much light can actually 'burn' small plants. And Seed Quality- Are you getting them from a reputable source? Feel free to join our FREE Community on Skool- www.skool.com/MicrogreensForProfit We have a lot of really awesome & helpful growers there too! :)
@bvangumАй бұрын
So you don't spray them during germination?
@IttyBittyMicroFarmАй бұрын
No, We leave them alone during germination. Water before, Stack, Then wait. Opening them and exposing them to the environment then closing them back up can actually introduce pathogens/mold spores from the air that are then allowed to stay in that warm moist environment- A potential recipe for crop failure.
