In my mind, there have only been 3 sopranos who were successfully able to master Lucia di Lammermoor: Maria Callas, Joan Sutherland, and of course Beverly Sills!! BRAVA to all 3 perfect Lucias!

I don't think so, Caballe at Carnegie Hall was beyond any other soprano

@@lynntownsend4457 I didn’t hear Caballe at Carnegie Hall, only on her first commercial recording for RCA. She is, unfortunately, quite boring. No low notes in her last aria. Sills had a very good technique. Her voice was smaller but she used it mercilessly ! Sills and Callas had teachers that were specialists in the 19th century Bel Canto. Gencer also studied for a while with Elvira de Hidalgo - Callas’s teacher - in Istanbul , but she was neglected by records companies

@@mickyalexandru6894 Carnegie Hall was Caballe American Debut ....the audience cheered for atleast 1/2 hr. She signed with Met and RCA backstage...she had a great lower range and she was the last great belle canto....her Norma in France is beyond compare and Callas considered her the best
@mickyalexandru6894
@mickyalexandru6894 Жыл бұрын
@@lynntownsend4457 It seems that she did not use her lower range always. In Lucrezia she doesn’t. In other recordings, she does. The same can be said about Norma - in the French live recording she is much better than the commercial RCA one.

A isto some Os 4 pilares: simplicidade, humildade, alegria, E Transparência. To me it is the best interpretation I’ve heard especially on the emotional level. She was 63 when she recorded this piece and we should take this into consideration.

I saw one of the Lucrezia performances in this series at the New York City opera. I dearly love Beverly, but this just wasn’t her role. She was still able to conjure up some fantastic performances after this date in Manon, Thais, and I think even Traviata and Devereux. But the voice and, more importantly, the empathy with the character, just wasn’t there for Lucrezia. (I just referred back to my computer list of opera performances, and I saw Beverly sing a spectacular Lucia at the Met on New Year’s Eve 1976. I mean, the audience sat stunned after the mad scene. Perhaps she had given a lot more thought to Lucia, but my point is that she still had some incredible nights after this Lucrezia series.)

Aindrias Hirt, singers today are concentrated on “sound” and “volume”. They do not realize how to speak, simply speak words, and they do not know that tone must be spontaneous, not manufactured, nor do they know that tone should never be mixed with the word.
